Wink Martindale - DC candidate ?

This seems like a terrible option and indicative of a program out of ideas... A guy two decades removed from the college game thrown into the current NIL /transfer world???

"A program out of ideas." You mean media out of ideas. We have no idea what's going on inside the program, and a reporter on 24/7 isn't representative of the program, or its ideas.

There are a LOT of you guys who haven't watched the Giants D the last two years...

And spare me the Vandy comparison where there is no salary cap, no draft and no comparison in terms of relative competition.

You only have five defensive coaches that can recruit off campus, so him not recruiting isn’t really an option. I would still think this is a decent choice. Find some young guy who is a great recruiter that would want to spend the next two years under his tutelage to be groomed to be the DC in 2026.

I like it better than just promoting Clink so he won’t leave.

I mean I’d definitely like to keep Clink but I don’t know that making him DC just so he doesn’t leave is the best move. If he’s the best guy for the job he’s the best guy for the job.

But the literal architect of our defensive scheme is probably more qualified than a position coach.

I’m a huge fan of the Ravens system but I do wonder at this point if we’re limiting ourselves unnecessarily by sticking to the Ravens only tree.

Especially with so many of the Ravens guys are getting NFL DC jobs.

I think you're missing it. We're looking anywhere we have an in, because we aren't plugged into enough guys or places... The illusion of Michigan's football reach has been a huge issue since the Lloyd carr retirement days. The university is second to none in investment, prestige, etc... But for whatever reason the football program seems stiff, dated and dysfunctional. Warde? Maybe seems systemic

I don’t think any of this is true.

Sherrone Moore doesn’t have the network of Harbaugh but I don’t think it’s accurate to say he’s not plugged into enough places.  He hasn’t even hired a DC yet to know where he’s going with the job.

I do think that we are looking for someone who knows the defensive system, but the problem is with Minter leaving and MacDonald going to Seattle, three of the existing Ravens assistants have gotten DC jobs in the NFL.  And MacDonald is probably going to hire one to for Seattle.  So at best we get the 5th best available DC on the Ravens tree, and that’s if that person is even interested.

If it’s Joe Cullen he would bring Sterling Lucas with him. Cullen would coach defensive line and Lucas would coach linebackers. Have to wait and see if Cullen gets an NFL offer. If it’s Wink, they’ll try to bump Clinks pay and keep him as CO-DC and let him learn more under Wink for a year or two. Moore respects Clink but wants an established play caller on defense now that a lot of the staff has left. Cullen + Lucas + Clink would be absolutely ideal at this point. Lucas is the kind of recruiter people thought Partridge was and he’s been a part of elite defenses. He’s also a very good coach. He’ll be a DC within 3 years most likely.

No idea if they can keep Clink if they bring in Cullen and Lucas but that would be a solid start to the defensive staff. If Cullen is brought in quickly you can likely keep the defense together still. Rod and Paige have no plans of going anywhere and will do their best to keep the defense together. Grant and Graham plan to head off to the NFL after this season, so if it’s Cullen they will stick around. Cullen is highly regarded in the NFL and considered one of the best line coaches in football.

Unfortunately Michigan needs to wait on some more hirings at the NFL level before they will announce hirings. Graham has already been offered the world by Bama and Courtney Morgan. Michigan needs to try and get this taken care of relatively soon.

I believe it was Jordan stack or strack? Not sure. Sounds like he was a journalist that posted there is turmoil/low energy at Michigan and that people are calling for Warde inside now? Additionally, Todd Anson has gone on and said that all this would have been resolved had Michigan not dragged their feet with Harbaugh and the contract. Any insight if you heard either of these claims?

He’s hitched his wagon to DeBoer and believes he has a few championships in him. If something happens at Bama and DeBoer ends up being terminated there is always a possibility. But I think it’s a very slim chance. He respects Moore for sure, but if he were to willingly leave DeBoer it would likely be back to the west coast.

If Martindale and Cullen are so great, why didn't Jim Harbaugh go after them instead of Michigan's defensive coaches?

This has a feel of closing time at the bar desperation . . .

Jim can be a tough dude to work for. Established NFL guys don’t have to work with someone they don’t want to. Jim knows he and Minter work well together and Minter is on the rise. Jim didn’t need a DC, because he had Minter and they have a great relationship. Had Minter stayed or went elsewhere Jim could have reached out to Cullen.

Did somebody say closing time?  Met my wife almost exactly 31 years ago at 2:30 a.m. at the Chatterbox.   Although I was completely beer-goggled at the time, turns out she was and still is a 9. I can adapt to the NIL world.   Finally, I can give back to my university in a meaningful way!   Sherone, I am on my way buddy! The calvary is coming! Jagerbombs for everyone! Tonight we ride!!!! Now let's go get that DC!

He doesn't call plays like they do...he just runs the same system.

He blitzes MUCH more and doesn't disguise it like they do. It's not about schemes and mismatches like it is for Minter and MacDonald.

It's about bringing more numbers than you can block and knowing where your hot reads are.

What do you do against teams that don't huddle? Just keep blitzing?

Fuck no.

I'm a Ravens fan, he calls cover 0 waaay too much, he never makes adjustments, and he wouldn't be a strong recruiter and he'd struggle to adapt to the pace of the college game.

Absolutely not.

Not to mentioned he was basically the cause of a mini mutiny with the Giants...playing the role of "players coach" whenever players had issues with the head coach.

I'll take 2 naked laps through a Wendy's drive thru before I think Martindale is a good DC for Michigan.

We are being mocked on rival message boards.  We look pathetic.

Oh no! How will I enjoy Michigan being defending national champions when rivals are mocking us because all our coaches are so good that they keep getting promoted?

That’s like a company being upset because they’re at full production and are sold out of inventory because they can’t meet demand

Our problems are the result of success. Our rivals’ problems are the result of failure. One rival, in particular, faces the prospect of the entire staff getting fired if they lose a certain game next year. Have fun dealing with that pressure.
