Legend lockers, Big House cell reception
I just returned from accompanying the preschoolers in my program on our annual outing to the Big House, and observed a few new developments.
The first has to do with the Legend lockers. The names and years of all players who have worn the number are now listed beneath the Legend plaque.
In other news, both AT&T and Verizon are working in the stadium installing cells. It looked like a major installation.
I still hope they don't give a guy a legend number every year just because.
11 and 21 are currently unlabeled, so there are no current players scheduled to wear those numbers. That could change, but we'll see. BTW, one of the fellows giving the tour said that his money was on Freddy Canteen as the next one to wear 21. He also said that the one living Wistert brother has input re: who wears 11.
I wonder what Hoke would do if Canteen turned down #21 because he wanted the #1.
Oh good, now students will start showing up on time.
I believe BlueBarron was referring to the fact that Dave Brandon has stated that the decline in student attendance is due to poor cell reception.
in bringing in millions of dollars to the UM AD, then it's either no good, someone else's fault or irrelevant. Believe he is not leveraging the cell phone industry properly.
Wouldn't be surprised if there's wifi being installed as well. Yay?
Good for the people who need to check scores and whatnot. I'm glad I can disconnect for 3-4 hours for a game.
It seems like a lost art (for lack of a better term)
who grew up with cell phones and Internet widely available for his entire life. Lost art? It used to be called life.
I didn't get my first cell phone until I was 14 and I didn't have internet access until 2008.
Not my entire life.
Man I must be older than 31. I didn't get or even ask for a cell phone til I was 18 or 19. And by that point it was my money my decision to get one. My kids will not be getting cell phones at 14. 16, we can talk, but it'll be their money paying for it.
I'm 31 as well and my parents got my frist cell phone for me when I was 16. It made calls and that was its only feature. I was driving and they wanted me to be able to call if there was an emergency. Pretty good idea I thought. I bet that phone cost them $15 a month tops.
Your kids will be on you like flies starting in 2nd or 3d grade. Going to Middle School was the "Dad I need a cell phone because everyone else has one and I am being left out" point for all three of my kids.
One is already 2nd grade and hasn't asked yet. Our kids' most advanced technology they're allowed to use is the Wii. I prefer letting them use imaginations and going outside. It's good for them.
I had a Prodigy account when I was 11 years old and even then, most of the forums were strewn with images that my parents would have rather not crossed paths with my retinas, so in this respect perhaps few things have changed - merely the speed and sophistication of the platform. Well, also the egregious download and access fees and the Hayes 4800 baud modem too. Those were pretty interesting limitations. Broadband was a godsend went some new fangled company called Comcast brought it to the street in late 1996. As for cell phones, I had my first one in 2000.
I had an Atari 1040 (color of course) that I bought with paper route money 85-86. We used a modem to connect to a BBS' and I downloaded a fantastic game called Time Bandits for free off of the older brother of my friend. My friend and I were also able to get images of the ladies from a strip poker game.
That was a good summer...
and damn proud of it.
Pong anyone?
Ditto, Prodigy was great at 11 years old!!
And the fjords of Norway. (Nudge Nudge; Wink Wink!)
Errr . . . PARTIALLY Different!
I'm glad that the administration is so in touch with the youths these days. Cell reception (and maybe the hippity hoppity music) will get them back in the Big House. If only it had a roof we could light on fire so that the kids would do that "hands in the air" thing.
It's not going to make or break my Michigan game day experience but it's a definite improvement as well as something that has caused me a decent amount of frustration in the past.
Everyone is happy to have it, but they're being snarky about it b/c Dave Brandon talked about it being his top priority for improving the game day experience despite the fact that, when polled, students put it very low on their list of priorities.
Yet those same students don't give a shit about loud music being piped in, but it doesn't stop everyone from acting like having it is worse than Brandon banging their mom and sister.
because that's the tone set by the folks running this site, who appear to have two guiding principles:
1. Snark passes for intelligent analysis.
2. Brandon is evil
I think a person can disagree with DB's view of a good game day experience, though, without seeing him as a chartoon character. FWIW, I think DB's done a lot of good things, but I think his goal of every Michigan game being a mini-Super Bowl is a misunderstanding of what makes college football great.
I resent that statement, very much. Some people are capable of forming their own opinions. I could give two shits what Brian thinks of DB, I have my own working brain with which to make judgements based on facts and stuff.
That's what Brian told me to say too.
Can you hear me grumbling over here? Gnashing my teeth?
Love you, Timmmaay.
It's not "snark passing for intelligent analysis" to point out that Brandon stated Wi-Fi is important to the students' game day experience when the student's poll showed it was the very least important thing to their gameday experience.
I recall initiating the no phone ringing at my home during M football games. Admittedly, this was in the pre-cell world. Also the last of the group to purchase one of those fuckers; damn, they take the fun right out of a night on the town. Just can't imagine why a phone call to lie to the wife can't wait until after the game. And then to set in bars and watch people of both sexes with necks hung anywhere between a 45 and 90 degree angle setting there exercising their fingers txting people they exchange info with all week seems a bit of a contradiction for going to the bar in the first place. Fuck em. Fuck em all I say.
If one carefully reads their Merriam-Webster, they can easily read the no.2 definition under phone call, consisting of one word: Interruption.
Fuck em. Fuck em all I say. But whomever stated Verizon sucks venison dick is spot phucking on.
Hm...
Id be first to admit it wasnt classy at all.
Our tailgate neighbors offered us drinks before we went in after we were feeling pretty good at the time. I didnt take them up on the offer but I guess she did. There was no way i would find her and if i left the stadium thinking she went back to the car i couldnt reenter. Really thats what i was hoping for.
I also left of some details to make it seem better than it was.
I hope they get wifi so I can use the WatchESPN app to SEE SOME FREAKING REPLAYS ARGHHHH
I will only use wi-fi to check up on the Slippery Rock score. One or two updates per game is not enough!
You just know that once wifi is installed the first time someone's WatchESPN app begins buffering they will scream like they were stuck with a knife. It will NEVER be good enough to satisfy some people.
I'll just be happy if my phone battery lasts longer than the first quarter in case I want to take a picture.
If they're installing a DAS system shared by VZW & AT&T (which is what is normally installed) then no. That would only help your 4G service from those two carriers. If they are installing wi-fi, then you could use it for data transfer, but your cell coverage won't be enhanced.
could help Sprint coverage. Unless they've actually gone through with even a few of the upgrades they've been promising for the past 5 years. Swore I'd never pay for Verizon. 3 years of dropped calls, numerous employees and customers bitching, and empty Sprint promises later I went over. Never regretted it once.
