Random thoughts-Friday Open Thread

Sweetest M hat I've seen in years sells out in seconds.

Hoops so sad their latest game can't be found on MGoBlog (I know we're all riding a football high.) I'm in the Juwan must go crowd now.

Your random Friday observations below the jump.

Michigan football - One of the great teams of all time. I Hope Coach Harbaugh stays, we could build a juggernaut if he does. I can see JJ returning, he's really enjoying his time here, especially if Coach Harbs stays.

Men's basketball - Sadly, I've tuned out. How can we lose so many one point games? We have to be close...Juwan needs to make adjustments. He knows basketball, he needs to think outside the box.

Lions - LFG! I can see the Cowboys and Eagles both losing tomorrow, neither one of them looks like worldbeaters on the road. Regardless, I'm really looking forward to the playoffs.

The thing that's really bad for the hoops program is that many folks like me aren't even mad any more.  We're now apathetic towards the program, which is even worse.  I didn't watch one second of last night's debacle and probably won't watch the rest of the year.  This is as bad as that program has been since the Ellerbe era, and I never thought we'd ever be that bad again!

It's really amazing to think back a little less than three years to March 29, 2021. Basketball was about to play UCLA as a heavy favorite to make the Final Four and football had just gone 2-4 and people were posting soup cans all over twitter in the hopes that Michigan would not bring Harbaugh back. Hell of a 180 for both teams.

This is my last season watching football closely and I'm beyond overjoyed with how far this team has come.

Extremely grateful to Harbaugh, Santa, and Team 144.

This team is special and it's the perfect season to go out on. If we win a natty or not, this is possibly the best season of Michigan football I'll see in my lifetime. A great and glorious magnum opus.

Random observation: I was at the Red Wings @ Kings game last night, it was A LOT of fun.  Great comeback win for the Red Wings.

There were quite a few folks wearing Michigan gear there, I'm guessing a few folks stayed in town a few extra days.

This post reminded me to finally by that Detroit Tigers 2023 All-Star game hat I've had my eye on. Too bad this one is sold out though - sweet looking hat.

1. If the tomato is a fruit, ketchup is the jam.

2. I like Fla-Vor-Ices after they've been out of the freezer for about 10 minutes so they are a little slushier. I stress eat them during M games. Green is my favorite.

Calm before the storm. This season has been amazing--but I have to admit the Signgate crap got to me and the effect lingered longer than it should have. But I have never lost faith in this team of veteran leaders and best--the finest Michigan football squad in my 50+ years as a Michigan fan. Even when we trailed Bama late in the 4th quarter I stayed calm and leaned into my belief that this team can overcome anything.

Obviously nothing is guaranteed on Monday evening and we've all experienced too many Michigan football disappointments to think that we couldn't lose. But as I gear up to leave for Houston on Sunday and experience the greatest moments of my Michigan fan career I remain steadfastly optimistic and even joyful (hearkening back to Brian's season preview).

We got this and I'm all in with my cotton pickin' Maize and Blue heart. Go Blue!

My dad showed up to my house this week in a mint condition 1997 big ten championship hat with a rose on it and no advertising.  He said I bought for him for Christmas that year.  I almost stole it from him.

I had a very nice 1997 National Champ sweatshirt.  My wife entered a 25k race several years later.  It was a bit cold to start the day, so she chose my sweatshirt out of my closet to wear that morning to start the race, and then DISCARD it a mile or two into the race.   She seemed bewildered at my reaction when I found out.

“Fire Howard” is going to become the new “Fire Beilein/Bakich” joke. In a few years, we’ll be looking back and laughing about it.

I want Juwan Howard to succeed so I hope you're right.

Most basketball games are decided by a few plays. After the loss to Villanova in the 2022 NCAAT Sweet 16, Juwan Howard's Michigan has struggled with winning close games.

We're not far off from being a winning program but he must figure out why his teams are having trouble finishing off teams regardless of venue.

What are some schematic ways to get to/disrupt penix? He gets rid of the ball so quick that I don’t know if blitzing and the dline will work like it did against bama?

1.  Juwan should go, but let's wait for the season to play out.  No reason to pull the trigger now.

2.  The Rose Bowl was one of the most gut-wrenching games to watch ever, and one of the sweetest endings.

3.  I am drinking on Monday night.  Probably a lot.

4.  It's unlikely I'll be reporting to work Tuesday.

5.  Took me a long time to switch from liquid to Tide Pods, but I think they work just as well.

1. Michigan football will take away so much attention on the basketball team.

2. I don’t even enjoy watching these games. I’m so stressed out pacing around the house. Of course the ending is worth it

3. I’m ok with not drinking

4. I’ll feel better Tuesday

5. Pods don’t justify the higher price. I don’t understand laundry commercials where the actress smells her clothes and they don’t smell good because of using cheaper detergent. This isn’t a thing.

I think smaller Christmas trees are the way to go. Easier and quicker to set up and take down. Fit better in more places. You can focus on the special ornaments. Plus I dig the humble, more modest vibe.

Beating Bama in the Rose Bowl was a glorious win in so many ways, it seems like it could be difficult for the team to regain focus for the championship. This isn't a shot at the team, more just looking at the circumstances surrounding the win (cathartic win after a long off period, dream-like scenario in the ultimate setting, etc.). I know this team hasn't overlooked anyone all year and has potentially the best veteran leadership we've ever seen. Do you think it would've been better from a championship focus perspective if we'd beaten Bama in a different setting, like the Peach or Orange Bowl? It seems like winning in a less important setting would lend itself more to quickly moving on to the next game, whereas winning in the Rose Bowl is so significant that it has the potential to produce more of a "hangover."

I live in Seattle and my wife is a Washington Alum and frankly, nobody seems to care about football. It's why I want Michigan to win so badly. I know a boatload of UW alum and I've met maybe a handful who even know who Penix is.

Stats:

Sidenote: Don't even get me started on fair weather Seahawks fans. Not a lot of "12" jerseys on Fridays anymore.
