incident occurred 10/7 this year

Clickable version of the story from Detroit News:
Mazi Smith, Michigan defensive lineman, charged with carrying concealed weapon
December 1st, 2022 at 11:26 AM ^
Kentucky is very similar on that to Ohio. I stopped bringing mine with me because I travel a lot and states like Michigan don't care it's legal where you are coming from. We have a lot of people that open carry here too.

Was getting a tire repaired in my town and saw a guy with a gun on his hip. Thought what the hell, this ain't the wild west. Then realized he was a tow truck driver and thought about what wonderful people they meet on the daily.
December 1st, 2022 at 12:05 PM ^
I believe someone said it's the same thing Emoni Bates was charges with and he was pled down. May be why Mazi was not suspended. But as Brian noted on twitter, the Mel saga has left me with zero confidence that Warde can actually handle a situation like this well so I am going to assume he probably bungled this one too

The fact that the incident supposedly happened on 10/7 and literally no details about it came out for 2 months is weird
December 1st, 2022 at 10:58 AM ^
Yeah I don't like that part of it.

Possible there was some kind of incident without arrest and charges would come later if the prosecutor thought they were warranted. Not uncommon (at least here in Georgia).
December 1st, 2022 at 11:55 AM ^
i'm not even a lawyer or law enforcement and i know this is common.
everyone in this thread seems to think "omg he got arrested how are we just finding out about it"
well, he didn't get arrested. he was never booked. he was in contact with the AAPD and they filed a report. probably confiscated his firearm. he was then allowed to go home.
the prosecutors decided to take the police report and file charges.

FWIW, MSU fans on rCFB are saying they've heard rumors of it for a while. I'm surprised I hadn't heard anything
December 1st, 2022 at 12:10 PM ^
I saw some twitter replies when the MSU charges came out that Michigan shouldn't get to excited because something was coming soon for them. Guess this was it.
December 1st, 2022 at 12:31 PM ^
Thing is, I wasn't "excited" about charges for their players, but I know that's how they'd be if the shoe were on the other foot so it doesn't surprise me if they were saying that.
However, I have enjoyed their reaction to it. Everything from citing Michigan players "starting it" by skipping, as if that's a justification for violent assault, to the Zapruder takes that there's another angle exonerating their players and the insane conspiracy theories about Michigan controlling everything from the Big Ten to the police and DA. They've been in a bunker mentality since Nassar, desperate to stick anything they can in order to "what about" Michigan, and I'm enjoying their meltdown, because I enjoy meltdowns from childish, whiny fucks.
As for this situation, I hope now that the incident is out, details that provide context quickly follow, and that appropriate actions are taken, up to dismissal if warranted. And I sure as hell hope the program wasn't suppressing it, because in that case Smith shouldn't be the only dismissal. But, as I said, let's have some details.

Interesting timing for this story.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:12 AM ^
In that it was buried until we beat OSU or that it was revealed just before the playoff announcement and could affect the post-season?
IMHO, a one-game suspension (BTCG) should suffice.
December 1st, 2022 at 10:52 AM ^
So far this is all anyone seems to know. Here's the court record:
https://micourt.courts.michigan.gov/case-search/court/D15/case-details?…
December 1st, 2022 at 11:13 AM ^
Here is the law he purportedly broke:
http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(oqps2k3s3thvf3pa31ivea2x))/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&objectname=mcl-750-227
I did not realize Michigan did not allow weapons outside the home.
"...shall not carry a dagger, dirk, stiletto, a double-edged nonfolding stabbing instrument of any length, or any other dangerous weapon, except a hunting knife adapted and carried as such...
...shall not carry a pistol concealed on or about his or her person, or, whether concealed or otherwise..."
While this topic can get highly political, I'll just toss in that in many states like Texas what he did would be perfectly fine.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:23 AM ^
It doesn't matter at all that it would be legal in other states. He is from Michigan and lived in Michigan his whole life. This isn't some example of him having a gun after growing up in Texas and not knowing the law.
It will likely get pled down and he's going to get suspended for breaking the law. Or he won't and this fanbase can stop talking shit about the way Dantanio and Izzo handled issues
December 1st, 2022 at 11:28 AM ^
This is exactly why I stopped leaving mine in the car on business trips because I never knew what state would consider this a felony while mine didn't.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:39 AM ^
FYI - select your state for laws and reciprocity or other states for their laws in case you travel

I see women out everywhere in Michigan with their stilettos. Why aren't the police doing more to enforce this law!

Mazi. wtf

freep ... eww

To save you a click, there's absolutely zero information contained in the article at this time
A huge let down to say the least. Hope it wasn't serious but hard to imagine a felony weapons charge isn't a serious incident
December 1st, 2022 at 11:02 AM ^
While it certainly is serious, we do have a very recent example of a charge originally classified as a felony was quickly pled down and the athlete quickly went on with his career.
Again, we don't know the circumstances with Mazi, so not sure how exactly comparable this is.

Good info on a likely similar situation.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:14 AM ^
A bunch of politicians in Lansing decide what is or isn't law, and what is or isn't serious.
Now, I ain't saying Mazi didn't get himself into deep shit. But it would also be a change in direction for the program if they hid something seriously incriminating. I remember the team going years without a decent LT because Harbaugh promptly kicked one off the team without even a conviction and the other got his knee blown up in a legal-but-super-dirty hit. Harbaugh also suspended Chris Evans for a season over academic fraud.
Michigan under Harbaugh has been anything but protect the star, punish the 4th-stringer that's the norm in college athletics. And it's unlikely he's been kept in the dark about this for a month.
I don't know what went down, but there's that.
December 1st, 2022 at 12:11 PM ^
Harbaugh didn't suspend Chris Evans, the University kicked him out for a year. I don't disagree with your overall point, but Harbaugh doesn't get credit for that one.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:35 AM ^
If you don't have a license, driving in your car with a loaded firearm is a 5 year felony. Wouldn't exactly call that a serious incident outside of it carrying a large penalty
December 1st, 2022 at 11:50 AM ^
Stupid is what it is. What kind of banana republic is Michigan anyway?
December 1st, 2022 at 11:52 AM ^
Stating the obvious: This isn't the spot to debate gun laws (or any laws, tbh). Not gonna downvote but you've made your view on the matter clear in a couple of comments here.
December 1st, 2022 at 12:08 PM ^
I'm just trying to provide perspective from another state where there are all kinds of laws against gun possession (by a convicted felon, first offender probationer, during the commission of a crime, etc) that don't serve to criminalize innocuous behavior. It's y'all's state, if that's what Michiganders prefer, so be it.
December 1st, 2022 at 4:57 PM ^
There are a lot of legislative compromises in a state that has Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, and the UP 🤷♀️
December 1st, 2022 at 12:08 PM ^
A banana republic I love and lived in for 40 years. One I also would never move back to given the last few years as well.
December 1st, 2022 at 10:53 AM ^
Shit.
I hope this was a case of having a loaded hand gun in his car without a CCP during a traffic stop and not that he was brandishing it or threatening people.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:00 AM ^
I'm not an expert, but I'm thinking that you're in the ballpark. I don't think that they would wait to arrest if he was brandishing/threatening. More likely something like what you suggested happened, they confiscated the weapon and proceeded from there. Just my hunch.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:00 AM ^
That would be a different offense all together.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:03 AM ^
No. I was curious so looked it up. That is exactly would the charge would be in Michigan.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:05 AM ^
wrong
December 1st, 2022 at 11:17 AM ^
I have a CCP and they told us in class that you can transport a weapon without a a CCP but you have to carry the magazine and the weapon in separate places in your vehicle or it could result in a felony weapons charge.
Michigan is an open carry state so you can carry but no part of the weapon can be concealed or you can be charged.
The only way to transport a loaded weapon or have any or all of the weapon concealed is with a CCP.
December 1st, 2022 at 11:43 AM ^
That was the old Kansas law. But 8 years ago the legislator passed a bill for open carry. If you have a loaded gun on your car seat or carried on your person it is completely legal in Kansas. If you keep it hidden in your glove box or concealed on your person you would need to apply for a concealed carry permit.
December 1st, 2022 at 1:00 PM ^
Michigan law provides that anytime a firearm is inside a motor vehicle it is considered a concealed weapon. Keeping the ammo separate from the gun in locked containers is the way without a ccp
December 1st, 2022 at 12:42 PM ^
If he was brandishing or threatening someone with a gun he’d be charged with brandishing or threatening someone with a gun,

Excuse me while I peruse Michigan's roster for young DTs.

Or how about Kris Jenkins?
December 1st, 2022 at 10:55 AM ^
Of course this would happen at the most crucial part of the year.
December 1st, 2022 at 10:59 AM ^
Having this pop up two months after the incident is an absolutely horrible look. :(
December 1st, 2022 at 10:59 AM ^
It happened before Indiana and looks suspiciously like they waited till after the OSU game to actually file the charges
