fire Brandon - Schlissel email response
Thank you for contacting us and sharing your concerns about the state of intercollegiate athletics at the University of Michigan. I greatly appreciate the thoughtful input that I and other leaders have received from you and many other members of our community. Such input only serves to enhance my feeling of pride at becoming a member of the Michigan family.
The passion you bring to U-M, and in particular U-M Athletics, is both amazing and apparent. We appreciate your commitment to the university and support of our student-athletes. This depth and intensity of dedication help make Michigan a great and special institution. We value your support and recognize your concerns.
On the issue of student-athlete safety, I am extremely disappointed in the events surrounding the handling of an on-field injury to Shane Morris, one of our football players. I have apologized for the breakdown in our system of responding to player injuries. New measures to correct issues identified last weekend and enhance player safety will be implemented for our October 4 game at Rutgers. I support these immediate changes in medical protocols that the Athletic Department has identified in its initial assessment, and I have instructed the Department to do a thorough review of our in-game player safety procedures with the involvement of experts from our Health System.
I pledge to make sure that our procedures going forward reflect the very best practices for student-athlete safety and will enforce the necessary accountability to protect the health of our players.
Is everyone getting this response to emails calling for new AD?
Since my arrival in July, I have spent a great deal of time getting to know our campus and students. I have been particularly struck by the conviction and drive of our student-athletes both on and off the field, and I am focused on doing all I can to support them in their academic, athletic and community efforts. Like all aspects of our university, I aspire for athletics to continue to be among the “leaders and best” and will work toward this goal in the months and years ahead.
We know that we must find the way to maintain the traditions we hold so dear while keeping our athletic program vibrant and competitive into the future. We are learning from our experiences and we are listening to alumni and fans. I feel that I owe it to our university community, our alumni, the many fans of our athletic teams, our student-athletes, and the dedicated leaders and staff of our Athletic Department to thoughtfully and deliberately consider the right way forward.
Thank you again for taking the time to write. I hope that you continue to support our student-athletes, our athletic traditions, and our great university as passionately as you always have.
Go Blue!
Sincerely,
Mark Schlissel

So...exactly the same response he sent that other guy.

"Exact" and "same" are synonymous.

Exact = not approximated, very precise
Same = identical, not different (from compared)
If they were synonymous people would say things like, "did you get a same reading on that measurement?" and "These two shirts are the exact color."
So, no.
October 3rd, 2014 at 10:03 AM ^
There is literally no point in saying something like, "That's the exact same thing."
Fine, if you won't agree, then it's for sure redundant to say that phrase, as someone else said above. I just never understood why seemingly everyone in this country uses those two words back-to-back.
October 3rd, 2014 at 10:27 AM ^
There is a point; it draws emphasis to the fact that they are the same.
Also, if he had just said 'the same,' a reasonable interpretation is that they express the same ideas. By adding exactly, it's more clear that he means verbatim because we use 'exactly the same' to mean specially, the same to the last detail.
October 3rd, 2014 at 10:34 AM ^
I disagree, so let's leave it at that.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:09 PM ^
No, I disagree.
October 3rd, 2014 at 10:34 AM ^
It is a bit of a tautology, but definitely not synonomous.
October 3rd, 2014 at 11:34 AM ^
October 3rd, 2014 at 12:46 PM ^
Disagree. Two things that are similar could be said to be, "nearly the same." Two things that are identical are, "exactly the same." Now go back under your rock.
October 3rd, 2014 at 10:26 AM ^
If i were to say, "I have a Nissan and he has the same car." One car could be red and one could be white most people would not disagree that they have the same car. But if you ad an adverb "I have a Nissan and he has the exact same car" most would assume that both cars are the same color, year and so forth. English isn't math 1+1 does not always = 2. That is why I hate it.

except when 1 + 1 = 10
BOOM. I just went binary on your ass son!

Yeah, but are the responses identical?

Regardless of the fact that it is the same email I like this response. It's a professional (looking at you Dave!), well written statement. He didn't have to respond at all, and frankly I wouldn't find it rude if he didn't. University President is already a busy enough job, especially at a place like Michigan, but then you throw in this whole mess and the fumbling of this whole mess, as well as a student body who is pissed of enough to rally about the fumbling of this whole mess and a bunch of reporters circling campus like sharks. He's got quite a bit on his plate.
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:10 AM ^
that's the form response I recieved too. This line is a gem:
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:16 AM ^
a little "Seven Nation Army" and some fireworks won't cure. Tradition at it's best!
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:17 AM ^
So the guy (or likely his administrative assistant) sent a form letter back to you because it seems as though he has one or two things to take care of in his position as the President of the University of Michigan that might have a higher priority that deciding what to do about Dave Brandon.
Imagine that. The nerve of that guy.
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:23 AM ^
My posting is neutral, I made, and am making, no comment on the content.
You seem to think I am disparaging the response.
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:35 AM ^
I was too hasty in my response. There have been so many new threads and comments from people who want to fire the new University President for the shocking crime of not acquiescing to their personal time table for firing Dave Brandon and Brady Hoke that I lumped your post in with those others.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:44 AM ^
of his letter. You may want to fix that.
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:26 AM ^
I honestly don't understand why anyone would be upset at a non-personal reply in this situation. I don't think the OP was upset necessarily though, from th sound of it.
I sent an e-mail as well and got the same reply - I simply wanted to speak my mind and be on record with many others expressing their discontent. Glad to see folks are doing this though.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:06 AM ^
I agree with those who are not upset that Schlissel is sending form replies. The man has other things to do, but he took the time to craft a one-size-fits-all response, and instructed his admin to reply.
However, we should keep on sending these e-mails. It is extremely likely that the administration is tallying and categorizing responses, even if this is done on a clerical level. Each "vote" against the current AD counts in a way that makes sending those e-mails worthwhile. Just don't expect a personal response.
What I'd like to see is the e-mail from J. Ira Harris saying "I want me money back, and I want it now!". I bet those e-mails get a personal response, as they should.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:44 AM ^
that would contradict Dave Brandon getting fired.
I see it as "no news is good news". If Schlissel wanted to back Brandon personally, he would have explicitly supported Brandon by naming him in the e-mail.
October 3rd, 2014 at 11:10 AM ^
If he were 100% going to keep Brandon, he'd say so. As itstands there is a regents meeting comming up, and it will likely be discussed there. He can't exactly say Brandon is getting fired right now, not until after they've discussed it.
thefact that he hasn't said anything definitive about Dave Brandon is good news to me.

"Automatic E-Mail Response from Schlissel"
This way everyone can see it, and hopefully no one else posts their automatic response.
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:41 AM ^
I am a lot more comfortable with this response than I am Brandon's personal response that was addressed in an earlier thread.
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:42 AM ^
Schlissel is the only one on campus who's willing to accept responsbility, admit mistakes were made, apologize, and pledge to make improvements. He's not taking anyone's side and he's not pointing fingers. And people want to criticize him for not individually replying to the hundreds of emails he's probably received on this issue?

I agree with you. This blog might explode if there is not a firing this week, but for me its settling that he is willing to look into the problems and see what appropriate action is. Firing a high profile guy should not be a quick trigger reaction. The next couple months will be very telling to me where this institution stands with the Athletic Department. I never understood the Brandon hate prior to the season.. It wasn't until this incident that i decided to dig look into him a bit more and find that he should not be AD here.. maybe schlissel needs that time to put the peices together.
October 3rd, 2014 at 8:57 AM ^
I received the same exact response. I knew it was a canned response but it would have been nice if he at least responded to each e-mails direct issue. Some e-mails focused on the Morris injury, some focused on Brandon's mismanagement of the concussion and putting Hoke out there without info for his presser, etc.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:05 AM ^
He couldn't possibly do that. He probably gets many, many e-mail concerns/complaints daily even when the football team is doing well. He can't spend everyday personally responding. He has a very large and complex university system to run.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:09 AM ^
You ever read "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"? This is upper right quadrant stuff. An important topic, but he definitely shouldn't have any urgency in personally responding to 20,000 e-mails.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:20 AM ^
If you think its possible for him to respond to the nuances of each email, you are living in fantasy land.

Each of the over 11,000 people on the petition to remove Brandon ought to send Schlissel an email...bet that message would get across.
