Well, as an engineer, we were very self-aware that we were in the most challenging undergrad program. Therefore, any other degree: doctor, lawyer, MBA could have been ours had we so desired.  (Well, maybe not art school. They always seemed a bit...different.)

So, yeah, not a lawyer. Definitely could have easily been.

Edit: No offense against the art school. Just a left-brain, right-brain thing. Dated a girl in art school. Opposites indeed attracted,

Good point. And correct.

You remind me of an old line from Cheers, where Sam and Diane are talking with a counselor who says they can't work out as a couple:

Diane: What about the theory that opposites attract?

Counselor: The only thing opposites attract is divorce.

Not categorically true, of course.

So Lawyers are popular now?

Smarmy article 60 to 40 narrative weighted with a "how dare they defend themselves" lack of self awareness to all precedent and due process in CFB governance. Summary judgement much?

The battle between in person and impermissible schemes and their "institutional" representatives will be joined. The source and disseminators of the whirlwind and their motivations yet to be but sure to be pursued.

Yeah, after all the coverage we've gotten from ESPN recently, anything that doesn't make the mistake of including "electronically filming sidelines" as one of the rules CS broke is fine with me.

Seemed like a pretty fair article. Someday, when all of this is over, I look forward to reading an article about how ESPN et al systematically blew this story out of proportion and how Stalions' scheme turned out not to be worth 21 points or 15 players. No one but Michigan fans will read it, but it will be nice to revisit Pete Finebaum completely changing his original opinion to fit with the Harbaugh-hate ESPN narrative.

The article says:

Michigan’s lawyer fans, much like Michigan’s paid lawyers, have obfuscated a great deal to make Michigan’s sign-stealing scheme seem like it’s not a big deal.

Okay, but why is it a big deal? The assumption is that it must be a big deal because people are mad about it, without any analysis as to whether it actually matters outside of lazy "Michigan's record was this before 2021 and is now this 2021 on".

I also found the piece even handed and quite interesting/original compared to a lot of the other stuff out there (though to be fair he has had the benefit of some hindsight writing it now).

What I think I liked about it most was that it focused on how UM (broadly defined to include the fanbase) sees itself as an institution/program rather than through the lens of its conflicts with the B1G, NCAA, OSU, etc. This is important because, frankly, the die has been cast in the court of public opinion and trying to engage with (mostly) clowns online and IRL who have a rooting interest in UM failing is a fools errand. What really matters is how we as a community choose to go forward regrading our own ethos, etc.  since we will always have a money cannon of our choosing to support it financially.

Also nice shout-out as well to mgoblog. I'm coming to appreciate how unique this site is and would actually love a primer on how it is run, business model, etc. at some point.

The SZD guys are not good analysts and are a waste of time, IMO. They’re entertainment writers* cosplaying as people who know college football. Godfrey is actually quite bad at predicting and analyzing the quality of coaches. Go look at his track record, he’s a one sided hack. Johnson is a wannabe Xs and Os guys and piggybacks upon talking points made by people who have coached and played. Krishner is your run of the mill metro desk reporter who’s ended up in the area of CFB and adds nothing to analysis. Just drops in the bucket of bad media.

I get what you're saying but for me there's a certain transparency with the big dogs like Fox and ESPN. They're just advertising vessels and TV is theater. With SZD, they present an image of self righteousness and authenticity that is the highest degree of bullshit. Godfrey's insider-but-an-outsider schtick is insufferable and he's just a jaded wannabe football documentarian. Johnson likes to use jargon to present as former player or someone who was in the coaching sphere but as an ex-player it's pretty easy to tell this guy doesn't know shit from shinola. They always made it a thing to dislike Michigan because UM is "holier-than-thou" but they're most holier-than-thou podcast/CFB media operation I've consumed. Their attempts at being authentic are bullshit and I felt it was always easy to tell when they were just megaphones for agents. People will tell you everything about themselves if you listen to them, and in listening to them I found them all to be bad at analyzing the sport and they came off as assholes.

Brian mentioned recently that MGoBlog is one-of-a-kind because, for whatever reason, other football blogs aren’t bringing in enough revenue to support a full-time staff. Or choose not to. I don’t know.

I’ve been wondering recently whether this model is a threat to outlets like ESPN and SI.

MGoBlog clearly employs more bona fide sportswriters than ESPN.

If this model were to catch on, it would pose a threat to other outlets like ESPN, SI, etc. Perhaps we need to support other (non-B1G) teams’ blogs.

The MGoBusinessModel doesn't seem overtly preoccupied with growth uber alles, so I don't see it would be much of a threat in a practical business sense.

Does it draw their ire? Maybe. Does the comparative quality of MGoOutput present a challenge to the integrity of competing business models? Sure, why not.

People have for sure heard of this site. I always cite my sources, and when I'm like 'I heard this take on a Michigan blog' to a friend, I've had several non-michigan football fans go 'oh you mean mgoblog'?. Not sure how word has spread, but it's out there

Haha. Hope everyone is well! I can only assume OP knows Mallory Rubin and the excessive use of “iconic” - love it! Very unbiased read. Thank you. Hope everyone has an awesome holiday week/weekend and obviously, Let’s go get ‘em Saturday! 〽️ v Everybody! (Idk if that emoji  will show up, but “Michigan be Everybody!)

I generally like Kirshner's analysis but I don't get this obsession with the idea that Michigan is somehow venerating Jim Harbaugh because his players and coaches like him and the University thinks he's getting railroaded by a nascent, extra-judicial investigation that summarily punished him seemingly out of spite.

Michigan deified Bo to a degree but they haven't come close to that since, and a mere 3 years ago the place was ready to throw Harbaugh out after exactly one bad season.  Gods don't get treated like that.

The article is fine but it feels written backwards and this doesn't do a lot to frame this issue as anything more than Michigan being a cult with scant evidence that it's actually the case.
