The Athletic ranks NBA Draft prospects
https://nbadraft.theringer.com/
Jett Howard makes the list at #11
Wing, Jett Howard
Michigan, Freshman
Slick offensive threat who could shine next to a lead playmaker.
SHADES OF
Desmond Bane, Dillon Brooks
This makes him the top draft prospect in the conference by their reckoning. Would be bittersweet to watch him be a one and done when this year already seems largely lost. Probably overly optimistic to hope dad can talk him into staying another season. I think he'll figure it out and be great in the league once he's there.

Or a post complaining about such linking
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:44 PM ^
It's a big enough problem that the mods stickied a HOW TO LINK post. It's not that difficult to do. And if we are the leaders and best, we should all know how to do a linky link in this day and age. Would you not agree?
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:47 PM ^
If I can do it, then it can be done.
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:52 PM ^
You're absolutely right, it's simple and there's no reason anyone can't do it. I simply forgot in between changing tabs to copy/paste the link and then the article text and then type my little piece. I'll take my lumps.
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:57 PM ^
It's the risk you take here starting new board contest. We're a tough group. Zero tolerance for redundant threads, typos and grammatical errors or failure to create links or provide descriptive titles.
January 22nd, 2023 at 8:57 PM ^
No worries. I am not in the business of negging. Leaders and best look for solutions to problems instead of knee jerk negging.
January 22nd, 2023 at 10:07 PM ^
Where’s the fun in that?
January 23rd, 2023 at 9:36 AM ^
Sadly the ability to create hyper-links in a post is not the most difficult programming task of all time although based on our repeated inability to do so one would think it is.
The single most difficult, expensive, cumbersome, time-consuming programing task is apparently giving users the ability to edit their posts once they've hit save. Now some will tell you that this futuristic feature can be found on other sites (some even claim it was right here on MgoBlog back in the day) but dont you believe them. I happen to know that giving users the ability to go back and fix simple errors, like the one in this post, is more challenging than time travel & eternal life put together times two.
It is clearly the Holy Grail of websites like this one.

and its the Ringer NOT The Athletic
January 22nd, 2023 at 10:42 PM ^
Found it on reddit and just copied the title, my bad.
January 23rd, 2023 at 11:50 AM ^
The Athletic had Jett at #16 a week ago, for what it’s worth.
January 22nd, 2023 at 9:51 PM ^
I mean sure, but let's also be frank, 95% of platforms support auto-hotlinking anything in a URL format. I don't get annoyed by people failing to hotlink because I figure they, like me, tend to assume forums, boards, comment boxes, email drafts, etc. will automatically turn it into a hotlink.
January 23rd, 2023 at 6:59 AM ^
I could not agree more. Message boards in 2002 had this figured out. Yet here, we have to know some cumbersome extra step.
January 23rd, 2023 at 7:00 AM ^
Yeah totally our fault for assuming a website should have a default function in 2023.
January 23rd, 2023 at 7:43 AM ^
Their slavish devotion to boat anchor Drupal means nothing ever works quite right (points? marking new posts? jumping to the correct post?)... and you're stuck with a feature set from 2005.
January 23rd, 2023 at 12:32 PM ^
Which is why I always thought the HUEL ad of "your website looks like it was coded in notepad" to be so delicious.
January 23rd, 2023 at 8:53 AM ^
This place still has the double posting problem.
January 23rd, 2023 at 1:31 PM ^
This. It's super easy for a poster to make a link a hyperlink, but half the time they forget or do not know how. Just take the modest complexity out and automate it. It's 2023 fergodsakes.
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:26 PM ^
There are a ton of freshmen on that list! Do all the juniors and seniors in college suck? …or, are they gone because the got drafted as freshmen?
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:31 PM ^
It’s the latter - obviously
January 22nd, 2023 at 9:13 PM ^
No it is actually both. All the "good" NBA potential players leave after their freshman or sophomore year, and what is generally left behind are "good" college players who are juniors and seniors. Exceptions do exist, but this is the current trend.
January 22nd, 2023 at 8:31 PM ^
the latter
but if you want to know why the college game is increasingly hard to watch, there's one of the primary reasons
January 22nd, 2023 at 8:33 PM ^
For sixteen consecutive years, the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft has been a college freshman.
January 22nd, 2023 at 11:54 PM ^
I don’t think Blake Griffin was 16 years ago
January 23rd, 2023 at 6:57 AM ^
Won’t be this year and probably not nearly as often in the future. You may have one college player (a freshman) in the 3-5 range but otherwise it’s international, G League Ignite or OT Elite.
January 23rd, 2023 at 8:34 AM ^
Seems alike NIL would put a serious dent in the quality of the OTE league.
January 23rd, 2023 at 9:50 AM ^
OTE maybe but G League is here to stay as the superior option for the highest level prospects. Pro style, development and coaching, better competition, no NCAA nonsense, etc. and I think NIL will cool down once these boosters get burned enough times. At least on unproven young prospects.
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:27 PM ^
Seems to me that the greatest hope for him to stick around for another year is that it might (should?) make for a much easier transition to the NBA. Maybe that's important to him.
A couple of years ago when my son was looking at high schools (we live in NYC, the public school system here is insane -- choosing a high school is similar to a degree choosing a college) he was excited about one school that put students on a fast track to complete 2 years of college by the time the finished 12th grade. My question to him was "What's the rush?". Seems like a fair question to ask an 18 (19?) year-old Jett Howard when thinking about the NBA.
January 22nd, 2023 at 9:52 PM ^
I agree with your comment.
but as a high school student, I had an opportunity to go through college fast (not as an athlete, but as a student). And I thought that was the best thing for me. My parents, mentors, everyone around me said “what’s the hurry?” But in my mind, I just wanted to finish school. So I did it. Quickly.
and only in older age and hindsight, I see what everyone was telling me. And I tell my family and friends the same now: what’s the hurry? Take your time? Enjoy college, you will never get these years back. It’s just hard to see an older generations perspective, especially when you’re an immature teenager.
January 23rd, 2023 at 9:43 AM ^
he was excited about one school that put students on a fast track to complete 2 years of college by the time the finished 12th grade. My question to him was "What's the rush?"
My answer would have been "it's not about time, it's about money. Specifically, getting 2 years of a college education for free"
Your son sounds like a smart young man
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:30 PM ^
The Howards dont need the money. Its not inconceivable that Juwan gets him to stay considering we could return our entire team next season and make a run at a conference championship, and deep tourney run. Juwan stayed 3 years and made a point of graduating. Its obvious the education component is important to him.
January 22nd, 2023 at 9:23 PM ^
I don't see much development of the talent from this coaching staff. Maybe if he makes some staffing changes...
January 22nd, 2023 at 9:53 PM ^
Franz really didn’t do much in college and isn’t good in the NBA. Solid point!
January 22nd, 2023 at 9:28 PM ^
Agree. He is lucky in that he can afford to wait, mature and bulk up in college before heading to a league full of grown men. But ... it has to be hard playing for your dad. I think it's 50/50 whether he stays or not and I think momma is going to have more to say about it than Juwan.
January 22nd, 2023 at 10:51 PM ^
Agreed, with the belief that if Jett returns is because he's all in on helping his dad put together the most talented roster he can.
January 23rd, 2023 at 9:49 AM ^
While I hope you're right, how often does a projected lottery pick return for another year of college? It doesn't really happen - and probably shouldn't. If you can make a lottery player's salary and have basketball be your full time job, that's a no brainer.
That said, maybe he loves the amount of time he spends with his dad and brother and knows he'll never have the opportunity again! Offensively, Jett has been one of the best true freshman I've seen at UM. Another year getting bigger, stronger, and smarter and he can be All Big Ten level next year.
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:38 PM ^
My hope is that he will want to play in the NCAA tournament like most kids growing up. He’s more than likely not going to play in it this year. He knows he’s going to play in the NBA so the tournament would hopefully be a lure to come back
January 22nd, 2023 at 7:47 PM ^
I would be a little surprised if Jett goes pro.
He does not need the money which will still be there for him. He is invested in Michigan with his family. I don’t think he wants to leave Michigan with this season being his legacy.
It might be different if they won the Big Ten and made a Madness run.
January 22nd, 2023 at 8:02 PM ^
Jett Howard at #11?
I will never understand how the NBA “experts” rate these guys.
Good luck to him. If he’s rated that high, he’s gone.
January 23rd, 2023 at 7:57 AM ^
There are more than a few NBA teams waiting to make him their #1 pick. Many are hoping he falls to them below #11. It gets easier to be a star as you move up the ranks-HS-college-NBA. Jett is going to be a star...an elite talent-whether you know it or not.
January 22nd, 2023 at 8:04 PM ^
Shades of Dillon Brooks??? Am I going insane? Dillon Brooks is an inefficient chucker who plays great defense. How is that Jett Howard in any way?
January 22nd, 2023 at 8:27 PM ^
I was going to say "I assume they meant Desmond Bane", but they listed him too.
January 22nd, 2023 at 9:42 PM ^
He also compared Jaime Jaquez to Kevin McHale. That’s insane.
January 23rd, 2023 at 9:57 AM ^
They were both 31 during their rookie years.
January 22nd, 2023 at 8:19 PM ^
We are currently (5-3) tied for 2nd in the Big Ten, with a young team who will keep improving.
HOW ABOUT WE STOP SAYING THIS YEAR IS LOST.
If this team goes 12-8 in the Big Ten and wins a couple games in the B10 Tourney then they ARE going to make the NCAA tournament.
January 22nd, 2023 at 8:52 PM ^
Fair enough! I became a diehard Michigan fan when RichRod was starting out here and Beilein had yet to bring us out of the darkness. Pessimism goes hand in hand with my fandom lol.
January 22nd, 2023 at 9:27 PM ^
12-8 may not be enough with the anchor of the CMU loss coupled with perceived weakness of the league. Hope they turn things around though big opportunity on Thursday.
January 22nd, 2023 at 10:10 PM ^
We need I think 10 more wins to have a shot at the NCAA Tournament. A win say vs Purdue would be a huge help.
13-7 in the B1G and 2 BTT tournament wins puts us at 21-13. If one of those wins is vs Purdue I think it cancels out the CMU loss. With that I do think we are holding our breath on selection sunday
January 22nd, 2023 at 10:08 PM ^
If this team goes 12-8 in conference play, I'll eat a lemon
