A Short Collection Of Instant Reaction Spring Game Takes Comment Count

Team Blue defeated Team Maize down at the Big House today in Michigan Football's 2022 Spring Game by a final score of 20-12. It was a day filled with refereeing quirks (including flags thrown by Jim Harbaugh), extravagant celebrations, and plenty of little-known walk ons. An exhibition game doesn't merit a detailed recap like we'd do for a regular season game, since the flow and narrative of the game is not important, but I felt it would still be good to put a post up on the site so all of you can rant in the comments. I presume Seth or Brian will have more detailed takes after a proper re-watch during the week, but this piece will give you a few quick kneejerk takes and observations about what we just witnessed:

OFFENSE

Davis Warren has a cannon for an arm. Today we got a sizable glimpse at walk-on backup QB Davis Warren, who has been battling Alan Bowman for the QB3 designation in spring practice. What stood out the most about Warren was his huge arm, zipping the ball down the field and attempting several deep balls, two of which connected (one to Donovan Edwards and one to Amorion Walker). Warren has more raw talent than your typical walk-on due to his unique story, and that seemed apparent today.

Alex Orji is Joe Milton 2.0. You could say the same about Orji in terms of arm strength, but his accuracy was rough. Orji went 1/7 for 9 yards, and most of his throws were way overthrown, rifled over a receiver's head or 10 yards too deep. However, his muscular build was apparent, rushing seven times for 35 yards, including one 23 yard keeper. Team Maize dialed up a couple designed Orji keepers in short yardage situations, so if you're looking for who will fill the VillariCat role this season, it looks like Orji.

Michigan's skill position players are all good at throwing. With the memory of Donovan Edwards' bomb in the B1G Championship Game still fresh in the mind, Team Blue dialed up two different double pass plays and both worked. Darrius Clemons and Erick All both delivered accurate balls that were completed for 21 and 31 yards, respectively. At this point you have to wonder how many of Michigan's skill position guys can throw the football accurately.

Darrius Clemons hype is real! Michigan's true freshman receiver answered some of the hype he's been getting in spring ball by emerging as Team Blue's favorite receiver. He made three catches for 52 yards, and the most memorable (by far) was a diving 35-yard TD catch. Clemons toasted Joshua Luther down the seam and Alan Bowman overthrew the pass. Clemons laid out and hauled it in, leading to a selfie celebration in the end zone. Kid looks good.

A nice game for Tavierre Dunlap. The Wolverines have an open competition for the burly back role behind Corum and Edwards, and Dunlap is currently the favorite. Today's performance was a nice showing from the RS freshman in his pursuit of that job. Dunlap rushed 18 times for 73 yards and a TD, looking confident running the ball. He did drop a screen pass, but he likely won't be asked to do that much when the season gets started.

DEFENSE

Lots of blitzes. You weren't supposed to hit the QB as part of the rules, but that didn't stop the defenses from getting pressure. Both teams dialed up plenty of blitzes and a lot of them got home. You never show anything schematic in an exhibition game, so there's not much to read into it, but I found it a rather interesting development.

So far, so good for Mike Sainrstil, The Corner. Sainristil didn't pop up much at his new defensive position, but he did memorably get a PBU on Andrel Anthony and looked comfortable doing it. We also saw Sainristil on offense on one occasion too, suggesting that he may feature on both sides of the ball this fall.

Flashes from Mason Graham. The true freshman DT has been getting some spring buzz and he featured in a few moments, including when he drew a holding call on new center Victor Oluwatimi. Graham showed good burst off the line of scrimmage and it seems like the hype that he could see playing time this fall might have some legs.

A solid showing from German Green. The brother of Gemon has seldom seen time away from special teams in his Michigan tenure, and that figures to stay the same this fall, but he did show up in the secondary today. Green broke up a couple passes and I felt it was still worth it to shout him out.

The first look at Will Johnson. I didn't notice the 5* true freshman CB all that much today, but he held his own in the end zone against a route run by Cornelius Johnson. That's not the easiest assignment for a young player, but Johnson did fine. That's about all I can say after first watch.

This offense is possibly all-time great for the program. Our 2 deep at each position probably holds at least 20 quality B1G starters.

QB: The QB who beat OSU in Cade and the QB with the most talent we have had since Henne.

RB: 2 RBs who could go for 1000 yards but also super versatile and weapons in the passing game. Dunlap looks like a great 3rd RB guy who can churn out hard yards.

WR: 2 legit big bodied outside receivers in Anthony and Johnson. 2 do-it-all lineup anywhere guys in Bell and Wilson. Henning who has top end speed and can be a weapon in the slot. At least one of the freshman (probably Clemons) gets snaps.

TE: 2 All-B1G level guys in All and Schoon. The future behind them looks promising as well.

OL: Our interior are going to be absolute ground pounders. Olu, Zinter, and Keegan are Ruiz Onwenu Bredeson level. Hayes is solid (not a first round pick but an NFL player), Jones has the size and agility to be a good RT. Behind them you have guys like Barnhart, Crippen, and more (El Hadi impressed a bit today).

I can’t see a situation where this team doesn’t just run teams off the field by half in the first half of the season.

He will be. He’s had a whole year in the program and he will be the guy. Cade is valuable in a lot of ways. Look at Alabama 2018. Hurts stayed around and backed up Tua, and when Tua went down he came in and won the SEC Championship. The team loves Cade and will rally around him if he needs to step back in, but yes JJ can take this offense to levels we have not seen.

What is crazy is that our second offense is probably good enough to win 10 games on their own; and as a second unit, better than several 1st units we have had in recent years.

*Assuming JJ is the starter* our “second offense” would be:

QB: Cade

RB: Edwards

WR: Wilson

WR: Clemons

Slot: Henning

TE: Schoonmaker

T: El Hadi

G: Attebery

C: Crippen

G: Barnhart

T: Bounds

That second unit could legitimately win 10 games on their own.

I hate to be the guy who says it, but for this offense to reach its potential we need JJ on the field.

And yet you did! Cade can lead this O just like he did last year. JJ may have more upside. And maybe we’ll find out in 2022. But we’d be excited about Cade returning if JJ wasn’t in the picture.

Warren and Clemson were notable surprises -- both looked excellent.  The defense looked sharper than I expected.  Cade looked less sharp than I expected.  I was a bit nervous about the early three-and-outs on offense, but the offenses came together over the course of the game, and without giving anything away.

Overall, very encouraging.  Add JJ and Ronnie Bell to the mix and we could have something really special this year.

This is a deep and talented roster. If they learned their lessons from Georgia and kick up their play a notch or two they may well return to the CFP. It was most interesting that the "worrisome" defense carried the day.

Warren was impressive-in every way. Here, he was so clearly the best QB on the field yesterday that a new QB controversy should be in play. Luck is not a part of good QB play-he was stunningly good and this is repeatable. We will see how that meritocracy is functioning.

Dunlap is who I thought he is. Take this young man on up to #230 and the opposition will be hoping to have Haskins back-that's a stretch but the kid is good.

Oluwatimi is a man-in every way.

***Shame on you, Alex, for that Orji-Milton shot. That was/is a pathetic, pile of shit comment-a fireable offense.***

Down voted for your last sentence.  Why was the comment so bad?  He didn't say that Orji would flame out, nor did he say that Orji wouldn't have a chance.  He compared their styles of play and how they are so similar in build.  And he's spot fucking on!  Both are big people, can run the ball well, have well documented trouble with passing accuracy, and need time to learn how to read a defense.  At this point in their careers, they are the same player.

None of that says Orji will turn out like Milton did.  NONE OF IT!  Yet you shit all over Alex like he said straight up that Orji was destined for failure.

Shame on you, Box, for your inability to read what is written.  You immediately jumped to something that wasn't there based on a bolded headline and blinded yourself with manufactured rage.

I always thought the concern about the RB depth behind Corum and Edwards was weird and overblown. Dunlap came in as a true freshman 4th string RB and still averaged 7.3 YPC. That takes talent regardless of the fact it was against IU and Northern Illinois and he continued to show that talent today. I think RB recruiting has taken a dip recently for whatever reason, but Dunlap looks promising

My hot take: Alex Orji is Joe Milton but faster and stronger.  He fights through tackles.

I was surprised to see Kalel Mullings at RB.  He did good.

Corum and Edwards are going to have big years.  And I was really impressed with Dunlap.

I'm gonna assume you were being polite and take the Milton 2.0 assessment, to also mean, that when Cade and/or JJ has just an average game vs. CSU there's a decent amount of M fans that will want to see Orji start vs. Hawaii.

Devin Warren is the next Cam Newton - can throw 70 yards on a dime.  If all goes well may transfer to TN because he won't be QB1 here.
