Webb says people are reading too much into Harbaugh/Wheatley photo

Submitted by AnthonyThomas on

Wheatley told Sam that a deal is "far from done" and that there has been no formal interview. Of course, the fact that he and Harbaugh are old friends will help us, but the post with the photo says the two were finalizing Wheatley's contract, which isn't true.

Guess I don't mind a little speculation. However, seems like lately everything is speculation. Why can't we have some patience and let things play out then announce the facts with analysis?

I will say that a great deal of threads, even in season and when we have a relatively stable coaching situation, are predictive / speculative in nature, and as someone who was around during the search that brought us Hoke, speculation is what passed the time because almost by nature very little fact seems to come out of camps until it is moments from happening, or so it seems.

The "Caveat lector" sign looms large over the MGoBoard by definition essentially - that's all I am trying to say. We do try to keep the unfounded stuff off the boards as much as possible though.

Cool story bro moment (entirely unrelated to the thread): I got the chance to meet John Pinette (above) after seeing him do a gig in Cleveland years ago, and he was a super nice guy. He was one of my longtime favorite standup comedians, and his bits are definitely worth a google for people who like good natured food/fat jokes.

I have to disagree with Sam. One man does not sit across the table from another at Red Robbin - home of so many great burgers - without a signed contract I act as RB coach. Come on, Sam.

I just love that they went to Red Robin.

I have 1 "Bo story" and it involves Red Robin.

About a year or two before his death I was over on the east side of Ann Arbor, I think going to Home Depot, and ended up at the Red Robin over there for lunch. I'm sitting there with my friend who came along and the restaurant was basically empty. All of a sudden in walks Bo, which was somewhat shocking - Bo eating at Red Robin? Even more shocking was that in the entire empty place they sat him in the booth next to ours so me and Bo were facing each other over the seat my friend was sitting in.

So here I am eating my endless fries at Red Robin trying not to stare directly into Bo's entirely intimidating gaze. There he sat, alone, eating his hamburger -- which he apparently got a lot because the waiter asked if he wanted "the usual". No one bothered him, no one said anything really about it.

When he was done he got up, a little kid asked for a picture, to which he obliged, and off he went. But this Harbaugh story makes me chuckle because I like to think that Bo took him there regularly and Harbaugh is just continuing the tradition.

Wheatley is waiting on what happens with Marrone and his staff. If he can get a promotion, he'll stay in the NFL, but if not, then he'll come to Michigan.

They also had to talk about Wheatley's kid and if/ how Harbaugh wanted to use him.

What jersey number will sell the best this upcoming season? I know #4 jerseys are already sold out at mden.com. If Wheatley comes I wonder how his jersey sales will rank vs Harbaugh and vs actual players? In recent years I’ve seen many16 and 98 jerseys but what current players number will be desirable moving forward?

Sam just said two minutes ago that TW got into town too late yesterday to have the formal interview with JH, so they just went to dinner. Sam says the interview will be today, and he says he's optimistic, and that we could hear something today.

Sam also just mentioned something about TW's ability to recognize RB talent. He was RB coach at EMU in 2009, and there was a lightly-regarded 2-star out of Ohio that Wheatley thought was going to be a complete stud at the next level. This RB only had offers from EMU, Bowling Green, and Marshall, so EMU had a decent shot at landing this guy. At the last minute MSU swooped in and offered this nobody a scholarship, and naturally he chose MSU over the MAC-level offers.

Leveon Bell is now one of the best RBs in the NFL.

Confirmed:

Wheatley is actually interviewing Harbaugh to gauge Harbaugh's interest in another NFL coaching position. A few NFL positions still in play. No surprise, Harbaugh's heart is in the NFL.

Not sure what Sam's reasoning is,but I've got to imagine that Jim wouldn't be happy to take that photo if things were genuinely up in the air - it could send the wrong message to other candidates for the position.
