Who will QB Michigan this season?

Submitted by rockydude on September 28th, 2021 at 2:30 PM

Nothing against Cade, all he’s done is win. However, I’m just wondering what peoples’ opinions are, regarding who will QB M throughout this season.

After the first game or two, I thought we might go to a two QB system. And when the run game looked unstoppable, I thought Cade was pretty safe. Now, I’m less certain.

I don’t think a change would happen soon, if it did happen, and I’m definitely not trying to say that a change should happen.

But I would like to know who people think WILL be the starter, not who deserves it or what M SHOULD do.

So, if you think Bowman wins the starting job the night before the OSU game, chime in. I like to hear peoples’ thoughts on how this will shake out.

Saw an old Johnny Carson clip on Youtube, Carnac the Magnificent.  So here goes:

A: The back up quarterback.

Q: Who is always the most popular player in Ann Arbor?

Somethings never change.

McNamara has too small of a sample size to really be evaluated.

This has been a run-heavy offense that worked well through the first three games.

Diversify the play-calling.   How many screens or play-actions or roll-outs have we seen this season?  I think I can count the number of them on my mid-section.

On the passing game the execution hasn't been good but the play-calling has been far worse.  Almost nothing creative at all.   Even something as simple as snapping as the receiver in motion is near the QB.   Not every play, of course.   But more than once in a game....Also, if it's going to be run heavy without any kind of RPO run more snaps under center.

Drew Henson. He's clearly a better QB just sitting on the bench. I can't believe we're not playing him.

Oh wait, what year is this?

what a weird way to say it? Plus, QB is a position, hence a noun, not the verb.. as in.. By gumshoe, that young whippersnapper Cade Mcnamara quarterbacked the team to victory!

Your post title makes me tingle uncomfortably.

Also, in a less snarky way - what are you even asking? People to predict doom and gloom or improvement?

I guess a better question is...  Will JJ pass Cade... which i believe is all you want to know about?

I suppose that isn’t a totally awful way to phrase it, as Bowman and Vilari probably won’t really get a real shot, but I don’t like to phrase things so as to try to get the answer I might want. As in, do you think McCarthy will get the job, or are you stupid? It’s pretty certain to be McNamara or McCarthy, but if someone has a dark horse candidate, I’d be interested in hearing why.

And while I appreciate that you did stop with the snark, I find it very hard to believe that you have never heard well regarded football minds use QB as a verb. “TB12 just quarterbacked the Bucs to a great season.” In fact, I’d be surprised if you see an entire game where it is not used as a verb by the announcers at least once.

Oh, no problem. You weren’t being an asshole or anything. (Enough of those without you)

I’m not really trying to predict gloom and doom or improvement, just who will have the QB spot. Cade is in a strange position. It’s not Jalen Hurts strange, but it’s strange. Cade can win every game, and there will still be uncertainty surrounding his position. JJ McCarthy is a pretty tantalizing prospect. I don’t see it as likely that Cade starts next season. But can he hang on and start all the games this season? That’s what’s less clear to me.

For that matter, even though he’s in position to start on Saturday, I don’t know whether he plays all of the QB snaps. We all have to wait and see about the rest of the season. At what point is McCarthy too good to sit?

Well, I'll take it a step further. If cade was rattled or just bad against Rutgers 2nd string DBs, what happens in the weeks coming. That confidence seems shaken over a bunch of incomplete passes? He didn't fumble or throw pick sixes. He had one bad pass and was shook? I just don't buy it. I sense that the coaches don't trust him or any QB, really, and he feels it. That's my take... He has no margin for error because they never give him opportunities. So the frustration we may have seen was him realizing they were going to pack it in

Usually these posts annoy me, but I have to say I understand why you're asking. Generating discussion around this isn't the worst thing and you aren't calling for Cade's job. With that being said, I don't really think Cade is the dude. I think he's fine generally speaking but if he rattles under pressure which seems to be the case, that doesn't bode well for more talented defenses.

I think the offensive scheme has actually been pretty good to really good so far this year but for various reasons, Cade has not been able to put the ball on the money and has been bailed out by good line and back play. I think we do need someone back there who is a bit more of a gamer. JJ obviously has that and Bowman does too if his previous starts are to be believed. I think Cade's fine, seems like a bland version of Rudock to be honest. Don't want to lose him for depth but I would be good to see either of our other two options if they have as firm a grasp of the offense/protections as Cade does.

Many are blowing off this post, but it’s one of the most important questions Michigan football faces and one which may determine the team’s immediate future and Harbaugh’s future with the program. The #1 complaint here is consistently Michigan’s inability to beat OSU. The biggest reason they haven’t been able to beat the Buckeyes isn’t coaching; it’s that OSU has had better players, overall, and has enjoyed an extreme advantage in impact players on offense. Now, finally, Michigan has landed an extremely talented QB recruit who has already shown, in brief flashes and one amazing throw, that he may very well be the kind of gunslinger who can be a difference maker and elevate the play of everyone on offense.

But if you think there’s any way McCarthy is going to sit behind McNamara for two seasons, patiently waiting his turn, you haven’t been following college football very closely. This isn’t Alabama, and McNamara isn’t Hurts, Tagovailoa or Jones. I think they have the choice of making McCarthy the starter soon, or losing him, and McNamara hasn’t shown any reason why they should risk losing him. McCarthy will be the starter before the season is over. I think it should happen now.

This was the kind of reasoned post I had hoped against hope I’d see a little more of, as opposed to a pile of bitchy snark. And I’ll add another example that might support your point. Zach Charbonnet has 8 yards per carry, and 7 TDs, and he’s not so convinced that waiting in line for carries (that he didn’t get) was the best career move for him.

You couldn’t be more wrong. I don’t have a position on whether or not Cade should be pulled. I also don’t have a position on who should go in if they pull Cade. And I’m not so timid as to avoid telling you to fuck yourself and your condescending, thoroughly incorrect bullshit. I’m interested in the opinion of anyone who would like to address the issue of who should start for the remainder of the year. Grow up.

Who will be Jane's husband this year? Nothing against John, all he’s done is hold down the role and made her happy so far. However, I’m just wondering what peoples’ opinions are, regarding who will sleep with Jane in the future

After the first few years, I thought they might go to an open relationship. And when things were really hot, I thought John was pretty safe. Now, I’m less certain.

I don’t think a change would happen soon, if it did happen, and I’m definitely not trying to say that a change should happen.

So, if you think Harry down the block wins the job the night before their 50th anniversary, chime in. I like to hear peoples’ thoughts on how this will shake out.

It will be McNamara the whole way unless he gets hurt.

Harbaugh, I increasingly believe, is too motivated by his fear of the object between his QB's ears getting out of whack. Getting benched, throwing INTs, throwing more than a dozen passes in a game, throwing, you know, down the field more than five yards have all been things we haven't done (or done much of) in recent years. And it's hard to believe it's because none of the dozens of QBs Harbaugh has had cant' do it.

It seems like the running game is as much about protecting the QB's confidence as it is anything else.

If you’ve got the time, watch the video of Devin Gardner analyzing the offense against Rutgers.

It doesn’t answer your question exactly but it does provide great insider insight into what’s going on with specific plays, with side discussion about the two QBs.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a change this week if we're down a couple scores at halftime. Cade did take a pretty hard hit to the head and wasn't the same QB in second half so it's possible he doesn't even even play.

I'd like to see a few packages with JJ. Like we used McCaffrey around the goal line. But this team is built on running and defense and a solid OL. I'd stick w/Cade unless he starts having peeing in his pants moments like the stiff that backed up Devin before Shane came along.

I don't think there'd be a serious debate if he hadn't struggled with the whole O after halftime vs. Rutgers - which I'll give him the benefit of the doubt after the targeting nasty hit before halftime.

I think Uncle Rico might be available. How much you wanna make a bet he can throw a football over them mountains?? And back in ‘82 he used to be able to throw the pigskin a quarter mile!! Yeah... Coach woulda put him in the fourth quarter, they would've been state champions. No doubt. No doubt in my mind. That’s no small feat, just sayin

Auburns coach doesnt know who his QB is going to be this week! Said it in his presser today. They needed 78 offensive plays against Georgia State who is awful to score 20. We ran 54 plays vs Rutgers and had 20 by the half and didn't score again.

Auburn was trailing that miserable squad at the half by double digits and the offense scored 7 points in the last 30 minutes. Somehow that outfit almost won in a white out.

Who ever thought by week 5 we could somehow be ranked higher than OSU in the polls? How much fun will it be watching osu play at rutger if Michigan wins? The O/U in that game is 58 w osu favored by 15 so vegas thinks rutgers scores 21-24 pts

I don't know why everyone gets their panties in a bunch over this topic. It is the single most discussed "hot topic" regarding Michigan football in 2021 and it's not even close. It's a blog...so lets go back and forth and beat up the topic...because it's a blog...

Frankly I don't even know what I want. I'm shocked at how poorly Cade is playing. You have to look beyond the stats too...he's had to games (WA and RU) where he absolutely melted. The rutgers game was just odd. UM has had no home games and it seems like they have to be so delicate with Cade or he just falls apart. Yeah...the running game is great and I am not at all suggesting they throw 35 times a game but they should be able to coordinate 20-25 well executed pass plays (not necessarily all completions but plays where you have a shot).

It's just really concerning. I also don't know if you can throw JJ in @ wisconsin but hell...maybe you and maybe you should?

We are all happy and such but there is a real chance they could lose these next two away games. We've seen this show before...something has to change.
