Coaching Staff Changes if Weiss is Fired

Submitted by UMVAFAN on January 18th, 2023 at 8:25 PM

If Weiss is fired after the investigation is complete, should Michigan hire a quarterbacks coach or should Harbaugh assume the responsibilities?

I would opt for the latter, move Sherrone Moore to the Offensive Coordinator role exclusively, shift Grant Newsome from TEs to OL coach, move Jay Harbaugh back to TEs while retaining special teams, and then bring back Chris Partridge as the Safeties coach. Partridge is a great recruiter so would be a huge asset after having so much on field success, and could bring immediate talent at corner from the transplant portal. A true freshman corner who started 9-10 games at Ole Miss just entered the portal and his primary reason for leaving was coaching uncertainty. His name is Davison Igbinosun and he was the number one recruit from New Jersey in 2022, so he definitely is a Partridge guy and would be a strong bet to follow him to Michigan if he joined the coaching staff again. This would be the last key piece to having a complete team next season.

Other thoughts on the staff make up if changes are necessary?

Brandon Streeter formerly at Clemson.

  • While his offense this year wasn't good and was inconsistent, it actually improved from 2021 in his one year at the helm as OC.
  • Stud QB recruiter.
  • Primary recruiter at Clemson for Davis.

Its easy to pass based on his one OC year and with DJs lack of development, but his overall track record and recruiting process are compelling if he can work with Moore and Harbaugh.

Streeter is a guy I immediately thought of because of his connection with Davis. He’d be another guy I wouldn’t mind seeing as QB coach/passing game coordinator and let Moore be the official offensive coordinator. Streeter amd Hart could have input on the passing and running game.

The ability and drive to recruit, and connect with prospects is important.  While UM and other teams' coaches are on the road recruiting right now, Weiss is out of action suspended...

Not sure who should be the QB coach. But, in regards to the OL coach... assuming Moore is promoted to sole OC... is it possible for Moore to be the OC but also OL coach at the same time? Or is that asking for too much workload for Moore?

For real, he has been in the booth for several years now follwong his dads footsteps, and trying as hard as he possibly can to be over-critical of Michigan in order to appear unbiased, all up until this last year. I think this assumption he will be a great head coach has something to do with the similarities to another said coach who also played QB at Michigan, started for multiple NFL teams, and has a coaching career of his own that started coaching QB’s.

What about Soup Campbell? He's been the passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach under Scott Loeffler since 2019. We put out great receiver after great receiver while he was here.

I like where you're going, UMVA, especially with that CB prospect in the Portal.

I kinda like moving Mimi up (Mike Mo's big sis) if possible. No way JH does it IMO.

I think the biggest thing we miss if Weiss needs to go bye-bye is that Madden kid/stats guy thing - that's what i think really needs to get replaced.

The idea of moving Mimi up crossed my mind as well since she seems to be the first person JJ talks to on the sideline, but one year of GA to QB coach is too big a step. The more traditional path would be to spend another year or two as a GA, then get a position coaching job at the G5 or FCS level before moving back up to P5 positional coaching. If she's as good as everyone says she is, she *might* be able to skip the lower-level coaching position OR skip the extra couple years as a GA, but not both. There's a learning curve to everything, and even extremely talented people need to take some time to figure out each level.

Need to bring in someone for the passing game.  In an otherwise awesome offense, the passing game seemed to be simplistic.

I’d bring in someone as a passing game coordinator and qb coach

Feels kinda ghoulish to discuss hypotheticals involving someone losing their job.

I know it doesn't look good. But can we let it play out first?

Weiss getting fired should not result in such a significant coaching reshuffling. My guess if we were to bring in a QB coach / new co-OC would be David Shaw

I don't get this place's obsession with Partridge as a coach.  He was a good recruiter but I was never particularly impressed with the LBers or Safeties when he coached and I think the guys they have there (Jaybaugh and Helow) are doing well.  There are a couple of guys on staff who underwhelm as recruiters so I get wanting to get a crack recruiter on the staff but Partridge doesn't feel like a good enough fit.  I do think putting Moore as OC is the right move.

You can find good coordinators who are also good recruiters - Sherrone Moore is a great example.  I thought the offense was much more coherent this year compared to the end of the Gattis run and in the end I tend to think a good coach can figure out how to recruit better than a good recruiter can figure out how to properly coach and gameplan.

Well, we will need to add someone. I think Weiss is gone. I think Jim showed his hand with the sudden courtship of Fioli. Davis really liked Weiss. With Davis dragging his feet even with Weiss he probably felt the need for a plan B knowing that his odds of getting him will drop.

Am I the only one that sometimes misses the Lloyd Carr era?  Sure we went 8-4 every year and ran "HB Plunge" on 3rd and 8 but Ol' Lloyd was more likely to interview for the National Forensics League than the Vikings and his assistants probably didn't even possess computers.
