CC: Bob Stoops?
Dan Wetzel suggests that Michigan should pursue Bob Stoops. Dan thinks that if Coach Stoops were going to leave OU, there would be no better time, and no better place than Michigan. While I would never say never, this appears about as likely as a Freaks and Geeks reunion show. Which now, come to think of it, begs the question why there isn't a Freaks and Geeks reunion show, but I digress.

He's been out there for 14 years, why would he laterally transfer to Ann Arbor? I mean he'd have to shop for a snow shovel, rubber boots, snow tires...

My brother went to OU. He says that like a third of the students are from Texas and have never seen snow before, so the first time that it snows every year it's hilarious to see all the people from Texas biting it as they attempt to walk to class.
My brother also claims to have been part of a (low speed) 8 car crash at an intersection in Norman because people there aren't very used to driving in snow. Apparently the cops just showed up and had no idea how to assess who was at fault so nobody got a ticket.

We'll just lie to him about the weather. By the time he gets here it will be too late.
Isn't that how we get our recruits to come here?

Stoops will be down south recruiting!

...and you do realize our current coach and situation, right?

I was watching the Browns/Bengals game and just logged in.

I'd gladly take him.

Not a fan? Are you insane? Stoops in easily Top 5 in the country.
November 6th, 2014 at 9:33 PM ^
yeah fuck that guy and his 166 wins, National Championship ring, 8 P5 conference titles, 9 bowl wins, 5 coach of the year awards, 2 Heisman Winner QBs (with two other finalists)... not MICHIGAN material

LMFAO, Stoops is a great coach! Yeah, this guy also thinks Kate Upton is too fat and looks ugly.

Why would he leave Oklahoma for Michigan in 2014?

I really like what Stoops has done at Oklahoma I just don't share Dan Wetzel's opinion that he'd leave Norman. Ever.
November 6th, 2014 at 9:42 PM ^
I used to like Wetzel, but this article smells a bit of mailing it in.
This line:
"The perception around the NFL is that if he's let go by San Francisco, a shot with another franchise (New York Jets? Oakland? Miami? A new L.A. team?), featuring more control and money, seems far more likely.
The Jets? LA? There isn't even a team in LA.
I could see him staying in the Bay area with Oakland. I could even see him taking the Falcons job. But if more control is what Harbaugh wants, where would he get more control than in college?
I swear, I think writing bullshit articles about the next Michigan football coach has become its own cottage industry.
November 6th, 2014 at 7:43 PM ^
Isn't basically every movie Judd Apatow makes a semi-reunion of Freaks and Geeks?
But yeah, probably not going to happen with Stoops. And again, Michigan needs a guy who either makes a large part of the fanbase happy (i.e. a Harbaugh) or someone who is young enough to stick around (Stoops is 54, would be almost 55 by start of season) and (you'd hope) have some roots in the area. Stoops would be a big hire, but I just think a part of the fanbase would be bothered by an outsider.
November 6th, 2014 at 7:48 PM ^
I'd say he has connections to the Midwest. Not like that there is a snowball's chance in hell that his happens. I don't know what Dan Wetzel is thinking with this one.
November 6th, 2014 at 7:59 PM ^
Yeah, but he hasn't been active in the area for since he was at Kent State in the late 80's. Yeah he's a national name, but as we've heard before local coaches can be finnicky and need some relationships to form. That's my concern with the age stuff; is he going to be willing at this point to put the work into transitioning from his Texas-heavy ties to the Midwest footprint.
I agree Wetzel is kinda making this one up.
November 6th, 2014 at 7:55 PM ^
I guess that means it's Harbaugh or bust. Getting someone like Mullen or Jones is 10x the risk of hiring the only coach to win every BCS Bowl game.
November 6th, 2014 at 8:02 PM ^
I'm not sure if the fanbase would revolt, but the same group that keeps harping on "Michigan Man" probably won't be happy if Michigan goes for Stoops when there are a couple Michigan Men out there (Harbaugh, Miles) who are conceivable candidates, unless guys like Miles and Harbaugh turn them down formally. That seems unlikely.
November 6th, 2014 at 9:45 PM ^
The same group that keeps harping on a "Michigan Man" need to get a fucking clue.
It's been repeated ad naseum - Bo was not a "Michigan Man" when he came here.
Let's get the best possible candidate that we can.
November 6th, 2014 at 10:14 PM ^
The crowd that's supposedly clamoring for a "Michigan Man" is becoming a bogeyman type character. Is there a single poster here who's insisting that we hire a Michigan Man just for the sake of hiring a Michigan Man? I get that a lot of people want Harbaugh, but Harbaugh would be a terrific candidate for any college job. I feel like there are 100 posts per day complaining about all of the people demanding a Michigan Man coach and 0 posts per day demanding a Michigan Man coach.
Maybe this is an issue with some former players or with whatever part of the Michigan fan base doesn't post here, but I really don't see this major part of our fan base that's demanding that only coaches with Michigan ties are considered.
November 6th, 2014 at 10:57 PM ^
I was just thinking the same. The Michigan Man thing has been dead for a few years now from what I've seen.

November 7th, 2014 at 9:23 AM ^
Bo said it b/c Bill Frieder was going to bolt to ASU after the tournament
in that context, it meant someone who wanted to be at Michigan for the long haul
"A Michigan man will coach Michigan, not an Arizona State man."
THAT IS THE WHOLE QUOTE - please do not use it out of context!
Anyone can be a Michigan man - if they are willing to committ themselves 100% to the university and act at the very highest levels of integrity!

Stoops to Michigan before Harbaugh to Michigan is asinine.
November 6th, 2014 at 7:51 PM ^
Stoops is the poop, but Bill Belichik is just as likely.
November 6th, 2014 at 7:52 PM ^
How exactly are the odds of landing Harbaugh looking longer by the week?
November 6th, 2014 at 7:57 PM ^
Because Dan Wetzel says so, I guess.
November 6th, 2014 at 7:57 PM ^
Wetzel just continues reiterating what a long shot it is to land Harbaugh but never provides a single reason why.
November 6th, 2014 at 8:03 PM ^
Prefers coaching at highest level for competitive reasons, wife may not want to move to Michigan, he may not like recruiting...really there are a number of reasons why he wouldn't want to come.
The truth is no one knows what Harbaugh wants. Everything that has been discussed is other's conjecturing what Harbaugh desires.
November 6th, 2014 at 8:03 PM ^
They might not be getting longer, but they're pretty long as it is.
Michigan hiring Harbaugh would be like a .200 batter hitting a game-winning grand slam with his team down three runs in the bottom of the 9th. It's not impossible, but it's highly unlikely.
November 6th, 2014 at 8:11 PM ^
We'll see. We already know he's not going to be back next year in SF and that's half the battle.
November 6th, 2014 at 8:13 PM ^
Even if his departure from the 49ers is a foregone conclusion, Michigan would be competing with at least a half dozen other NFL teams for his services (including one right across the Bay, at which he started his coaching career), all of whom can offer more money and a higher level of competition. Even Michigan's supposed trump card, the opportunity to have absolute control over all aspects of the program, may not be such a trump card in light of the precedent set by Pete Carroll's deal with the Seahawks that made him coach and GM. Harbaugh probably has the leverage to negotiate a similar deal.
