CJ Carr committing on Thursday...probably not to Michigan
All signs point to Notre Dame. I'm not usually a "sky is falling" guy when it comes to recruiting but this is really bad.

Yeah, this is really bad
Well since was camping at ND this past weekend, it's pretty obvious who he is committing to.
I guess it really isn't a long way to go.
Yep, just get those Michigan Insider subscriptions in and you could help turn the tide...or something like that. At least that "content" was free.
I am normally the voice of reason when it comes to recruiting and kids committing elsewhere. But if this kid actually commits to Notre Dame, I could argue that this is worse that Justin Boren - Justin actually grew up in Columbus and let's face it - he left at a time that Michigan football was collapsing on itself.
CJ could probably commit to just about any school in the country and I think that most of the fan base would be fine with any of them but 3. Why pick one of the three? It is very weird and an f* you to the Michigan fan base.
Go to Bama and win a Nat Champ and get picked in the top 5 of the NFL draft. What possible pitch could Notre Dame give him? They have had ok success the last 10 years but their current coaching staff has zero wins and they have shown zero ability to develop QBs.
Just looked at 247’s CB’s. He is as good as gone to ND. Best of luck Mr. Carr.
Why pick one of the three?
I get what you’re saying, but choosing Notre Dame doesn’t equate to him going to OSU or MSU. ND isn’t on the schedule and isn’t in the conference. On the field, it doesn’t affect U-M any more than if he went to Bama.
Well, maybe.
I ran in a 5k for Chad Tough about 6 years ago, and CJ ran past me at one point. I could have said something then, but I didn't.
as sick as it makes me feel to say this, i am left with no choice but to hope that ohio state banishes notre dame into the shadow realm opening weekend and puts an end to this momentum
Their coaching staff will need put up some big wins this year if they want to keep their class intact, I’d imagine. There is “new coach smell” there but if they aren’t winning big games, there will be questions to be answered and guys may look elsewhere in the fall. Of all the programs we are competing for recruits with, the Irish have the most work to do on Saturdays to keep their class a class.
Indeed. Freeman hasn't had to make anybody upset yet. He hasn't had to name a starter or suspend anybody or give a firm handshake. He's the cool coach and everybody's buddy right now. Until OSU puts a beatdown on them and he has to start passing out blame for the loss
Wow, rooting for OSU on opening weekend? Stay classy Ron Burgundy. JK of course.
I understand what you're saying but at least we get to control our outcome against OSU in late November. We don't get that chance against those "holier than thou" assholes from South Bend who believe they're above everybody else.
It feels weird and dirty but I might have to agree with you. I hope CJ has fun watching the Buckeyes beat ND's asses by 30 points in September.
I guess my only justification is that an 11-0 Michigan going into Columbus to play 11-0 OSU would almost be too awesome to even think about.
I don't know why you wish anything different anyway. We play OSU and ND is an independent darling with a special playoff deal. F@#% Notre Dame.
Not good lol. It really seems like Matt Weiss and Michigan haven't even been recruiting him. Dante Moore is clearly Michigans priority in 2023 literally being their only QB offer but in 2024 they have a like a dozen offers out. They just had a 5 star from California come out this last weekend. I wonder if Carr senses he isn't Michigans priority
I know it's lame to complain about recruiting two years from signing day, but truly only Michigan could lose this kid to Notre Dame
Also I would like to take a second to complain about the recruiting staff. Clink, Sherrone, Bellamy and Jay Harbaugh are hard carrying the recruiting for this staff. Hart, Minter, Weiss, Newsome, Helow and to a less extent Elston have all been not great on the trail. It's early for a lot of that group but the early returns have not been good.
"“I’ve known for awhile where I want to go,” Carr told 247Sports. “I’m excited to get this out there and start recruiting for that school.”"
Or, maybe Michigan knows that Carr isn't coming to Michigan because he told them, hence going all in for Moore. I heard rumblings that Carr wanted to chart his own course and that might mean getting out from the figurative and literal shadow of the Michigan program
....and / or is this Lloyd's revenge for the AD pushing him out.
15 years later and we're still spreading things that aren't true? He was never pushed out...he wanted to retire after 2006 but Bill Martin had no backup plan and asked him to stay another year.
It's revenge for making him stay another year!
Outrage will be outrage!!!
"...chart his own course..."
Whatever.
His grandfather never played for Michigan. And only diehards know his dad was on the team in a deep-bench backup role (seriously - he passed for 126 yards in 4 years). He has the opportunity to stand out in Michigan football history as a Carr, not as a legacy or as his grandad's pet project. And besides, he is the only person in the Carr household who can carve his own path at Michigan. His dad played for his grandad, CJ would play for neither. In fact, CJ would have no connection whatsoever to the current Michigan team. His path is his own to blaze.
I dunno, maybe he's still sore at the way Michigan fans treated Lloyd on/after his retirement (and subsequent refusal to embrace Rich Rod)? Or maybe he just believes strongly in the Catholic Way? Doesn't matter, if he doesn't want to play for Michigan, I'll wish him luck wherever he goes.
Are you seriously saying that since Lloyd Carr never played for Michigan , he's not a legacy and has no connection to the program?
I can't blame him if that's the reason (completely speculative of course) he doesn't want to go to Michigan
It'd be in every damn sports story, every talk radio show, lead off of every football broadcast.
Just like Clayton Kershaw and Matthew Stafford were roommates, Jimmy Graham/Antonio Gates played basketball, etc
"CJ Carr, the grandson of famous Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, last coach to win a national championship at Michigan...."
Heck I grew up in Ann Arbor and wanted to get the hell out of town for college, just on its face. I can't blame any locals for wanting to experience a different place during their college years
Nope, not saying that. Merely saying that he can blaze his own path even at Michigan. The path he blazes will be on the field - neither his dad nor Lloyd have any career stats to bounce against. CJ would be compared to his coach.
Maybe that was enough to turn him away, when added to the whole legacy thing.
Was Aidan able to blaze his own path? I'd say he did, with aplomb...
Yeah, but South Bend really sucks and so does pretty much everything around it. Dude goes from AA to Boulder, I get you, nice change. South Bend, not so much, they do have the Studebaker National Museum there, pretty hot spot for the young crowd...
Can’t speak for South Bend but as much as I dislike ND I have to say I enjoyed their campus and thought it had a nice aesthetic…as did Duke, which I loathe.
I am with you 100. Place has ZERO, NOTHING, NADA. The bars suck and the girls are ugly and I am not making it up. I mean it is a good academic school and they have the whole "I'm Catholic" or "I'm Irish" thing going for them that induces the wannabe bandwagon jumpers to their fandom. Other than that.......... SB is a nowhereville.
SB doesn't even have "Mayor Pete" anymore!!
Um, his grandfather did play for Michigan - Tom Curtis (Tammi's dad).
But you cant blame the kid if he wants to go out on his own path
So his maternal grandfather played for Michigan and his paternal grandfather won the only modern-day NC for Michigan as the head coach, and we’re going to lose him to ND? Oof.
Moore and Carr are not in the same class. Moore is 2023 and Carr is 2024.
Definitely a huge dick punch to Michigan if that both wind up at Notre Dame.
There are only a couple of schools that can land five star QB’s in consecutive classes and we are not one of them. We were never going to get Moore and Carr. I doubt Notre Dame will either. I would assume missing out on Carr increases our chances with Moore, but assumptions can be a dangerous thing.
I would say this basically locks in Moore to the good guys, but there’s always the concern that a southern school will step in and throw an absurd amount of money at him. Even if you miss, you can always recruit a transfer (if they’re not concerned with credits and actually graduating).
there's no shadow. we've had 2 big wins in 20 years. There is a huge opportunity to "carve his own path" here, given that no QB has been worth a damn for a while until the mc bros showed up.
I wonder if going to Freeman who basically gave the middle finger to osu by saying playing there was a "mistake" and ND was home... somehow appealed to Chad, who is also sorta feeling similar vibes about what he's a part of, and it being okay to go away from that.
Wish some f-ing players in ohio had the balls to do that - a la howard, etc.. they all just fall right in f-ing line.
We have a legacy 5 star QB from a coach that won a title here 25 years ago and another 5 star in our backyard and we appear not to be favorites for either.
Have to think a 30 passing TD performance might change some thoughts on it. Also, putting a decent QB in the league with some hype.
And maybe he resents the Lloyd hate in these parts after Bacons hit piece. Carr was in an impossible spotz the promises he made recruit s, and then the clown show RR came into town and having to sign transfer papers knowing RR offense wasn't right fit at all.
I'm still cringing over the RR era. What a massive phuck up
Or maybe Carr thinks Moore is going to Michigan a year ahead of him. If Moore were earmarked for ND, I doubt Carr would commit there.
worked great for Jimmy Clausen
You spelled "DeShone Kizer" wrong.
Not bad if they close the deal on Dante. Really bad if they lose out on both.
Only Michigan could lose a legacy kid?
Devin Bush Jr. says hello
Since we hired Devin Bush Sr to our coaching staff, it’s probably not the best example to illustrate a recruit not following in their parents or grandparents shoes, but there are plenty of others like Peyton Manning.
I would change-up Sherrone with Helow.
edit: nevermind
if he goes to ND I will hate ND even more
It could actually resurrect Bo.
If we cannot close on CJ Carr, then this would be by far the biggest and most embarrassing recruiting miss for Michigan ever. Especially so if he goes to ND.
I'll wait and see what happens and wait until signing day to be sure, but if he goes to ND and it sticks, then this will be the tipping point for the downfall of our program. Yep, I'm that "sky is falling" camp.
I love some ridiculous hyperbole as much as the next guy... but "biggest and most embarrassing recruiting miss for Michigan ever"? "Tipping point for the downfall of our program"?
Try. Decaf.
Also, just to get in front of the concern, this won't cause the country to end either. :) Although I'm starting to see a theme here with you... lol
Here's some quick and dirty facts. Notre Dame is a great school and a highly acclaimed football program. Michigan is not willing to stop recruiting Dante Moore. It is obvious from interviews and behavior that Moore and Carr (while not in the same class) do not want to be at the same school together. Michigan chose to not stop recruiting Moore, and in the process Carr warmed to Notre Dame. These are things that happen in this wacky world o 'crootin. And more specifically, this thing (Carr to ND) is happening on Thursday. Maybe sleep in that day.
Also, just to get in front of the concern, this won't cause the country to end either. :) Although I'm starting to see a theme here with you... lol
OK, I laughed there! Ha!
I will admit that my post about CJ Carr was a bit hyperbolic, but it may be indicative of several not so great things.
1. The Carr family doesn't think highly of the current coaching staff
2. Our prospects of developing a QB into the future are not great
3. Our prospects of being an overall good program (compared to ND) aren't great
4. Our NIL program blows
Remember, this is not some middling 3-star grandson of Lloyd Carr that we offer out of nepotism
The potential good news is that might have inside track on Dante Moore (but that not likely either).
Hey, I love Lloyd Carr/family as much as the next guy. 1997 was an amazing year. But Lloyd/family have had strong opinions about who should be the coach while he was here, while he was leaving, after he left, and in the subsequent 15 years. They're not all great opinions either. I, for one, would not have been excited about Head Coach Mike DeBord. But they can have opinions. Lloyd earned it. Jason, former QB team alum, sure him too.
Developing Future QBs - Cade to JJ to Dante in 23 and a 25? or one of the other very good '24 QBs that they are targeting as well. It's 2024 recruiting.
Overall Good Program - Uh.. honestly I don't even know how to respond to this. In the summer after the team went 11-1 Reg Season, Beat Ohio, Won the Big Ten, made it to the National Tourney... you're on "prospects of being an overall good program aren't great" island? This is just probably that whole "world is ending" lifeview you should keep working on. :)
NIL Program Blows - yep.
I know, CJ Carr to ND would be "bad". But life is about an infinite amount of occurrences that are both "good" and "bad" and all fall nicely within that broad context of tomorrow is another day.
Surely, this isn't your first rodeo. "Losing" a QB in a class two years from now... legacy or not... to a school / program with a young kid-friendly coach in Freeman and pocket QB friendly offense, isn't even close to being world-ending. If even for the sheer fact that there's still two whole years to make up the gap.
Sure. CJ to ND would not be the end of the world. Life will go on.
But I do think the subtext to this is being overlooked. If it hasn't already been stated, the Michigan community donated millions into his brother's trust (i.e. ChadTough). What does this mean to CJ?
Also, this program has the most positive momentum we've seen in decades. We crushed our main rival and went to the playoffs. Yet, we can't close the most legacy of legacy of recruits ever. This is very unprecedented...in a negative way.
Eeehhh... I dont think you want to go there with ChadTough. Assume that all the support that people gave to the cause was based on the family, and while the tie was there because of the program, I don't think anyone ... on either side ... should feel any kind of sports obligation due to the support given Chad (or vice versa).
Listen, if you want to identify success for the program, use the proofs not the anecdotals. The team crushed its main rival, it went to the playoffs. That's the success. The whim and whimsey of a 16 year old isn't a litmus of anything other than that kids can, and should, make the decision that's best for them individually. Does legacy mean that we had a better shot of landing him? Yes of course. Does it guarantee it? No of course. Does not landing him mean that the sky is falling and it's the tipping point to the falling off of the program? No, obviously not. A player they had a good chance of signing ended up signing with another team. Sounds like the last 20 years Ive been following recruiting.
If people here want to make this a bigger deal than it is, that's really more representative of whatever personal psyche they bring to any and all situations. This is, for all intents, a disappointing, expected if you've been following for the past month, but simply... a single player "loss" for a recruiting class two years from now, that can easily be made up for. It has so very little to do with the overall health or status of the program in the broad picture. And even that picture will change tomorrow.
Suggesting he's beholden to Michigan because Michigan rallied support for his late relative is maybe the worst take ever.
That’s not even a take,so I don’t know where that comes from.
