MBB v Illinois BTT Open Thread
I only started one other MBB game thread this year and it was for Illinois and that one turned out well. Hopefully twice is still a charm.

Horford isn't as quick as Morgan, so if he gets caught out there the recovery isn't going to happen as fast. It may be worth backing off on the hedges a bit when he's out there, just IMHO.

Egwu is eating Horford up.

3pt % coming back to earth from the last meeting, which is to be expected. Gotta keep attacking the basket. Stauskas is penetrating but everyone else a bit passive so far.

low scoring game. We've missed a couple of open jumpers.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:21 PM ^
That one line up that was in just before the contact lens issue seemed pretty disjointed.

Illinois benefitting from having a game under their belts already. We look a little tight.

Can only watch on gamecast, with watchespn not working. Why is Illinois getting a ton of layups? Bad on ball defense? Transition?
March 14th, 2014 at 12:27 PM ^
To me, it looks like they keep running right past our defense. A few times they've just gone around the defenders right to the rim. This is disconcerting.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:27 PM ^
I was going to ask the same thing. All of Illinois's shots are at the rim...why so many layups?
March 14th, 2014 at 12:29 PM ^
Slow feet on D. We are not awake yet. Dead atmosphere.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:42 PM ^
or think a vanquished opponent's gonna come back the same.
If they didn't strategize they wouldn't be in this conference.
If anything, we should treat 'em like they been vaccinated. Gonna come harder, change up their game.
I think we've been startled awake now -- damn was that alarm buzzer loud -- hopefully adrenaline keeps pumping. If so , shouldn't have any trouble winning.

We seem to be afraid of their terrible 3-ball, so they fake it then duck under and drive. The refs aren't calling much, but we're still playing defense like we're afraid to foul.

watchespn started working for me around the 11minute mark.
Why oh why do we let ballhandlers knife right ot the bucket... how many layups have we given up in a half court set so far...

tighten up the d
March 14th, 2014 at 12:27 PM ^
we literally can not stop dribble penetration, giving easy points to bad offenses is how you lose games you shouldn't in the tourney.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:27 PM ^
Morgan gets slapped and hacked more than anyone and NEVER gets a call.

March 14th, 2014 at 12:27 PM ^
To Illinois credit they are attacking inside relentlessly which is where we are weak.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:27 PM ^
Three of the team just standing around in the lane and no one stepped out to stop that lay up. I know it shouldn't surprise me anymore, but dang.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:27 PM ^
Kind of a slow game. M is getting owned off the dribble right now, though.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:30 PM ^
Our shots need to fall because we are not winning anything with our D.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:28 PM ^
Caris has missed a few short floaters or this game would look differently. Playing about average on offense, but giving up too many easy drives on defense.

past tense?
Game still on!
it ain't over till the *very* last second -- don forget Kansas in the tourney last year!

*this* is when tourney teams are forged...
March 14th, 2014 at 12:29 PM ^
For all the bad D if he hit those open 3's we'd be up by few possessions.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:29 PM ^
We're playing great. No one should be complaining.
Beilein is clearly going to get quirky tournament lineup to save legs. Stauskas and Morgan were out early with no foul. He's basically using Irvin to rest the legs of GRIII, LeVert AND Stauskas.
I'm not looking for a game anywhere close to the game a couple weeks ago. Basically I'm just looking for some execution and for us to make that 10-0 run when we can and hold it throughout the game.

I find it funny that Burke could get tackled on a drive to teh hoop and never get the call and Nik (almost) always gets the call.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:36 PM ^
Yeah, it's like they thought Burke is so tough he does not need any help.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:32 PM ^
Wish he would've passed that or gone up stronger, but the foul might pay off later.
March 14th, 2014 at 12:34 PM ^
too great.
Feel fairly confident about today's game, and while I agree that rest at this point would be ideal, late March holding more potential jewels, still...
I don't think we can afford to slack, take for granted, or give up this game. Would not look good.
They're gonna come out roaring, seeking revenge & a chance -- it's last gasp survival for them -- we have to be ready to fight.
It's also a good chance to firm up on D. before full-on Tournament Madness.
