Assuming Hackett makes it "happen", is he officially JMFH?

Submitted by iawolve on
I don't think it can be overstated the job Jim Hackett has done for Michigan. He stepped into a open campus revolt against the previous AD, had to stabilize the fan base, fire the football coach and make an arguably program saving coaching hire who happens to be one of the hottest names in the NFL all in the time frame of a few months. I mean to say that I don't think you could find too many takers for that job description and he is on the verge of closing this out like a champ. Assuming it does happen, he is JMFH to me. I am sure he will follow this with a bang up AD hire and deserves a big thanks from the fan base when he steps down.

you haven't been reading the conventional wisdom of the NFL types.  They consider this a minor miracle.  It's not just about money, especially when some NFL teams (if not most) could match the cash.  If this happens, it shows a high level of competence, discretion and professionalism considering the timing/logistical issues.  This is how you run a coaching search.  I also suspect we will ultimately find out that there was a reasonble plan B worked out.

You couldn't be more wrong. He has handeled the transition and firing of coach Hoke as good as humanely possible. He then navigated the NFL waters, doing something no AD has done and pulled a MUCH DESIRED NFL head coach in his prime, to the college ranks. All the while not pissing off the 49ers and essentially eliminating NFL competition. Dude is a mother fucking genius....Steelcase INC must be the JV to college AD varsity.

I'm not saying he hasn't done a good job, but anyone who has met coach knows he's not going to be sweet talked by an ad to take a job. This opportunity sells itself. I'd be surprised if the conversation was more than "coach, we need you. Come back to Michigan and put us back where were supposed to be. And we'll give you FIFTY million dollars for your time".

You would displace this AD interim or not, why? Other University coaching transitions and funding issues are on the horizon. There is no imperative to remove your best available executive soon. The question of immediate substitution begs the necessity of address at this juncture. Home run hitters should stay in the contest. Or do we need to check a demographic box with someone aside from a West Michigan Christian white male demonstrably proven to succeed?

JMJH is a sideshow mock issue. Thanks, but I'll stick with Hackett for now unless and until he chooses a different role or somebody clearly superior in execution comes along.

Yes he will. Whether Harbaugh is here for 2 years or 20.

He'll come to the podium and pronounce "Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Harbaugh."

He will then proceed to drop the mic, walk off stage, and let Harbaugh do his thing.

He's also had to do all the other AD things at the same time.

Some like dismiss CEO types as overpaid suits, but the good ones get to that level by being really good at managing complex situations well. In Hackett it looks like Michigan was blessed with a good CEO type at the right time.

Bo would wonder just what in the hell Dave has been trying to do the last four years while he'd be commending Hackett for doing everything he could to make Michigan successful.

edit: I had to go and read that chapter real quick, and turns out it mentions Dave Brandon briefly right after it mentions Hackett. I had to lol at this line: ''You send him an email at midnight, you're likely to have your answer before you wake up the next morning.''

He's more tied to the hire of Harbaugh. If Harbaugh wants absolute control and Hacket negotiated this into the contract, I feel Hacket would be 100% inclined to follow control negotiations. Rather than some new AD who might follow those for a few years then start imposing too much of his own will on the program. "Control", in a contract or not, has more to do with people personalities, and who better to abide by those rules than the one who agreed to them in the first place. Maybe I'm off base a little, but unless Harbaugh himself requests a specific AD, I would certainly want Hacket to remain as the AD if he seals the deal with Harbaugh.

I was highly skeptical of him at first - as were many of you - and if he really lands Harbaugh, I'd assert he's done his job almost flawlessly since his arrival

  • Removed Hoke and did it gracefully
  • Removed Chief Marketing Officer guy; gracefully
  • Executed a near top secret coaching search
  • PRESUMABLY Landed Jim Harbaugh and spent the money to do so

I mean, if on the day he was announced as temporary AD we had all listed "What does Hackett need to do to stay on as permanent AD?" I doubt any of us would've dared to dream he'd even do that much.

no matter how this plays out next week. And I'm glad Schlissel brought him in. I had my doubts at first, but he's been brilliant. Everything DB wasn't, he's the guy they should have had running things all along. Brandon would have given us Hoke 2.0 in less than a week. As this has drawn out, only the media have been insane. The Athletic Department has been the model of patient discretion. Refreshing after the past regime.

He had a plan and is executing it perfectly.

But to be fair to our Sparty lurkers, Mark Dantonio has a pretty good plan too:

Hackett Is Not Done Yet
Need lower PSDs, lower priced season tickets, lower priced concessions($1 water). Improved game day experience. Firing Hoke and hiring Harbaugh is a good start. Also, he has not made any progress hiring his full time replacement. We have the same standards that were not met by Brandon.
