CC: Rex Ryan? just a question not a scoop
OK RAISE YOUR HAND -- HOW MANY OF YOU NERVOUSLY KEEP CHECKING MGOBLOG EVERY 30 SECONDS LIKE ME, HOPING TO SEE REALLY, REALLY GOOD BREAKING NEWS?
Heck, at this point, I'd settle for more of Greg Henson's fantasy ramblings...
Anyway, since Rex Ryan is about to be filed by the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets, it comes to mind that he might make more in a college HC gig than the next, upcoming NFL DC gig. Assuming his wife can keep her shoes on (not that there's anything wrong with it), you'd think some school might see him as a potential Pete Carroll... a smart guy failed at the NFL, well at least failed at the Jets, where everyone has failed, and who might attract some talent to a school given his NFL background. He certainly is "old school," favoring defense and a strong running game.
Not saying I want Rex Ryan. Not saying he's better suited for college. But he does have a bunch of college jobs earlier in his career. Am I crazy for thinking that he shouldn't at least be considered as an outside candidate?

Seems he's just another defense oriented coach. A little identity on offense would be nice.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:42 AM ^
We don't need him to bring his tire fire of an offense over here. Please God, no.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:37 AM ^
Yes, you are crazy.

I would rather take a chance on his brother Rob. At least his hair would be entertaining.

There has to be a better available option.

thought. I think he might actually be a good fit at the collegiate level. Similar to Carroll, defensive minded players coach who could be a very good recruiter and put a solid staff together.

If Rex Ryan were hired as Michigan's coach, I seriously might switch my allegiance to a school like Northwestern until he's fired. That guy is a buffoon.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:48 AM ^
Honest question. Do you view him as a buffoon in terms of off the field antics and all the drama surrounding his team or in terms of an actual coach. I'm not advocating for him by any means, but I think he's one heck of a coach, especially defensively.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:41 AM ^
He would be another BH but with a crazy side to him....so, no. I value competence over showmanship.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:42 AM ^
Did you not see Brians post in a Unverified Voracity about NFL coaches making the move to college and the lack of success? At this point can we just get CC talk when there is a pretty good rumor or something actually happens. At this point any name thrown out just annoys me until Brandon or Hoke or both are gone.

No coach on the planet could take the JETS to an NFC Championship. Should probably put him in Canton for that accomplishment.

Is f'd up. He's consistently hired some of the worst OCs in the NFL over and over, all of whom have f'd up ideas on football. "Try to do a little bit of everything so the defense has to prepare for everything, end up being good at nothing." I remember Chris B. Brown of Smartfootball having a meltdown during a Jets game a few years ago and tweeting something like, "The Jets have 19 different ways to run a toss sweep left but don't have a single cover 3 beater" or something to that effect.
No relavant experience in college, and his defense requires a LOT of high level thinking from defenders to make it work. Don't think he translates.

I don't know if I'd say he failed as head coach of Pats. In his 3 years with the Patriots they went: 10-6, 9-7 and 8-8. He was let go after the 8-8 season, but that isn't awful.

After watching his attempted trick play kickoff return at least I know I would be entertained on Saturdays

between Rex Ryan and Hoke is that the humor appreciated from press conferences is that Rex intends his to be funny.

How about CC: Marques Slocum's Fuck Lion
October 27th, 2014 at 11:48 AM ^
This is a worse idea than the one about bringing back Gary Moeller to coach out the remainder of the season. And that was a joke. That's right, this idea, is that fucking bad.

As a guy who has been forced to watch WAY more Jets games than I ever expected in my life, Rex Ryan would bea turrible head coach at Michigan. His teams have been bad for years now, he can't develop a QB, his offenses are always wonky, his defenses are adequate, and he can't keep his name out of the newpaper for saying and doing dumb stuff.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:49 AM ^
He wears the same size shirt as Brady Hoke so the AD would surely save some money. And he was the DC for the Cincinnati Bearcats in their Humanitarian Bowl winning season so we could continue the low expectations.

It's been fun taking short breaks in the middle of my work day to visit the site and see what names follow the "CC." Thought I'd seen it all until this thread. Yep, let's go get a dingbat with a foot fetish. Soon I expect to see:
CC: Gerry Faust (we need a coach with enthusiasm!)
CC: Les Steckel (we need a coach with discipline!)
CC: Bobby Ross (we need a coach who talks funny!)
I understand we're sinkin' low, but how desparate can one fanbase get?
Keep 'em coming!

Well, I did compare Stitt to Faust in another CC thread. You're right, though, that doesn't technically count.

This a man who decided it would be a good idea to get a tat of his wife wearing a Mark Sanchez jersey--which is all kinds of weird. Pass...

Tough D minded guy, well known, strong NFL ties (especially with his pops and brother), took the Jets deep in the playoffs with Sanchez(!).

if we could recruit players out of the league. Otherwise I don't get the point. Doesn't it just mean he'll be able to get a DC job with another team?

I'm surprised by how much shade has been thrown Rex's way, though I do think we're all a bit testy about this coaching search, myself included.
Let me start by saying that I don't think Rex should be the head coach at Michigan.
However, if you asked me if he would be a bad coach, I'd say no. He'd certainly be better than Hoke. Many of you have said that Rex has an average defense and a bad offense. That is simply not true. In fact, his defense has been consistently in the top third of the league and in some years, he's had top 5 defenses (YPG). The guy is a blowhard, but he can coach a defense. He has an eye for talent too. I think he can thrive at the college level in the right situation.
Now, there are two sides to my perspective. I'm a Patriots fan so I've had the pleasure of laughing at his teams. But at the same time, being a fan of a rival, I can say that I have respect for how he coaches up his teams. Again, I don't think he's right for Michigan and I think that the average defense/terrible offense and Hoke comparisons are completely off base. He at least has good defenses.
My qualms are with the coordinators he's brought in, especially offensively. It seemed like they tried ridiculously hard to make Sanchez fit. They ousted Schottenheimer, who has done pretty well in STL this year. Did you not give your OC the best chance to get the most out of that offense? Also, the Jets have issues beyond the coaching as that front office is incredibly dysfunctional. Would Rex do better in a situation where he'd have complete control over what's going on?
Do I think Rex could succeed at the college level? Yes. Are there a lot of questions and uncertainty, moreso than a proven college coach? Absolutely. Should Rex be the next coach at Michigan? No.
I can't believe I'm defending someone associated with the Jets.

Hiring Rex Ryan, or any Ryan for that matter, at a program like Michigan that has a history of in-house drama that spills out into the public forum is an explosively bad option. It would be like the Red Sox hiring Bobby Valentine: a 100% chance it will end in a publically, hilariously horrible fashion (from our rivals' perspective), and it wouldn't take more than a year or two. We don't need a clown who constantly puts his foot in his mouth, we need a tough football coach who chooses his words wisely (oh, and you know...can develop talent).

No. Just no.

Rex Ryan is a clown. The foot fetish videos with him and his wife. Geting a tattoo of one of his own football players. You want to send this jackass into a recruits home? You want parents to trust their children with him?
I wouldn't even want him on campus, much less getting involved in the lives of young athletes.
