OT: Let's Go Tigers Playoff Open Thread
Chen takes on Verlander today. First pitch is supposed to be at 1207. Hopefully the 'Gers can even up the series today.

never heard that one before...
need to get the bats going today.
October 3rd, 2014 at 11:57 AM ^
Tigers didn't look very good last night. But it was hard to tell because the announcers were way to busy stroking the O's bullpen off. Never heard that much bias in national televised baseball game.
October 3rd, 2014 at 11:59 AM ^
might need some lotion after the stroking he got from them last night
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:31 PM ^
wouldn't he need lotion before the stroking? maybe that's just me

look too much into the final score. That game ended on the double play in the 8th. Miggy just gave them a quick middle finger after that to let them know he would see them again.
We played awful. They played really well. This series is going to the D 1-1.

Tigers didn't look that good last night. Pretty much a must win game today, pretty tough to go down 0-2 in a five game series. GO TIGERS!!
October 3rd, 2014 at 11:58 AM ^
Come on Verlander! Don't make me throw things at the TV!
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:03 PM ^
5 games playoff series are stupid.
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:10 PM ^
I've never understood the 5-game series. It makes no sense to play 162 games and then have a shorter opening series than every other sport.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:02 PM ^
the NBA had 5 game first rounds for a long time... if MLB did 7 game series for all 3 rounds of the playoffs the the world series could be played in the first week of november... and going from the mid west to the east it gets pretty cold at night come the 2nd week of october... and if you have ever played baseball when its cold out, you know that its not a whole lot of fun...
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:48 PM ^
I would prefer three 7 game series, it could easily be done by shortening the regular season to 150 games and starting the playoffs in the middle of september

What an awful managerial decision to start Verlander instead of David Price.
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:22 PM ^
Because Price is a better pitcher and it would have allowed him to pitch in game 5 (If necessary)
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:14 PM ^
Well we'll know more in a few hours. Verlander was sharp to end the season.
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:29 PM ^
Verlander was better in his last couple of starts, but Price is a better strikeout pitcher. Playing in a Home Run friendly park, do you know what counters Home Runs? Strikeouts. Plus it would have freed Price up to pitch in game 5 out of the pen.
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:38 PM ^
He looks sharp today.
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:55 PM ^
He does so far. Trust me I hope that he pitches great and they win this game. I just think even if they do, it was mistake by the numbers, to start him over Price.
October 3rd, 2014 at 3:07 PM ^
Do you know what is a bad tendency in a Home Run friendly park? Giving up home runs. Price had 25 gopher balls this season, 8 more than JV.
Also, Verlander is 7-0 in Camden Yards. Finally, Price's two brilliant starts to end the year were both in Comerica -- might as well keep that constant.
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:20 PM ^
get a calender out.
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:23 PM ^
Yeah that was 5 days ago, what's your point?
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:33 PM ^
Um... Sunday day game to Friday day game equals 5 full days. Minus the few hours it took for Price to pitch on Sunday.
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:38 PM ^
I should buy a calender

I think its a shrewd move by Ausmus
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:26 PM ^
First off, I called the decision awful not Ausmus himself. But I would rather have the pitcher with a 3.26 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 271 strikeouts start over the pitcher with a 4.54 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 159 strikeouts. You know the better pitcher. And if you think that Brad Ausmus didn't start Price in Camden because he gives up Home Runs at Comerica, then you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

No certainties, JV is pitching well lately and he very well may throw a great game. I just think looking ahead to game 5 (where Price would have been available out of the pen) and Price being the better pitcher (by far) in 2014 is an oversight that a big league manager shouldn't make.
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:57 PM ^
As referenced already JV has good numbers at Camden and against the O's overall, while Price has pitched better at CoPa than on the road in a Tigers uniform, plus the Orioles have seen him a lot more considering they were a division rival.
It's far from an awful decision from Ausmus, it can be debated but it's not a batshit crazy idea.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:16 PM ^
It still might be an awful decision that worked out well. The best, most unbiased way to evaluate a decision is based on results. A decision is good or bad based on the information you have available to you at the time the decision was made. All the information available suggests that Price is a *much* better pitcher than Verlander at this time.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:20 PM ^
Thank you, I am glad someone understands things like statistics.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:22 PM ^
My point was, that in my opinion, whether JV pitches great or not, based on numbers this was a bad decision.
October 3rd, 2014 at 3:00 PM ^
frpm bless you boys
The Tigers are hoping that he has turned things around just in time.Verlander allowed just two earned runs with 10 strikeouts against no walks over 15 1/3 innings in his final two starts of the regular season. He went 3–0 with 2.89 ERA in his last four starts — all Tiger victories — and has won five of his last six decisions.
Verlander also has a nice record in the ALDS, he is 4–0 with a 1.79 ERA in seven games. He currently has a 30 inning scoreless streak in ALDS games. At Camden Yards, Verlander is 7–0 with a 2.84 ERA in eight career starts.
It looks like Scott Barry will be the home plate ump for today’s game. JV is 4-0 with a .067 era in 4 career starts with Barry behind the plate.

All numbers from a small sample size and some from over a year ago.
2014 Regular Season Stats
JV: 4.54 ERA/1.40 WHIP/159 Ks
DP: 3.26 ERA/1.08 WHIP/271 Ks
These are all the numbers you need.

After how gimpy he looked last night, I'm surprised Davis is in center again today. Hope he's healing up and moving like himself again soon!
