OutKick: Jim Harbaugh/Chargers Negotiations Past Salary Stage
Article says salary <$18M/year reported by some sources.

I think the main “environmental” benefit of LA / SoCal may be the anonymity it offers JH and his family. Might be a little tired of being the main storyline when not on his terms.

Fires, earthquakes, and long term water shortages suddenly make cold winters not so bad.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:09 PM ^
aren't there rolling blackouts?
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:16 PM ^
Hell is rainy? TIL!
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:27 PM ^
Yesterday was pretty nasty with flooding on quite a few roadways, but aside from heavy fog this morning today has been pretty beautiful.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:49 PM ^
All this Love shit - mostly from JUB - is BS. Harbaugh is a competitor first and foremost. The NFL is way more competitive than college. He simply wants to win at the highest level. Why is it complicated?
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:58 PM ^
If all this comes to pass, I think there should be a moratorium on posts from insiders. Seriously.
January 23rd, 2024 at 9:07 PM ^
The NFL is childs play. Imagine not being able to draft in the first round ever while your rivals share all the first round picks with 2-3 other teams. Now that is a challenge.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:29 PM ^
Less than $18M is a pretty big range.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:29 PM ^
the pedantic hero we all need
I had the same reaction
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:30 PM ^
I too recently received a job offer for <$18M/year
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:32 PM ^
Hopefully your offer was just "< $18M", and not "<<<<<<<<<<<<< $ 18M".
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:34 PM ^
It really sucks when they make an offer that requires you to pay them.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:37 PM ^
I think they call that an internship
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:41 PM ^
"We are offering you an internship opportunity. It pays <$18M per year."
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:40 PM ^
I would like to make the bonus from an $18M contract
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:36 PM ^
lol I guess my and Jim are in the same income bracket now.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:39 PM ^
"Less than the $18M/year reported elsewhere" did make me wonder how much less.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:29 PM ^
I wished there was a place in this world for me where being offered 18 mil/year WASN’T the biggest part of the negotiation
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:31 PM ^
Jim giving the Michigan fanbase a lesson on emotional attachment theory.
Godspeed Coach Harbaugh! May you achieve the glory you deserve.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:31 PM ^
Michigan should announce Moore as head coach right now. Enough of this bullshit game JH wants to play.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:36 PM ^
He’s not really playing a game, he’s been very focused on getting an NFL job.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:41 PM ^
Think I would have just prefer he “retire” after the game if he was so intent on doing something else. Either way is awkward but can’t say I would welcome him back with open arms for the inevitable talk of a second go around some day.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:57 PM ^
He’s literally done this each of the past two seasons. He also won Michigan a national championship. It is annoying? Sure. But no one can argue with his results. He’s earned that leverage.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:04 PM ^
Personally I would have viewed a retirement announcement followed quickly by taking interviews with NFL teams as an insult to the program.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:42 PM ^
Yeah I'm feeling like emotional overreaction may not be the best way to go about hiring a coach.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:42 PM ^
What bullshit game is he playing? He's clearly focused on landing a NFL job.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:42 PM ^
I hope he doesn't regret it. I get his wanting to Superbowl it up again, but in an alternate world where he stays at Michigan, lives next door to his parents in Ann Arbor, retires as top 5 coach in college football history, cements the legacy of Michigan football, helps push for players to get paid and share revenue, maybe win a few more B1G titles and another national championship...man....that's tough to top, even if you win the LA Chargers a SuperBowl, which, ok i guess. Im not an NFL guy so maybe i just "don't get it" but, it doesn't seem like that will prove anything of value that Jim couldn't get 10-fold in A2.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:51 PM ^
Being paid $18M a year to live by the beach in a cool city with great weather and run a talented NFL team might seem like a pretty good option to many.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:55 PM ^
Does it really matter being paid $8M/year or $18M/year at this point for him? Plus, how long would he likely last as an NFL coach again versus at Michigan?
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:06 PM ^
Riddle me this if someone offered you $8M or $18M…which one are you taking? This argument has always been silly to me. I would much rather have $10M for my family than not.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:10 PM ^
You are right! Eight million is clearly not enough for a family.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:19 PM ^
Two counter points:
1) He's already a multimillionaire (Google indicates a minimum of ~ $35M net worth). How much more does someone need to be happy (or to raise a family)? At some point more money is nothing but bragging rights unless you want to ridiculously splurge. (There is a separate discussion that could be had about *social conscious* considerations... people having net worth of 7-8 figures while simultaneously living within walking distance of those who are destitute, hungry and homeless - but we won't delve into that now.)
2) Cost of living difference between SE MI a d LA is not trivial. Those headline figures you cite change significantly by the time one spends the money... and the end result is not *that* different between the two. (Also how *long* would that higher salary actually last compared how long the lower salary could last? He could probably coach the rest of his working days here... but he would probably be lucky to get 4 years in LA.)
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:47 PM ^
18MM a year in Cali is probably closer to 8MM after taxes.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:57 PM ^
I really don’t mind if he regrets it. That being said regret IS probably the motivation for his action … regretting not going back to the NFL for a last shot. Odds are he will fail but probably 20% chance makes an AFC champ game somewhere next 5 years he will get there (at least).
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:33 PM ^
He could also win a Super Bowl and still be fired in the next 3-5 years afterwards. Look at all the NFL openings this year and other coaches that were presumed out of a job that are on their last leg this year.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:49 PM ^
Careful I got downvoted for saying that in another post
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:08 PM ^
You likely got down voted for saying because you said it in a childish way.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:32 PM ^
The man is the first Michigan football coach in 75 years to win an outright National Championship. He can play any game he wants.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:31 PM ^
Get it over with already.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:31 PM ^
is outkick even a valid site for news? they got clayton bigsby providing their coverage?
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:41 PM ^
I mean, I've never seen Clayton Bigsby and Jason Whitlock in the same room, but to be fair, neither has Bigsby.

"So this is a marriage whose wedding has definitely begun."
Wait until they get to the "speak now or forever hold your peace" part!
"No, you can't have him! He is OUR coach! We love him more!! You will never love him as much as we do. WE ARE PREGNANT WITH HIS BABY!!!"
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:40 PM ^
Can't help myself...and I'm gonna piss on a Michigan icon...gonna get Negged from here to eternity...but...
It didn't work for Bridget Moynahan. Won't work for us.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:47 PM ^
It certainly could be a marriage whose wedding has begun if we're using The Bachelor(ette) as the point of reference

Jim, Warde cabled you need cash, stop.
Stephen Ross’s office instructed to advance you up to twenty-five million dollars, stop.

Whatever Ross was going to put up should go to an NIL collective so we can start firing that money cannon everyone said existed.
