OT: US vs. Wales in the World Cup
November has arrived, which naturally means that it is time for the World Cup. The United States faces off against Wales in a few minutes (2:00 p.m. EST). This is the first World Cup game for the US since a hard-fought loss against Belgium in the Round of 16 in Brazil in 2014. For Wales, this is the first World Cup they have qualified for since they reached the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup in Sweden!
In earlier group play, England trounced Iran, 6-2. (Yes, Wales and England have separate teams, and yes, they coincidentally are in the same group.)
The over/under for the game is 2.5 goals, while the US is favored by 0.5 goals.

WEAH!!!!!!

Well-deserved goal as they have been bossing the match. Nicely taken.

We're going to see a couple 2x4's before this match is over.
November 21st, 2022 at 2:53 PM ^
The USA is a step quicker at every position.

So I'm in my infancy in my soccer fandom, to me that looked like about as dominating of a 1st half as you could have.
Hopefully the US can add a goal and put this thing away.

Pretty solid goalkeeping for the US

Admittedly I know nothing of how soccer penalties or cards are given but does it seem like these Welshmens are getting a lot of calls and not so much for the USA. I see no consistency in these refs.

This is often true of any USA international match played anywhere.

I don’t watch soccer outside of the USA in the World Cup. Is the incessant whining to officials normal? I feel like I am watching a field full of Izzo’s. This is something that bothers me in all of sport, I am of the opinion that officials are there to make sure the rules of the game are followed and asses penalties if they are not. I do not understand why it has devolved into having a conversation after every call. This is a big reason why I cannot stand the NBA.

Yes.
...and Ronaldo is basically Cindy Crosby.

That's how it is across all nations/leagues. I watch a lot of soccer and I find it very annoying along with the diving. Referees could easily get this behavior out of the game if they started carding players for dissent and diving, but they never do.

Way to blow 3 points.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:41 PM ^
Well, two points.
November 21st, 2022 at 3:43 PM ^
Fuuuuuuu...
November 21st, 2022 at 3:43 PM ^
Damn…that sucks. Keeper got a touch on it too.
November 21st, 2022 at 3:43 PM ^
Drink a beer for all of the fans at the game who cannot.
November 21st, 2022 at 3:43 PM ^
Well that stinks
November 21st, 2022 at 3:44 PM ^
Where is the team from the first half?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
November 21st, 2022 at 3:48 PM ^
Fouling Batman’s cousin in the box… not a great idea, I think…
November 21st, 2022 at 3:48 PM ^
If the rest of the group bracket is chalk, goal differential is going to decide it. US needs to light up Iran.
November 21st, 2022 at 3:50 PM ^
Unbelievably stupid tackle there to give Bale a penalty kick. Feels like 2016 OSU. Just handing away a win.
November 21st, 2022 at 3:52 PM ^
An injury is an injury but holy hell the theatrics.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:00 PM ^
I hate FIFA. Way more corrupt than o$u.
US on the attack with clear possession, whistle for a down whale. They have possession, not aggressively attacking, no whistle for a down Pulisic. Wtf.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:01 PM ^
Acosta just saved a goal
November 21st, 2022 at 4:01 PM ^
What a shame. Just handed the tie to Wales.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:11 PM ^
You are not going to get a lot of open doors like that in the World Cup. Gotta take advantage of it and they didn't.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:01 PM ^
Just Beat England
November 21st, 2022 at 4:11 PM ^
A draw would be fantastic.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:05 PM ^
IGNORANT NON-SOCCER FAN TAKE
That felt like every playoff hockey game where a team is better but turtles with a lead and can't regain offensive flow after the opponent inevitably ties it.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:06 PM ^
Americans totally biffed that one!
November 21st, 2022 at 4:07 PM ^
Not great, Bob.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:08 PM ^
Scoring in soccer is too much like "plinko" - especially with how few shots on goal actually occur per game.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:09 PM ^
Total ref show but still needed to capitalize on the opportunity to get the win. Dumb dumb dumb penalty to let them tie. 3 points goes a long way in this group and they wasted a great opportunity for it.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:11 PM ^
For a big guy that Bale sure goes down easy
November 21st, 2022 at 4:12 PM ^
Gotta love Walker Zimmerman with not only one of the stupidest fouls in World Cup history, but the finger wag afterwards like he just did something good.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:56 PM ^
That wasn’t a DB batting a ball away finger wave celebration. He knew a penalty was coming and was trying to plead his case.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:13 PM ^
Could be a serious problem if England beats us and then let off the gas in their last game against Wales as they would’ve clinched already. Wales could be playing for the next round at that point against a soft or not as interested England.
November 21st, 2022 at 5:13 PM ^
Although, if we lose to England and Wales beats Iran, England would need to make sure of getting at least a point against Wales so as not to be the runner-up. Likely difference between playing Netherlands or playing Ecuador in the round of 16. Not insignificant.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:24 PM ^
Gave the game away. Basically didn't play in the 2nd half. Three Lions gonna smoke these boys.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:33 PM ^
I disagree. They looked out of sorts from about 50-70', but overall, they played with a lot of energy and composure. They will be a challenge for England.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:33 PM ^
Gonn need to find a way to get a draw against England. Then beat Iran, of course
November 21st, 2022 at 4:55 PM ^
About what was to be expected from the USMNT. Some nice stretches and valuable experience for the youngest players, but not enough quality in the defensive back line. PK was legit and Zimmerman just made a unneeded foul. Is Reyna still hurt? Really could have used him in the second half.
Too bad they couldn't play Iran next. If England beats the US and has six points they will rest the stars or guys on cards versus Wales. England appear pretty deep so maybe it won't matter and they will get the nine points.
Iran seemed really distracted. Many didn't sing their national anthem. Must be hard to play when there is so much government turmoil back home.
November 21st, 2022 at 4:57 PM ^
I did not like Greggggs player management there - Wales comes out on the front foot, and US is slow to respond. Also, subbing three at once is what you do when you’re behind and need to throw things at the wall - you were ahead at that time, you can space out your subs and slow the game down.
Zimmerman with an absolutely horrendous challenge. Bale has his back to the goal on a ball that’s bouncing. You’re in good position there - what are you doing going down?
Where was Gio? No excuse for Morris, likely your 26th man, to get into a game unless you’re up 3-0. This game was essentially a must win and you leave your best player on the bench? Makes zero sense.
now you HAVE to get a result against England. It’s not impossible but it’s also not likely…
November 21st, 2022 at 5:08 PM ^
Some kind of a point against England would be extremely helpful but not absolutely necessary. Really the US just has to do better against England and Iran than Wales does, and the US is at least reasonably likely to do so.
November 21st, 2022 at 6:28 PM ^
I agree with most of this, but with regards to the 3 subs at once comment: You get 5 subs but you can only use them at three times so at least 2 of the subs have to happen with another sub or you don't get to use 2 of them.
November 21st, 2022 at 5:07 PM ^
That was one of the dumbest penalties I've ever seen, the Wales player wasn't even facing the goal and want controlling the ball.
The US played the second half like it was up 3-0, they should have been playing like it was still 0-0.
Stupid draw.
November 21st, 2022 at 5:15 PM ^
There is much "Wale-ing" and gnashing of teeth because of how a potential 1-0 victory escaped the grasp of Team USA.
And with that contribution to the thread, I'll now show myself out
