2010 Scholarship Breakdown
Here is a breakdown of the scholarships available for 2010
QB: 1 (assuming Cone does not get a 5th Year)
RB: 2
FB: 1
WR: 2
Slot: 0
TE: 0
OL: 3
DL: 2 (assuming Patterson does not get a 5th Year)
LB: 1
CB: 1 (hoping I'm wrong about Warren leaving)
P/K: 2 (assuming Wright does not get a 5th Year)
Subtotal: 15
Players Who Left the Team: 7 (Helmuth, Evans, Wermer, O'Neill, Feagin, Clemons, Cissoko)
TOTAL: 22 Scholarships Available
So it looks like RR will be trying to sign close to a full class in 2010. I believe the B10 limits 25 scholarships per recruiting class so that is probably the number RR is targeting.

Wouldn't we get Steve Threet's scholarship back next year too? I could be wrong here ...

I think we would get that one back. I'm pretty sure Michigan will have at least 25 scholarships available for 2010

RR said in one of his press conferences that they will have a full class of 25 this year
Edit: RR said this during his Monday press conference

does this assume that Witty would be back in the mix? I hope a lot of these kids enroll early.

Witty is hoping to enroll in January, so he will be able to be there for spring ball (I assume eligible?).

Thanks, that's good news.

Don't forget about Sheridan, Ferrara, Banks, Patterson, and Dorrestein as possibly not coming back for 5th years. Moundros would be questionable and I would have to believe that Schilling and Obi will definitely be back.

I included Patterson as being gone. The other players you mentions are all on the 2-deep at positions where depth is thin so I think RR will bring all of them back.
October 28th, 2009 at 6:07 PM ^
where else would they go? they are both redshirt juniors.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:15 PM ^
Isn't Dorrestein starting right now? Can't count him out. I know that his playing time is due to Molk's injury, but still.

Warren leaving would be awful, but I don't think he does if he isn't a 1st round pick. Why would anyone bypass another year to develop to get taken in the 3rd round? I guess injury concerns and getting guaranteed money, but man he could go higher after his senior season.

Renegotiations with the CBA might restrict the amount of money that can be given to drafted players. As far as I understand it, there would be maximums like in the NHL for entry level deals.
If these are passed in the new CBA, then this will be the last year of ludicrous amounts of money in the draft. Even if you're not a 1st round pick, its certainly something to consider.

performing like a lock 1st rounder. He needs to come back for his Sr season.
Whether he does is a different story.

I think there is more at play with decisions to go pro early. Yes, you'd want to be a first or second round pick--but right now Warren is the #2 CB according to Mel Kiper's hair. If that's still the thinking at the end of the season, well, NFL teams do love good cornerbacks, and being thought of as the second-best CB in the draft if he came out would probably get him into the higher rounds and also mean lots of money.
If the right team comes up with a need at cornerback--Warren would get drafted. I'd go if I were him.

Warren would be someone I would list under the "cant afford to lose" title. If we can keep him for his last year, it would give them time to develop a couple of the young DB's and have another recruiting cycle to find a good one. Please stay!
