I believe someone said it's the same thing Emoni Bates was charges with and he was pled down. May be why Mazi was not suspended. But as Brian noted on twitter, the Mel saga has left me with zero confidence that Warde can actually handle a situation like this well so I am going to assume he probably bungled this one too

i'm not even a lawyer or law enforcement and i know this is common.

everyone in this thread seems to think "omg he got arrested how are we just finding out about it"

well, he didn't get arrested. he was never booked. he was in contact with the AAPD and they filed a report. probably confiscated his firearm. he was then allowed to go home.

the prosecutors decided to take the police report and file charges.

Thing is, I wasn't "excited" about charges for their players, but I know that's how they'd be if the shoe were on the other foot so it doesn't surprise me if they were saying that.

However, I have enjoyed their reaction to it. Everything from citing Michigan players "starting it" by skipping, as if that's a justification for violent assault, to the Zapruder takes that there's another angle exonerating their players and the insane conspiracy theories about Michigan controlling everything from the Big Ten to the police and DA. They've been in a bunker mentality since Nassar, desperate to stick anything they can in order to "what about" Michigan, and I'm enjoying their meltdown, because I enjoy meltdowns from childish, whiny fucks.

As for this situation, I hope now that the incident is out, details that provide context quickly follow, and that appropriate actions are taken, up to dismissal if warranted. And I sure as hell hope the program wasn't suppressing it, because in that case Smith shouldn't be the only dismissal. But, as I said, let's have some details.

Here is the law he purportedly broke:
http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(oqps2k3s3thvf3pa31ivea2x))/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&objectname=mcl-750-227

I did not realize Michigan did not allow weapons outside the home.

"...shall not carry a dagger, dirk, stiletto, a double-edged nonfolding stabbing instrument of any length, or any other dangerous weapon, except a hunting knife adapted and carried as such...
...shall not carry a pistol concealed on or about his or her person, or, whether concealed or otherwise..."

While this topic can get highly political, I'll just toss in that in many states like Texas what he did would be perfectly fine.

It doesn't matter at all that it would be legal in other states. He is from Michigan and lived in Michigan his whole life. This isn't some example of him having a gun after growing up in Texas and not knowing the law.

It will likely get pled down and he's going to get suspended for breaking the law. Or he won't and this fanbase can stop talking shit about the way Dantanio and Izzo handled issues

To save you a click, there's absolutely zero information contained in the article at this time

A huge let down to say the least. Hope it wasn't serious but hard to imagine a felony weapons charge isn't a serious incident

While it certainly is serious, we do have a very recent example of a charge originally classified as a felony was quickly pled down and the athlete quickly went on with his career.

Again, we don't know the circumstances with Mazi, so not sure how exactly comparable this is.

A bunch of politicians in Lansing decide what is or isn't law, and what is or isn't serious.

Now, I ain't saying Mazi didn't get himself into deep shit.  But it would also be a change in direction for the program if they hid something seriously incriminating.  I remember the team going years without a decent LT because Harbaugh promptly kicked one off the team without even a conviction and the other got his knee blown up in a legal-but-super-dirty hit.  Harbaugh also suspended Chris Evans for a season over academic fraud.

Michigan under Harbaugh has been anything but protect the star, punish the 4th-stringer that's the norm in college athletics.  And it's unlikely he's been kept in the dark about this for a month.

I don't know what went down, but there's that.

I'm just trying to provide perspective from another state where there are all kinds of laws against gun possession (by a convicted felon, first offender probationer, during the commission of a crime, etc) that don't serve to criminalize innocuous behavior. It's y'all's state, if that's what Michiganders prefer, so be it.

Shit.

I hope this was a case of having a loaded hand gun in his car without a CCP during a traffic stop and not that he was brandishing it or threatening people.

I'm not an expert, but I'm thinking that you're in the ballpark. I don't think that they would wait to arrest if he was brandishing/threatening. More likely something like what you suggested happened, they confiscated the weapon and proceeded from there. Just my hunch.

I have a CCP and they told us in class that you can transport a weapon without a a CCP but you have to carry the magazine and the weapon in separate places in your vehicle or it could result in a felony weapons charge.

Michigan is an open carry state so you can carry but no part of the weapon can be concealed or you can be charged.

The only way to transport a loaded weapon or have any or all of the weapon concealed is with a CCP.

That was the old Kansas law. But 8 years ago the legislator passed a bill for open carry. If you have a loaded gun on your car seat or carried on your person it is completely legal in Kansas. If you keep it hidden in your glove box or concealed on your person you would need to apply for a concealed carry permit.
