Would you take Braxton Miller if he transfers?

Submitted by lilpenny1316 on

One of ESPN's college football analysts was on the radio this morning talking about OSU's QB situation next year.  They mentioned the possibility Braxton Miller graduates early and transfers to play somewhere else next year.  Would you like to see our next HC go after him?

If all these 70-85% gut feelings are accurate, then we know our next HC has run read option in San Fran.  I think Shane and our other QBs have the talent to be good, but I don't know if they would be our best option come late August.  I assume we could deal with a Buckeye transferring in since there seemed to not be a large, vocal opposition to Herman in the head coaching posts.  Is it worth it to "recruit" Braxton Miller?

Nope. Plain and simply no. Although he is better then what we currently have (not accounting for unproven talent) I wouldn't take him. Honestly I felt like Kenny G was a better QB. Sure he didn't have the high end athleticism braxton has but he was more consistent and steady imo.

I would absolutely take him no matter what style of offense the new coach runs because he's a talented athlete, but he's be absolutely terrible as a pure drop back passer in a pro style offense.

OSU fan here.  Two thoughts to this thread:

1)  For those saying that they wouldn't take him because he's not that great of a QB...um, ok.  He was the B1G player of the year two years in a row (sophomore and junior seasons).  And as a freshman playing for a Luke Fickell-coached team that was allergic to passing the ball, he almost single-handedly beat UM at Ann Arbor.  As a true freshman.  He has broken a ton of records and was on pace to own almost all of them in the B1G until he got hurt this year 12 days before the season started.

Is he the best pocket passer in the world?  No.  Far from it.  But according to McShay and other NFL scouts, he was projected to be drafted around the 5th round as a quarterback before his injury.  He has above-average arm strength and has the ability to make all the NFL throws.  It's his accuracy that holds him back--but that can be taught.  For those who say he is only marginally better at throwing the football than Denard was, I repeat:  Braxton will be drafted by an NFL team as a quarterback.  Not as a running back.

2)  Now onto the topic at hand.  I've always learned that you should never say never, but this is about as close to a situation where this is apropos.  Braxton Miller is a diehard Buckeye fan from childhood.  He has a Buckeye tattoo on his shoulder.  He has said in recent interviews (one this week) that he will return to the Buckeyes for his Fifth year understanding that it's not necessarily a given that he is the starting QB (though he should be and will be favored to be).  He is not coming to Ann Arbor.  And, even if he hit his head and wanted to come to Ann Arbor, the Buckeyes wouldn't give him to you.  Get real.

One situation I would consider if I were Braxton is to play for Mark Helfrich at Oregon now that Mariota will be gone.  There would be little drop-off from Mariota to Miller -- both are Heisman-caliber quarterbacks with similar skillsets (mariota more accurate passer but Miller more athletically gifted).

But interesting question nonetheless.  My question for you guys is out of your current QB crop, who starts next year?  From a Buckeye fan's perspective, Bellomy is awful and Shane Morris hasn't been the same since he had that bout of mono his senior year.  Is Speight the answer?  True frosh Malzone?

Fair comments sir.

I am a UM fan but in a realistic world Oregon is championship level quality and loses their QB, and has a system set up for Miller to step right into.   UM is a 5-7 team.  I mean we can keep it as simple as that.  Also no akward game vs your prior team.  I am sure he will still love OSU even if he is displaced there so he will not want to play them.

It is a very moot topic.

Miller is a bad qb.Most people have been pointing out the guys was a legit heisman contender. A couple people pointed out he is coming off 2 shoulder injuries and may never be the same qb again. I personally wouldnt want him here. As a Michigan fan, there are things I won't accept just to help us win. Accepting transfers from OSU is dirty IMO, I wouldn't want us to sink to that level.

As for next year, I think it will either be Morris. He has the tools. Unfortunatly this will be his 3rd OC in his 3rd year with the program, hopefully he handles it better then Gardner. Speight is also an option but Morris has all the tools Harbugh had in college, I think Jimmy is going to like him and give him every chance to succeed.

Morris. He was thrown into the fire this year but he still has an arm and a head.

I think there's a pretty strong consensus on this side already that no, there's no way in hell or Ohio he'll come here for a grad transfer season, and yes, if there was a chance we'd welcome him.

OSU's own QB situation may not warrant a transfer anyway. J.T. Barrett will be coming off of an injury that doesn't necessarily have you back in a year's time, and certainly won't have him back for spring practice. There will inevitably be "I'm 99%" quotes come fall practice that will be 78% bullshit because that's what football players do. Anyway Ohio State would very much appreciate having Braxton around, and Miller would have all of spring to take 1st team snaps. If I had to guess right now where he'll be come 9/1/2015, it's starting for the Buckeyes.

not going to happen.  I seriously doubt Miller would want to come here after playing at OSU for 4 years UNLESS he were to leave on bad terms - and wanted to "stick it to the Man".

to having the best QB in the conference, maybe in the nation, come to our team?  if he has legitimate interesting in coming to Michigan, which I highly doubt, I'm sure whoever the next HC is would welcome him with open arms

Braxton Miller is far from a guaranteed success in the NFL, so he'd be wise to transfer to a graduate school that would be better for his major (communications)  UM is the #4 school in the nation for communications majors (OSU not in top 20)

If he came to UM, BM--who just lost his OC at Ohio--would also have a better shot at the NFL,  He could also end up being taught by Jim Harbaugh: a former an NFL coach who won both an AFC and NFC championship (as HC)--one who had one of the best NFL HC win % in history and was named  AP NFL coach of the year.  Oh, yes, and the same guy, was also an NFL QB who went to the Pro Bowl and was named UPI AFC player of the year.

Besides, BM would be the clear #1 QB at UM; whereas falling to the #2-3 at Ohio could be the death of any future NFL QB career.

Yes but it won't happen. If he decides to transfer--and that's a big if--there might be conditions on release, such as not going to a rival school. I'd bet he either goes to a non-conf contender in search of a QB (FSU, Oregon for example) or FCS because he doesn't want to sit another year.

HIGHLY unlikely that Braxton would transfer from OSU to UM. Even if Oscar Meyer takes out a hit on him and his family and Witness Protection sends them to Ann Arbor.

Is that in the pros you can run thread option and theoretically keep your QB for a decade or more. Going read option this year with Miller means a commitment to that style offense to some degree, and he does not have the QBs to run that in the future. Plus, they don't run much of that in SF anymore. Also, this is the guy that turned Alex Smith from a huge bust into a legit NFL starter, I suspect he might do well with Morris and Speight.

I honestly don't think he's going to transfer anywhere to be honest.  He already has a kid and I think another one is on the way.  All his familty lives in Ohio too, IIRC.

If he doesn't return to OSU it's because he entered the draft.  I'd say there's a 75% chance he returns next year.

Very slim chance he transfers anywhere...and no possible way he tranfers to UM.

Without thinking about it I'd want him. Even if the arm is not nearly what it was he's still got experience and can still run. He's a difference make on the level of Denard but with a better arm ( doubt his arm has went all noodle like Denard's did).

That all said, I seriously doubt he would come to Michigan just because it is Michigan and he's all Buckeye. No idea if he will even transfer and if he dies where he will transfer to, but my money is on Oregon.

Just too good of an athlete to turn away. Plus, Jim Harbaugh + Miller would be one a hell of a spark to start another 10 year war. It'll never happen though.

I'd take him though, hell of a player. Wouldn't Ohio have to approve this? In what world does that happen... I'd like to see him at Oregon, Baylor or UCLA someplace with a starter leaving and an offense he can flourish in.
