OT: US vs. Wales in the World Cup

Submitted by VCavman24 on November 21st, 2022 at 1:56 PM

November has arrived, which naturally means that it is time for the World Cup.  The United States faces off against Wales in a few minutes (2:00 p.m. EST).  This is the first World Cup game for the US since a hard-fought loss against Belgium in the Round of 16 in Brazil in 2014.  For Wales, this is the first World Cup they have qualified for since they reached the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup in Sweden!

In earlier group play, England trounced Iran, 6-2.  (Yes, Wales and England have separate teams, and yes, they coincidentally are in the same group.)

The over/under for the game is 2.5 goals, while the US is favored by 0.5 goals.

So I'm in my infancy in my soccer fandom, to me that looked like about as dominating of a 1st half as you could have.

Hopefully the US can add a goal and put this thing away.

Admittedly I know nothing of how soccer penalties or cards are given but does it seem like these Welshmens are getting a lot of calls and not so much for the USA. I see no consistency in these refs.

I don’t watch soccer outside of the USA in the World Cup. Is the incessant whining to officials normal? I feel like I am watching a field full of Izzo’s. This is something that bothers me in all of sport, I am of the opinion that officials are there to make sure the rules of the game are followed and asses penalties if they are not. I do not understand why it has devolved into having a conversation after every call. This is a big reason why I cannot stand the NBA.

I hate FIFA.  Way more corrupt than o$u.

US on the attack with clear possession, whistle for a down whale.  They have possession, not aggressively attacking, no whistle for a down Pulisic.  Wtf.

IGNORANT NON-SOCCER FAN TAKE

That felt like every playoff hockey game where a team is better but turtles with a lead and can't regain offensive flow after the opponent inevitably ties it.

Total ref show but still needed to capitalize on the opportunity to get the win. Dumb dumb dumb penalty to let them tie. 3 points goes a long way in this group and they wasted a great opportunity for it.

Could be a serious problem if England beats us and then let off the gas in their last game against Wales as they would’ve clinched already. Wales could be playing for the next round at that point against a soft or not as interested England.

About what was to be expected from the USMNT. Some nice stretches and valuable experience for the youngest players, but not enough quality in the defensive back line. PK was legit and Zimmerman just made a unneeded foul. Is Reyna still hurt? Really could have used him in the second half.

Too bad they couldn't play Iran next. If England beats the US and has six points they will rest the stars or guys on cards versus Wales. England appear pretty deep so maybe it won't matter and they will get the nine points.

Iran seemed really distracted. Many didn't sing their national anthem. Must be hard to play when there is so much government turmoil back home.

I did not like Greggggs player management there - Wales comes out on the front foot, and US is slow to respond. Also, subbing three at once is what you do when you’re behind and need to throw things at the wall - you were ahead at that time, you can space out your subs and slow the game down.

Zimmerman with an absolutely horrendous challenge. Bale has his back to the goal on a ball that’s bouncing. You’re in good position there - what are you doing going down?

Where was Gio? No excuse for Morris, likely your 26th man, to get into a game unless you’re up 3-0. This game was essentially a must win and you leave your best player on the bench? Makes zero sense.

now you HAVE to get a result against England. It’s not impossible but it’s also not likely…

That was one of the dumbest penalties I've ever seen, the Wales player wasn't even facing the goal and want controlling the ball.

The US played the second half like it was up 3-0, they should have been playing like it was still 0-0.

Stupid draw.

There is much "Wale-ing" and gnashing of teeth because of how a potential 1-0 victory escaped the grasp of Team USA.

And with that contribution to the thread, I'll now show myself out
