Henson: Durkin DC, Roman OC
http://gregghenson.com/michigans-new-oc-and-dc/
This is potentially good for Communist Football, as Roman and Harbaugh went to visit Chip Kelly at Oregon to learn how to adapt the read option to the 49ers, as Brian noted in his Profiles in Heroism post:
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/2014/09/24/eagles-chip-kelly-praises…
Roman has also been down to visit Nevada, where Colin Kaepernick went to school:

He was pretty up front about how little he knew about that one, he was simply passing along a possibility that he had heard.

I hope he's right. And, lest he feel slighted, I'll note that Henson appears to be a reliable source in the JH story, though a paper cut might send him to the ER.

Love the Durkin hire... especially for recruiting! Dont' know much anout Roman.
December 29th, 2014 at 3:10 PM ^
Durkin is great. I'm not sold on Roman. 49ers fans hated him above all this year.

More appropriate though for here...Go Blue!

so he can't be that bad.

I would be extremely happy about Durkin, he has been a great DC. Also, I feel that Roman has done a really good job with Harbaugh. A question for people that know more about the 49ers this year and in the past few years with roman as a OC: I know the 49er fans have been calling for Roman's head, however, is it warranted or is it more of a product of the fact that they have to call for someones head due to the recent record which hasn't been as good as the past 3 years?
December 29th, 2014 at 3:24 PM ^
Durkin has been DC for just one year - in response to your comment: "he has been a great DC"
December 29th, 2014 at 3:36 PM ^
He has been the DC at florida for 2 years and I like what he has done there as a DC. There aren't too many people that would realistically be available that I would want over him. He also was recruiter of the year a few years back. I really like what he would bring to the coaching staff overall.
December 29th, 2014 at 3:50 PM ^
He's a strong recruiter, yeah, but those defenses were Muschamp's.
December 29th, 2014 at 4:06 PM ^
So was he is charge of a position group or something?
December 29th, 2014 at 4:15 PM ^
He was the LBs coach, but what I mean is Muschamp was the type of coach that was still essentially a coordinator as well. It's like giving Mullen's OC credit for his offense, or Patterson's DC credit for his defense. Muschamp made that defense.
December 30th, 2014 at 12:22 AM ^
Oh don't get me wrong, Muschamp was the significant factor in molding that defense, but I'm sure Durkin was also quite helpful. Is there anyone that we could realistically get that you would rather have? Vic Fangio would have been really nice, but I just assumed he wanted to stay in the pro's and maybe try to move up to a HC position.

Sam Webb rumored the same names yesterday afternoon as "strong possibilities."

in his resume. UM needs plenty of help in that regard.
December 29th, 2014 at 3:34 PM ^
Wow, with Durkin at 36 years in age these are some young coordinators.
December 29th, 2014 at 3:14 PM ^
Durkin I'm excited for. Roman, not so much given the offensive disaster that the Niners were this year...
December 29th, 2014 at 3:30 PM ^
I know the Jaguars wanted to give him the head job that eventually went to Gus Bradley. I don't think it is always sound logic to write a coach/OC/DC after one bad year. Roman didn't just forget how to call plays well - its usually more complicated than that, and not always the fault of the coach.
Nuss was the most celebrated OC hire in Michigan history, it didn't work out here, probably for reasons beyond his control. That doesn't mean he isn't a good OC, either.
You have to look at the body of work over a career - Roman's is impressive.
December 29th, 2014 at 3:52 PM ^
I would have loved to have a beer with Nuss after the 1st week of practice and discuss what he thought off the record. He probably couldn't believe what he saw.

Was their offense really a disaster? They were bottom half of the NFL in points scored, but not too far away from being smack dab in the middle. They also had 4 games against Arizona and Seattle, two of the best defenses in the league, and another against KC. They only had two games where they were held to single digits (both against the Seahawks) and 5 games where they scored 26+. How many offensive injuries did they have?
They didn't have a dominant offense this year, I agree. But to say they were an offensive disaster is just ridiculous. Roman is at least a middle of the road NFL OC, which makes him one of the best fucking offensive coordinators in all of college football.

So a rumor I read is that a big part of the strife between Harbaugh and the 49ers FO was due to Harbaugh refusing to fire Roman. Is there any reason why he should've fired Roman? As someone who hasn't followed Roman's career too closely, aside from knowing he's shared Harbaugh's success since Stanford, is this a good hire?

December 29th, 2014 at 3:33 PM ^
When roman got his first job with carolina, he invited me and my dad to be guests of the Panthers for a Monday night game in Charlotte and we got to stay in the team hotel and have a team meal with them in the ballroom. I don't remember much, I was like 11... but my dad was super excited to be remembered like that and thanked by Greg ....

I think some OC and DC are known to be good recruiters. Greg Mattison is a great recruiter. Durkin won the 2012 Rivals recruiter of the year award.
Jim Herman who is now a head coach was a really good recruiter as an OC.
