Donovan Edwards Follow Up Tweet....

Submitted by smitty1983 on October 27th, 2022 at 11:31 AM

From his twitter...

"The retweet was a glitch. I speak for myself. I know what’s in my heart. I am unequivocally against racism, exploitation & oppression in all forms, including stereotyping and trafficking in hate. I have nothing but love for others & I never judge anyone based on race or religion."

What is so incredibly dangerous about discussing this, or any other topic relating to Michigan football, that requires that a thread be locked? If Edwards’ Twitter is as described, and you’re not saying it isn’t, it’s interesting, relevant and maybe a bit disturbing, but no one is going to be injured by talking about it.

Social media can really, really suck.

One of the fatal, yet necessary flaws of our species is how we judge judge/conclude based upon flimsy data.  Happens every day, and it's something we do to survive.

Examples:
Every day I drive down a road with a dozen large trees that are not perfectly perpendicular.  Do I have all of the data in order to judge if one of those trees might fall on my car at the moment I drive by?  No.  But I make assumptions based upon limited data to proceed with my life.

I get into an elevator on the 20th floor.  Do I know for a fact that the cables are secure and that it might not plunge me to my death?  No, I don't have that data.  But I make assumptions on limited data to proceed with life.

A guy cuts me off in traffic and I conclude he's an asshole even though in other scenarios he could end up being my best friend.

Every day we constantly make judgments and draw conclusions based upon limited data, otherwise nothing would ever happen.

But as they say, nothing is good in extremes, and social media, especially Twitter, is a great example of the downside of this natural tendency to draw sweeping conclusions on limited data.  Someone reposts by accident, or misinterprets something and writes a few words about it. and God forbid.  They are Satan reborn, with zero context, zero understanding of the person and who they are, and out come the torch and the pitch fork responses, from the comfort and safety of our homes.

I'm 100% with Donovan on this.

Beat State.

Donovan Edwards is one of the most genuine and down to earth humans in the history of Michigan Football. I would struggle to believe he did this on purpose.

Literally nobody who isn’t a Michigan fan believes that he just accidentally retweeted this. And the university clearly doesn’t either given the response to go to the holocaust museum. Edwards is a young guy who probably hasn’t had a ton of opportunity to form close relationships with Jewish people and this is a fantastic learning opportunity.

He went to West Bloomfield High School. West Bloomfield has the highest concentration of Jews in Michigan and is home to the largest Reform temple in the country. It is also home to numerous other Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox temples. I passed by 5 on my way to work today actually on my way to drop off my kids at Hillel Day School where ex-IDF commandos guard the school.

He quite literally could not have had any better opportunity to form closer relationships with Jewish people growing up in SE Michigan. Stop making excuses. If a white player made a similar tweet about about black people, he would be kicked off the team and rightly so. Anti-semitism is an accepted form of hatred in this country. How many other religions have to have armed security and plain clothes security at their places of worship during the holidays?  It's long been a problem at the University and this just shows how bad it has gotten. I will never spend another penny at or in support of the University. The response here and from the University has been disgusting and I am ashamed of it.

First half of your post was informative and I appreciate that but...

If a white player made a similar tweet about about black people, he would be kicked off the team and rightly so.

Do you have examples of our team kicking players off the team for tweets or similar conduct. This sounds baseless to me.

How many other religions have to have armed security and plain clothes security at their places of worship during the holidays?

I am not sure if they do but Muslims and Sikhs have been targets for violence many, many times.

The response here and from the University has been disgusting and I am ashamed of it.

Edwards said it was a glitch and that he does not have any hate in his heart towards anyone based on race or religion. The University is also using this as a learning experience by taking the team to the Holocaust Museum. I do not know what else would be reasonable given the circumstances.

I will never spend another penny at or in support of the University.

Bye.

A Texas offensive lineman said something pretty racist - something about hunters have to get their guns and get after him because an n***** was in the White House in reference to Obama. Mack Brown kicked him off a day later. That one comes to mind immediately. I don't remember his name, but it's easily Googleable.

Appreciate the comment on Muslims and Sikhs, and while Sikhs have been targets of late and Muslims in New Zealand, I am unaware of any other religion in the U.S. that has to have the level of armed security that Jews have to have at their places of worship due to repeated threats of violence and vandalism.

You can make the all false equivalencies you want. The simple fact is that anti-semitism and well accepted form of racism in this country and worldwide. I don't accept his apology nor do I believe it is in any way genuine. He has an anti-semitism problem whether he wants to admit it or not. Just because he's not saying "round 'em up and send them to the chambers" doesn't make it any less serious. Do you really think that if a middling White player said something to the effect of "all blacks are lazy and mooch off welfare" he'd still be on the team? Or at least not suspended? Give me a break. We all know the answer to this. It's acceptable to hate Jews because it's seen as punching up rather than down.

Take the fact that anti-semitism is alive, well, and accepted and that Edwards is good at football, and well this is what you have - people bending over backwards to defend him.

Playing football at the University is a privilege and not a right. He doesn't seem to understand or appreciate that. If the University is going to stand by him, that is incredibly depressing.

Your comparison isn't actually a comparison.  DE actually said nothing.  He simply retweeted something someone else wrote.  The assumption you are making is that a retweet is an endorsement of the tweet in its entirety.  He subsequently stated he does not agree with the portion of the retweet that offends you.

Put down your pitchfork.  We all make mistakes in our communications -- and social media is a forum that likes to amplify them.

Expecting a cost to him for this.  I don't buy this being a "glitch" any more than you do.  Nobody wants to pound Sparty into shit-giblets more than me.  But dude needs to be suspended for the Sparty game.  Then move on.

Everything after the first sentence feels genuine but save me the "glitch" argument unless he's saying, in a really obtuse way, that he messed up mentally when the retweeted hate speech.

Anyway, it sounds like the team is going to visit the Holocaust museum in the off-season and I hope it's a learning experience for all.

Uhhh...not cool. we've heard and seen him speak - he's a bright, thoughtful young man that seems universally loved (making this even more hurtful) - and yes, it could be any number of meanings with "glitch," but misses the point. As sincere as he sounds in his statement, he would have been better off saying that he was unaware of how this retweet would be perceived and, upon reflection, realized the implications of what was being conveyed through Ye's absurd and hateful trope.

Speaking for myself, not the site here: this is a C- response. I'm not expecting a 19-year-old to have the most profound thing to say, but not having hate in your heart--basically intent--is the lowest bar to clear.

One bar higher than that is where I expect an athlete to be. That is where you know how to recognize *THAT* hate is trafficked, and that it's wrong to participate in it.

Beyond that is where I would hope a Michigan athlete who went to a good high school around me would be. You understand that all racism and antisemitism and homophobia and transphobia all the rest is stupid, that if it ever sounds like it makes sense to trust that you need to look at it again because you're being stupid, that the measure of bigotry in your politics directly correlates with how little you've examined your politics. That it is perfectly legitimate to judge somebody, including yourself, and the degree to which they should be taken seriously by the degree of stupid in what they say.

And in my dreams, I would hope that they have as much wisdom as those who know how to help others examine their stupid shit (because we all start out with good hearts and empty minds), and provide leadership in changing that.

Bullshit. Sharing tweets supporting that vile hate monger Louis Farrakhan was a "glitch" too? Give me a break. This is a non-apology. If this was any other group, he would be kicked off the team, but hate against Jews is just acceptable.

I'm glad he said something, but as a jewish person who wants to root for this guy wholeheartedly, I would really have liked to hear from him that he opposes anti-semitism specifically and that he has no problem with jewish people. It's great to oppose hatred and oppression generally, but the initial tweet this is following up on wasn't general.

Honestly I think he is probably just a Kanye fan. Retweeted something supporting an artist he favors without taking the time to look closer at it. I don't think any intent was involved but I think he may have purposefully glossed over the hateful part. I think that was the glitch. I also believe he used the term glitch as in he made an error as opposed to there was a technical problem that tweeted for him.

Im not going to bury someone for making an ignorant statement as a teenager. Lord knows some ignorant stuff, that I truly do not believe, came out of my mouth at that age too. I think the university is handling it the right way. I think it is silly to suggest he should be suspended for any amount of time based on a bad decision to share something on the internet.

Good. Was it a "glitch"? I very much doubt it. Also wish he'd specifically said he is against anti-semitism. But glad he's at least backtracked and hopefully he has learned. And glad we're educating the guys with a trip to the holocaust museum.

Edward's is human. Let's forgive and educate.  I've personally been victim to racial attacks my whole life. Big fucking deal. Sucks when your a kid but once you old enough you realize who cares what people think.  It's just the way it is. And still most people, 99% in my opinion are good.

But let me clarify I'm not even judging Edward. A retweet could have so many different meanings. We don't know his intentions. And yes it could be a glitch, slight percentage chance.

None of us have walked a mile in Edward's shoes. Just cuz he has liked Farakhan or KKK whatever doesn't mean anything. We don't know the significance of his ideas.

Again possibly an educational moment for the team.

But let's get a big group hug for MgoBlog, everyone whites, blacks, browns, all religions or atheist . Let's go blue!

It should be impossible to tweet or RT anything without solving a series of complex mathematical equations and two crappy captchas. You don't have to put any effort into what you are publishing until you realize you glitched up.

I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt and interpret his use of the word “glitch” according to this:

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=glitch

Glitch: (verb) to make a mistake, to make an error, or to have a sudden lapse in judgment; to mess something up

I’m also inclined to forgive his lapse in judgment. It would have been nice if he had explicitly apologized. I agree with Seth above. C- response. Let’s move on.

Precisely why I don’t do any form of social media and am adamant to my kids to stay the hell off of it. Social media is nothing but trouble! Read it, laugh at it and leave it at that.
