Beating Bama in the Rose…

Beating Bama in the Rose Bowl was a glorious win in so many ways, it seems like it could be difficult for the team to regain focus for the championship. This isn't a shot at the team, more just looking at the circumstances surrounding the win (cathartic win after a long off period, dream-like scenario in the ultimate setting, etc.). I know this team hasn't overlooked anyone all year and has potentially the best veteran leadership we've ever seen. Do you think it would've been better from a championship focus perspective if we'd beaten Bama in a different setting, like the Peach or Orange Bowl? It seems like winning in a less important setting would lend itself more to quickly moving on to the next game, whereas winning in the Rose Bowl is so significant that it has the potential to produce more of a "hangover."

Completely agree. It feels…

Completely agree. It feels like any random fan could've edited all of those clips together and called it a documentary. Even if they featured a few minutes of Peyton, Charles, and Randy reflecting on that season and their careers afterward, it would've been better.

It would depend on what…

It would depend on what exactly Day hired them to do. If he hired them to investigate UM and they happened to commit crimes in the process without Day's knowledge or approval, I'd say he's probably fine. He'd have to be remarkably stupid to sign a contract or have any written communications that explicitly included committing crimes.

You might want to hyphenate …

You might want to hyphenate "resigns" in the title to say "re-signs." Happy for Mo and glad he isn't retiring!

I guess it's finally safe to…

I guess it's finally safe to say that Oakland is no longer in play.

I think conference…

I think conference realignment is ok for now in large part because regionalism is still a thing. The biggest risk I can see to that would be if the top programs from across the conferences went European Super League, thereby losing regionalism and relegating everyone else to some form of mid-major status. Given how the money works, I feel like this could be only a matter of time. Michigan would obviously make a lot more money playing Texas than Northwestern. We will probably hee and haw about it and mourn the true death of college football as it once was, but when it comes down to it, I think we will prefer to be inside the Super League than outside of it.

If the B1G adds Washington,…

If the B1G adds Washington, Oregon, Stanford, and Cal, I don't think it'd be bad at all for football. In January, it was reported that the B1G is considering an 8-game schedule. So, if you're USC, here's a potential B1G schedule:

- @ Washington (PST)

- Cal at home (PST)

- @ Michigan (EST)

- Stanford at home (PST)

- @ Oregon (PST)

- Iowa at home (PST)

- Penn State at home (PST)

- @ UCLA (PST)

For five of those games, it's a guarantee that they're PST regardless of home/away. Worst-case scenario, two of the other three games are on the road at EST teams. In that way, for football specifically, I don't think the disadvantage would be that big as long as more PST teams are added. (For sports with longer seasons, the disadvantage would obviously increase with the length of the season)

One report I saw mentioned…

One report I saw mentioned that USC and UCLA may have actually approached the B1G and told them "we're either going to you or going elsewhere." If that's the case, the B1G might've felt like it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Plus, if they'd gone to the SEC, that would've created an even bigger power imbalance than we were already bound to see with UT and OU going to the SEC. I think the B1G had to do it.

Honestly, it makes sense to…

Honestly, it makes sense to me. Its stupidity makes it unique enough to be trademarked.

I'm glad you brought up 2016…

I'm glad you brought up 2016. Brutal end to the season, but it had some seriously entertaining moments. Jourdan Lewis's INT against Wisconsin, 49-10 against Penn State, 78-0 at Rutgers, and giving MSU their "Defeat with Dignity", along with three non-con games against teams that ended up being pretty decent. If JT had rightfully been called short, it may have changed a lot with regard to this program.

Can't speak to the parking…

Can't speak to the parking situation or current border situation, but I've flown out of Windsor to go to Europe a handful of times. Super small airport, only a few gates, very limited food options if you're counting on it. I built in some time to get through security and I was at my gate within 10 minutes of walking through the door. Toronto is obviously much larger, but 2.5 hours is more than enough time to grab something to eat and get to your next gate. Sorry I don't have much more to offer than that; I just figured it might help to have an idea of what you're walking into.

I don't think the committee…

I don't think the committee will give us that chance. I think if they win and Ok State wins, they'll let Ok State jump Cincy so UGA can kick the crap out of them.

I would make the argument…

I would make the argument that engagement with constituents is an important part of government. That doesn't have to just be getting their input on bills; it can also be sharing a laugh on social media. In theory, these types of interactions make government officials appear more accessible, which may encourage voters in an indirect way to engage more with the civic process. You can argue that we should spend less on this engagement than basic needs (which I'm sure we do), but this is still a function of government and we should spend at least *some* money on it.

For Penn St., I agree. For…

For Penn St., I agree. For MSU though, I think it would be much easier for him to win the Big XII with Cincy than to win the B1G with MSU. They've already said that the Big XII will remain a Power 5 conference, so if he's looking to make the CFP/compete for championships, Cincy probably gives him the better path.

Not obviously at all. They…

Not obviously at all. They make sense geographically/culturally/academically, sure; but they bring no money to the table and we'd have to split the pie with one more team, giving each team less money. If money is the motivator (and it is), Iowa State is one of the last teams we're looking at.

A "small part of his…

A "small part of his personality" that had a major impact on Willis Ward's life and sent a hateful message to the black community both on campus and across the country. A "small part of his personality" that was supported by university administrators and allowed to be attached to the mantle of the university.

There is no question Yost did many things to contribute to UofM; but don't trivialize his actions as just some quirk. They had a major impact on many people and brought great shame to this university. Instead of giving him a place of unquestioned honor (i.e. having a building named after him), talk about his contributions in a museum where they can be put in context with his other actions.

And thus, the Butt-Cheeseman…

And thus, the Butt-Cheeseman era comes to a close.

I can't keep watching these…

I can't keep watching these. I live in a two-bedroom apartment and we're running dangerously low on walls I can run through.

My point was, there's a…

My point was, there's a bigger difference between NYC and the Meadowlands versus Paris and Saint-Denis. To a visitor, Saint-Denis feels like it's practically another part of Paris, making the match feel like it's in Paris; whereas the Meadowlands are completely separate from NYC, making the match feel like it's outside of NYC. In that way, New Jersey will likely get more of the focus than Saint-Denis did in 1998.

In fairness, Saint-Denis is…

In fairness, Saint-Denis is barely outside of Paris and the Stade de France is a stop in the Paris metro system. If you're staying in Paris, it's no more difficult to get to the match than to get to the Eiffel Tower. You don't get the same connectedness with the Meadowlands and NYC.

Adding onto previous advice

I saw this mentioned in a thread from a few years back. If you don't already have a VPN, UofM offers a free one to all students, faculty, and alumni (http://its.umich.edu/enterprise/wifi-networks/vpn). I was overseas the past football season and that VPN plus my family's cable account let me watch all of the games.

Woke up at 8am

French time. It's gonna be a long day.

Here's the move:

Buy student tickets the week before and get them validated. I just graduated, but both years I went to OSU games, the ticket prices plummeted (as low as $40) the week of The Game because people were going home for Thanksgiving. With a validation sticker, you're looking at roughly $100 a piece, everybody can sit together, and you can sit almost anywhere within the student section (if you're smart). All you have to do is find a student to look on Facebook groups for you.

60 games in the US

60 games in the US, 10 each in Canada and Mexico. It's basically our World Cup. I know it's unlikely with Chicago being so close by, but it'd be nice to get a few games in the Big House!

The slap

in the face is that this idea has already been floated around, was overwhelmingly shot down (https://www.michigandaily.com/section/campus-life/backlash-against-bice…), and yet they're still going through with it. They heard what we had to say and blatantly ignored it. For a day that's supposed to be about us, that doesn't feel right.

Actually

I think he meant Clubber Lang.

I've heard

that all three guys under investigation have been moved out of their dorm and haven't been attending classes. This comes from a friend at MSU who has friends who saw them getting moved out. I know it's hearsay and you can believe it or not; but my friend seems pretty confident that they won't be returning to the football team. Just give it a little more time.

I want to be

a Ligue 1 fan, but the competitive balance is terrible. I spent a semester near Marseille, went to a Marseille-PSG game, and have been trying to follow them ever since. It's just tough to be a fan when the product across the league is generally pretty bad, with the exception of basically the top few teams. Right now, 1st place has 59 points, 2nd has 55, 3rd has 53, and the next closest has 40. Hopefully, under new ownership, Marseille will be able to get back into the ranks of the elite; but the rest of the league seems like a lost cause.

Freedom House

It's an organization in Detroit that provides vital services (housing, legal, job search, ESL, etc.) to people seeking asylum in the U.S. I've worked with them through UofM and I know a lot of other students/alums have as well. HUD recently pulled a major source of their funding, so they can use all the help they can get!

There's always

something magical about the first snow of the year. For myself and many others, this magic was compounded by the fact that it was our last game in the Big House as undergrads. The last four years have held many memories in that stadium, both wonderful and dreadful; but, this game felt like a pretty great ending.

BYU

got in a shootout with Toledo; but MSU was just stonewalled by Indiana's defense. Unless the Hoosiers are having an anomalous year defensively, I'm not entirely convinced MSU's offense will be able to keep up.

In the student section

where I was at, we would sometimes chant "Joe Pa Knew"  instead of "Let's Go Blue". Kinda stupid, but we were amused with ourselves.

Was really hoping

this video was distinctly aimed at our biggest rivals; but the other Knights work too. Great job!

Chris Evans

I loved the story that played out on gameday and the day before. From the Q&A asking about Jordan's first college game, De'veon waking him up and getting him hyped, the picture of him looking in amazement at the Big House as he was walking in, and finally, the big performance that got everyone talking. The progression set him up as an excited, maybe nervous, freshman, and then he went out there and killed it. Can't help but be happy for him.

Phelps

It might be "easier" to win more medals in swimming; but the next closest swimmer (Spitz) doesn't have even half as many as Phelps. To me, that invalidates the argument altogether.

Someone

is FINALLY thinking of Hugh Freeze's children.

Not sure if you've tried this yet,

but you could always look on LinkedIn? I'm pretty sure you can look specifically at Nike employees, filter them out by if they went to UofM, and contact them from there. From personal experience, that can be a great way to find Michigan connections in various companies.

I'm from an hour away as well

and I think Ann Arbor is the perfect distance. It's not so close that my parents are hovering over me, but not so far that I can't come home when I want to. I'd hate to have to road trip or take a plane every time I wanted to see my dog. Plus, I didn't grow up a Michigan fan and had never been to A2 before my senior year of high school, so it still feels like I'm discovering a new city.

Could be a crackhead

that got hold to the wrong stuff! And it told him to get up in the tree and play a wolverine!

My word

Frank looks young in this gif. I'd forgotten how much the presidency has aged him.

Studying Abroad

The school I'm at in France had one week for winter break and is giving us two weeks of spring break before finals. I could probably use both weeks to travel, but instead, I'll use the first one to go to Greece, Portugal, and Germany, and the second one to study.

Could someone explain to me

Could someone explain to me why Pat Fitzgerald didn't get drafted though? If he had that good of a college career, you'd think he might've gotten at least a chance at the next level.

I might be going to the

I might be going to the Marseille-PSG game next week and I'll bring my Michigan flag!

You took that straight from

You took that straight from the tweet's responses...and I'd still upvote you if I had the required points. Great line.
