Bellomy over Morris?

Submitted by imdwalrus on
This has been bothering me since last night... ESPN said repeatedly in the broadcast that they'd been told by the coaching staff that Morris was ready to go and would back up Gardner if need be. He didn't. Morris never saw the field and Bellomy went in instead. This wouldn't have bothered me if ESPN hadn't made it crystal clear they were expecting Morris to go in. They almost seemed surprised he didn't. All I want to know is, what happened? Yet another injury? Did they lie about his status? Missing helmet? Given how Bellomy had played previously and did play last night, I can't imagine they thought he'd be more likely to contribute than Morris...

From what I understand, Bellomy would hands down win a practice Heisman. The kid is great...in practice. Plus, he calls Hoke "dad," and therefore no question should be a scholarship QB at Michigan forgodsakes.

Bellomy is arguably the worst QB on any roster in the B10. I firmly believe that. I'm still haunted by images of him running like a chicken with his head cut off looking for a helmet during the Minnesota game. Ill prepared is putting it kindly.

As for Morris, my initial thought is that coach Hoke wanted to avoid further controversy by putting him out there. Nevermind that we are two weeks removed from the incident. This was after all a "probable mild concussion." You'd think that two weeks later the kid could have gone in there in what was a crucial juncture of the game.

If you're wary of putting Morris back in there, fine, that's understandable.  I don't think any of us would expect him to play so soon after a concussion.  But lying and saying he's been "cleared to play" and will be going in there if Gardner gets dinged up is status quo for this guy and just fucking stupid.

We all know why he's been dressing.  Probably an idea from the same guy who thought up "probable, mild" concussion.

...that said we fired RRod for not being a Michigan Man last night and mentioned nothing about the fact that our defense was awful and not improving?

Let me guess, when Hoke gets canned, ESPN will say its because of the concussion with Morris and not because of the deteriorating record and lack of player development?

More worrisome is that Speight hasnt been able to pass Bellomy on the depth chart. Redshirts are nice and all but not when your 2-deep is injured.

to further injury.  In hindsight, it was the best decision.

I'm no Hoke for 2015 advocate, but I'm glad they didn't put Shane in.

Oh, and as to the play calling with Bellomy in there, I was hoping they'd go deep jump ball to Funchess.  You give yourself a chance to score that way, or you get an arm-punt, or you get an incompletion, or Bellomy gets tackled and fumbles.

Too bad Funchess got hurt on Bellomy's first play.

People are slowly coming to the realization that Bellomy and Morris are similar caliber players, in that they're both MAC-level talent at best. I know people don't want to believe that because he had a bunch of stars next to his name and can throw a football over a mountain. But he's just not a Big Ten level QB talent.

Not the same player.  Morris is talented but extremely raw.  He can move the ball but just isn't consistent.  He went 6-10 passing in the first half against Minnesota before going 1-9 in the second (in fairness, injury most likely played a part).

Bellomy OTOH simply doesn't have the talent.  He can't make most of the throws required in a D-I offense.

Morris has all the talent and physical tools to play for any power-5 conference team. He's just a big project, which is why I feel like as long as our current staff is in place, he's doomed to fail. Because of the whole, you know, "our coaches can't develop talent" thing.

If he was at an Alabama, Stanford, or somewhere else like that, he might be in a much better spot in terms of his development.

I'm going to be completely honest. I was STOKED when Bellomy came into the game. If Gardner can't play give him a shot. And if he can't cut it give Wilton Speight or Bryan Cleary a shot. I'm not saying that Morris can't get the job done, I'd just like to see the coachingi staff use all of their options if this truly is a make or break season. One of these kids can do the job, just figure out which one.

Last thing you want to do is broadcast to the world that your back up is out, and therefore Bellomy is one hit away from the field. Hoke and staff made the right call here. If Morris was ready, but hobbled, it is OK to let Bellomy play for a series or two while Devin is being evaluated or treated to go into the game. If Devin had to be out for the rest of the game, then go with Morris as your best chance to win at that point.

Honest question - why would broadcasting it to the world that your backup is out make a difference? Its not like the opposing team is suddenly giong to try harder to get to the QB and do him harm. That assumes that they are not playing to their potential, that they are somewhat lackadaisical because they know their opposing team has a competent backup. What am I missing?

This is legitimately one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.  Now we're playing gamesmanship with our backup quarterbacks?

The answer is simple.  Shane Morris is physically not ready to play.  The coaching staff is using him to push their agenda (he was fine, no big deal, etc.) which is fucking terrible.

they we won't see Morris again this year unless both DG & RB were out. I think the school just wants to get that event completely out of the national memory for a bit. Yet, if you see RB coming in for DG it's immediately going to remind everyone of it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Like agree that I think he will start at QB next year initially, but soon after he will lose his job. He has never demonstrated he has what it takes.
He has actually looked worse than I remember Gardner looking during his first season and the few minutes he played as a sophomore before his injury. His mechanics are cumbersome and his decision making is very similar to that of a Brett Farve, chuck it as hard as you can and just pray it doesn't sail and get picked. Very little accuracy. He will never last as an effective starter. Wilton or even Malzone will overtake Shane IMO by week 6.

Why not walk ons?

I do not understand why we don't just put out an ad for walk ons. There has to be somebody competant within 30 miles of Ann Arbor. How did we get to the point of having 4 QB's who aren't great passers?
