Outside of one play, near complete domination!
October 15th, 2022 at 3:37 PM ^
Defense continues to improve every week and pitched a shutout in the second half while only giving up three (?) big plays all game. Damn good
October 15th, 2022 at 3:44 PM ^
PSU did get a field goal in the third quarter, but it took a perfect NFL-caliber throw from Clifford to get them in position for it.
The defense is leveling up every week.
October 15th, 2022 at 4:08 PM ^
I think we forget about it being gusty. Led to play choice I think.
October 15th, 2022 at 5:07 PM ^
Ahh you’re right…I’d forgotten 😝
October 15th, 2022 at 3:38 PM ^
Really upset that Nick Singleton picked up some yards in garbage time so I couldn't say: "Singleton? More like Single Digits!"
I had that joke ready for like an hour and they just come in at the end and mess it up.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:40 PM ^
Still good.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:38 PM ^
I counted 14 good plays by PSU today that's it. All game 14. Hell of a game
October 16th, 2022 at 8:46 AM ^
Feels like you're perhaps being generous. Wild!
October 15th, 2022 at 3:38 PM ^
What more can you say? They retired Clifford.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:56 PM ^
Eh, he was close to retirement age already
October 15th, 2022 at 4:04 PM ^
We have finally broke their last 3 QBs
October 15th, 2022 at 5:39 PM ^
Clifford the Blue dog...
October 15th, 2022 at 3:39 PM ^
Defense absolutely dominated a tricky offense. It was completely lopsided, and coaches still made great adjustments as the game went on. Love to see it.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:39 PM ^
Minter doing work.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:42 PM ^
Dominant performance. Gave up ten points (and only three in the second half) as a result of a perfect NFL throw (tip the cap) that you can't do anything about and a scramble where Clifford rolled a "20" on his d20.
Other than that, dominance.
October 15th, 2022 at 4:05 PM ^
Honestly this seems a pretty good way to describe all of PSU's points.
Clifford rolled two 20's and JJ rolled a 1.
October 15th, 2022 at 5:39 PM ^
+1 for rolled a "20" on his d20!
October 15th, 2022 at 3:42 PM ^
They only gave up 10 pts. Can't blame them for the PSU pick-6. The pass rush was good enough. There were a lot of 3 and outs and critical 4th down stops in the second half.
October 16th, 2022 at 4:50 AM ^
Getting home with four rushers. . . woosh. And that Minter adjustment where he took several guys off the line? Hot damn.
EDIT: Okay, I'm seeing below he had done that before. Only new to Joel Klatt. And me.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:42 PM ^
Great job pretty much the whole game. Minter had them figured out and deserves so much credit. We got good pressure only rushing four. They just dominated PSU. A great day.
October 15th, 2022 at 4:47 PM ^
That look with Okie in the 9-wide spot, minus a DL, that they use to run stunts and twists has been money these last few games.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:42 PM ^
We've heard how good Iowa's defense is. We've heard how good Penn State's defense is. Maybe it's time to start talking about how good Michigan's defense is.
October 15th, 2022 at 5:40 PM ^
Maybe!
October 15th, 2022 at 5:54 PM ^
Nope, Penn St was overrated as hell...
/s.
At least thats what the comments will be from the "experts".
October 15th, 2022 at 3:43 PM ^
Wanna see Minter perform like this against a Maryland like offense, but he's really improved. We have consistently had great blitzes on 3rd down this year
October 15th, 2022 at 3:45 PM ^
i am sorry to let you know that Minter did perform like this against a literal Maryland offense.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:44 PM ^
Penn State's offense isn't great or anything, but the D held them to 10 points. That's... good.
I was worried about the dynamic RB getting loose in the secondary, and how that could affect the outcome of a tight game.
Turns out that is exactly what happened, but it was our dynamic RBs getting loose when the game was tight. PSU was absolutely jailed.
Maybe our defense is good.
October 15th, 2022 at 5:41 PM ^
Maybe our team is good...
October 15th, 2022 at 3:44 PM ^
what can i say? this is the second straight game where the defense has absolutely put a vice grip on their opponents.
is there a rookie of the year award for a coach? Minter's making a good case.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:47 PM ^
D is fucking awesome. They totally stuffed PSU. They are able to bring pressure with just 4. What a game by D. They are getting to be the D from last year and they look like they can do the same or even better than last year. Will Johnson made a nice play there on that 3rd & long. Glad to see the future at works there. Our DL is strong and dominate in the trenches. OSU has to worry about this D. They are only going to improve. All goals are in front of this D and they showed today, in a big way, what they can do
October 16th, 2022 at 9:15 AM ^
”Penn State ran all over Auburn. They’re an ES-EE-SEE defense, so Penn State’s offense must be spectacular.“
October 15th, 2022 at 3:47 PM ^
There's probably no such thing as a perfect defensive game, but this was demolition at the very least.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:51 PM ^
In 1997 did we know they were the 1997 defense by game 7?
October 15th, 2022 at 3:54 PM ^
We did - early season schedule was quality that year, including Colorado and ND in the OOC.
October 15th, 2022 at 4:45 PM ^
Definitely. It was already known to be nationally elite several games earlier; game 7 was MSU, when Charles Woodson had two picks, including *that* one.
Penn State was the first team to score on the defense in the fourth quarter that year. The defense was the story of the team from game one.
October 15th, 2022 at 5:43 PM ^
I think I knew by the PSU game....
October 15th, 2022 at 9:08 PM ^
In 1997 I was working seven days a week in a very high pressure situation trying to save a small tech company and couldn't watch a game. A few minutes after the PSU game my brother (also an alum) called me at work and said "we just crushed Penn State. I think we going all the way. Do you want to get Rose Bowl tickets. I said yes go for it we'll find a way." And the team did and we did and we watched Michigan win the national championship.
So yes. Every fan in 1997 knew very well the potential of that team.
October 15th, 2022 at 11:00 PM ^
after the colorado game i told a buddy of mine that that was a national championship-caliber defense. he got really pissed at me, obviously, but it was pretty clear, pretty early, that the defense was really, realllllly good, if not generational.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:51 PM ^
Tremendous. Until Clifford's well executed fake handoff, 1 yard of rushing if I am not mistaken. Allowed just 10 points to the 10th ranked team in the country and a wylie 6th year quarterback. Just tremendous.
October 16th, 2022 at 4:53 AM ^
I thought I heard the announcers say nine. Masked by the score, but mind-boggling domination on both sides of the ball. And special teams are money, so you operate with a certain critical confidence.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:52 PM ^
Really thought Penn State was going to be able to run outside the tackles and because of it put together drives. Was really wrong. Am really happy about it!
October 15th, 2022 at 3:53 PM ^
Gave up one big play that Clifford just had a really good read on. Otherwise, that was domination. They gave up ten points to a team with legit skill talent.
Grade out at a solid A.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:54 PM ^
Take away those two ridiculously lucky plays (c'mon, that duck pass gets completed 1/20 times), and Penn State has 158 total yards.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:54 PM ^
The defensive line really is better this year.
October 15th, 2022 at 3:57 PM ^
Penn State's running backs had 41 yards on 13 carries
October 15th, 2022 at 4:04 PM ^
They got two plays on us. Outside of that complete domination. This is insane to do to a top 10 team of comparable talent.
Defense went above and beyond and beyond and beyond. GJ BOYS
October 15th, 2022 at 4:11 PM ^
Glad that really good RB Singleton didn’t play!
October 15th, 2022 at 4:14 PM ^
We’ve got enough 1st and 2nd year players on the line and in the secondary that I have zero worry.
October 15th, 2022 at 4:19 PM ^
Have to give a shout-out to the big house crowd today. They sounded amazing on TV. Felt like they were a part of the defense.
