Hi Sparty!

Actually, he grew up in a football household and has been around coaching and head coaches his whole life.

Moreover, age does not equal ability. There have been plenty of sons that have taken over their father's business and have done better and plenty of coaching sons that surpassed their dad (e.g. Harbaugh's').

Kid is a TE coach, so let's see how he does.

nothing is a given. There are plenty of really smart dads who raise dumb sons and dumb dads that raise really smart sons (to keep the analogy simple).

However, if James is interested in coaching he has the opportunity (that 99.9% of other kids interested in coaching) don't have, which is many family members in the profession. Assuming James puts in the time and work to learn coaching, he should be more advanced than anybody else, simply because he has access to his family.

As for girls of coaches, my guess is that the profession clearly has little to no female coaches, so it doesn't matter if you are a daughter or a random femail football coaching genius. Unfortunately, you are screwed.

If his last name was not Harbaugh, everyone would say welcome and this seems like a reasonable move.  Again, going from being an offensive QC coach in the NFL for three years to a position coach for TEs in college is not an unreasonable leap.  I am betting it is a good hire.

This is the same place that had plenty of posters expressing doubt at Jedd Fisch getting hired as WR coach and he was an NFL OC last year. MGoBlog is going to constantly complain about position coaches.

Harbaugh is almost definitely going to be the youngest and least experienced assistant coach at a Power Five school next year, and probably by a good margin. Jim Harbaugh has earned the benefit of the doubt on hires, but just based on resume Jay Harbaugh is by far the biggest reach on his staff.

JH will be more demanding of him than all his other coaches. He'll probably have some of the same duties he had with Baltimore along with his TE duties. . JH, Drevno, and the receivers coach will all have input with regards to the Tight Ends. The dude is young. He'll have the hunger and energy to grind away.

I almost NEVER neg, honestly, I really don't and I feel bad when I do unless it's obvious trolling, but you make it sound like this hire is going to bring down the entire coaching staff, which I think is a bit much to assume at this point.  I get not being on board wth the hire but taking it that far seems a bit much to me.   The previous poster was just pointing out this kid won't be operating entirely alone, he wasn't saying the other coaches will have to do his job for him.

I know what he was saying. my response was not to imply he will take down entire staff and staff will do all his work. What I was trying to say conventional wisdom by more knowledge posters was that Jim would hire a TE coach who could also work with OL to assist with Drevno. So to hire a coach who need to help of all the other coaches is odd to me. That's all.

That's every situation in every job ever. Part of the senior role in an organization is ensuring the juniors are on the right path. It makes the team better.

It's a bit inverse but I can guarantee DJ Durkin is the most stoked person that Mattison stayed on. Mattison will be "taxed" as you say to help Durkin continue to learn how to be a coordinator

Drevno would need to offer the same kind of advice no matter who the TE coach is. And you can bet that he's on board with this higher.

This is an NFL staff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but every single position coach has experience in the NFL, as a coach or in this case as an assistant. Have to guess this will help in recruiting, no?

Anyone who doesn't think this is nepotism is crazy, has their head so far up harbaughs ass they can see his mouth, is an idoit or all of the above. Every single guy on this staff has years of experience at what they do and have done it well. Jay has literally none as either a player or coach. If his name wasn't harbaugh he wouldn't have been hired, that makes it nepotism and everyone knows it.

Okay, it's nepotism.  So what?  And does anyone really think Harbaugh (the man, the machine, the myth, the legend) is going to jeopardize his season by hiring his son?   None of us know what his plans are.  For all we know, this is a one year thing and Harbaugh will hire a new TE coach next year.  Everyone just needs to relax about this.

This hire could be part of a budget issue.  He has a lot of big $ guys already on board.  It also is his last hire and maybe had only entry level money available.  I am sure he (JH) knows what he is doing.  I do feel bad for Manning though.

What is very interesting about the response to this hire is throughout the coaching search for a HC. the board was adamant about getting the best coach regardless of Michigan ties (and we ended up with the best who happened to have Michigan ties). Now everyone loves this hire only because he's Jim's son and how dare we question him (yes I know his coaching tree is pretty impressive). If he was the best option, great.

great. I have never been on that site and only heard about it from this blog. What funny is this wouldn't even be debated as much if he wasn't Jim's son so that tells you something. the other position coaching threads are not this long or hotly debated. If you look at my post all I have said was he hasn't been a coach so we don't know. His role in past has been primarily scouting type stuff. If he was being hired as an analyst where they break down film and stuff like that then this would be a slam dunk hire. We dont know if he can teach the position. Its the same criticism people had of Manning as a CB coach and he at least played the game and on defense. Having knowledge doesn't always translate to being able to teach it

What the hell is everyone complaining about? I honestly love this decision. Jim will not allow his son to fail and will pick up the necessary slack if needed. This staff has enough experience already it to help develop Jay and this is exciting to see. Jim won't allow this decision to fail. Also, maybe jay is a bad ass at at quality control and is being brought in more for his strength in that area as he develops into a position coach.

The relevant fact is that it's not uncommon for filial bonds to outweigh solid judgement of actual performance. However, the Mercury News article doesn't paint any kind of picture of a spoiled, entitled son—quite the opposite.

It's nepotism, but at a position where he's liable to get plenty of coaching assistance. Time will tell whether the choice pans out or not.

I'll trust Coach Harbaugh's choice of the 25 year old that learned to watch film and coach with a championship organization in the NFL over the recruiter that didn't get the development needed out of his position group to hold Gary Nova under 400 yards passing this fall.

Fact is, we have no idea how it will work out.  While it looks like some sentimental nepotism, the rest of the staff has such an impressive pedigree that Coach has earned the benefit of the doubt, especially for a hire at the bottom of the totem pole.

maybe the money pool for assistants was drying up. Read the Mercury News article and feel like, while it is probably a little of both my original supsicions, this looks to be a really good hire. With that coaching family's bloodlines, the fact that this kid has to have the same persona his dad has based on some of the inferences in the article, and that he will have several experienced TE coaches around him, this hire looks really good to me.

trueblueintexas

If this had been Jim's first hire of the staff, I would scream nepotism. This was the final hire after we know he was going after other TE coaches. We have no idea how far down the list of TE coach options Jim had to go to reach hiring Jay. We know it wasn't the first choice. That is how hiring works. You do not always get your first pick, but you still have to hire someone. Once you get past your first couple of picks, you start to look more at personality and potential than experience. From what others have said in this thread, Jay has plenty of strong personality traits and potential.

Jim got his coaching start recruiting for his dad at WKU. If nepotism was inherently bad then we wouldn't have an elite coach right now.

Who coaches the Ravens? Have they been any good since they're coached by a product of nepotism?

Fair or unfair, this is how the world works.

Don't most sons want to match or outdo their dad's?  If so for this kid, we're lucky to have him.  Imagine trying to prove yourself to your dad when your dad is HARBAUGH.  He will be motivated and have Harbaughian energy and the talent to prove himself.  Chip off the old block could be a very positive development.

than our last TE coach! I think everyone will be surprised at how good of a coach he will turn out to be! Who knows, may be Jay will be Jim's successor in 20 years?

Dude, I'm good with the decision.  I supported Lloyd Carr till the end, I supported RR and gave him benefit of the doubt, I supported Hoke . . . My point is, I am not going to question a coach with this kind of pedigree as a lay person given the aforementioned..  JH and MIchigan will be just fine.

In fact, I am going to quit drinking and go to bed after I brush, floss and take care of any blackheads on my nose.  Probably only reason I shared that is becasue I have been drinking.  Atleast the Wings won.  Go Blue.

The complaining that is going in about this is absurd. I don't ever post but this is ridiculous. You guys are questioning Jim Harbaugh about a football related decision. Give me a break. He is going to bust his ass in order to receive his dad's approval of the job he has done and as he is slowly promoted with age, I'll quietly laugh when he will be a great coach, just like the guy that created him
