What would get you back on the Harbaugh bandwagon?

Submitted by Erik_in_Dayton on December 21st, 2020 at 8:49 PM

Assuming that you want Jim Harbaugh fired (I realize that this isn't everyone) and assuming that he returns, what would make you change your mind about wanting a new coach? Would going 7-5 next year but seeming to be on an upswing do it? How about a 9-3 season with a blowout loss to OSU? Does Michigan need to go 12-0, riding to victory over a road of bones, to get you back in Harbaugh's camp? I'm interested to know what you see as necessary next season for Harbaugh to show that he should stay in AA.

Since the majority believes beating ohio is #1 priority ... then the AD and UM President need to be onboard with recruiting like ohio does.  Namely for 5* and highly regarded 4* players - 1) no classes other than online (don't worry - your grades will be fine),  2) yes you will be paid (again don't worry about the details).  3) oh is anyone is caught doing illegal activities - the player will only be suspended for games if the games are against inferior opponents.

High profile recruits are here to win football games ... that is their JOB !   The University will fully support them as long as they win ... and so does the B1G bosses.  And it is just that simple. (and ohio learned that from the SEC and Urbz).

Beat osu, but in general just look like your a top tier god damn football program. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be in the conference  mix every year, but we feel farrrrr from any of that talk.

When Alabama loses a game it usually takes the opponent to play out of their minds and catch a few breaks.... but in the end you know how good they always are, even in a loss.
Why in the hell can’t we even get to some semblance of that

Our losses are awful...the wins never look as good as they should.  Just pisses me off

So it’s going to take a lot for me. Lol

I started writing a long post with all kinds of measuring sticks and achievements only to erase it after realizing there was no way in hell Harbaugh would accomplish half of them.

I’m not sure anyone can do better but I’d rather find out and have hope than possibly be repeating the last few years and delaying the inevitable.

Bare minimum in order for me to say he deserves anymore time would be go into the OSU game with a chance to win the division and actually play a competitive game and have a legimate chance to win in the fourth. Would be bitter to lose again in that scenero but at least it would represent massive progress from the last couple of years. Obviously find a way to actually beat OSU and win the conference and I would 100% back in board, but the other scenero I would at least give him more time after that even if not fully back on board.

Execute at a high level on both sides of the ball and limit mental and physical mistakes. In other words, something resembling a disciplined football team.

Creative game plans and proper usage and understanding of the talent that is there.

QB development. RB rotation that makes sense.

A bend but don’t break defense that is good in the red zone. Or any kind of defensive identity. Be good at something!!

Clock freaking management.

A team that looks like they care and will fight you for every yard.

Realistically, we’ll be lucky to see half of this and struggle our way to 8-4, 7-5. I just don’t have confidence in Harbaugh regardless of who he has coaching with him on the sideline.

It's not specific game wins or championships per se.  What would get me back is simply seeing the Michigan players show pride again in running out on the field and playing hard for the program.  I want to see the return of the fire and intensity in every game for 4 quarters.  I want to see a team that won't quit and keeps fighting to the end, regardless of the outcome.  I want to be proud of the team and the way they compete.  I doubt I'll see that while Harbaugh is still here.

I want to see an attitude change.   Obvious burning desire to win from the head coach and I want that to come out through the team's efforts.  Lots of folks poked at "purple faced Brian Kelly", but at least it was clear he really wanted to win.

Sorry I’ve been off this train since the end of 16 and definitely by 17 with some huge coaching blunders by Jim. He would need to get to Indy and win in Indy for me to change my mind. There is so much proof of ineptness that he needs a complete 180 in one season to prove he still belongs in the job

-A full turnaround to recruiting solid players at every position

-Showing signs of a pulse on the sideline

-Actually going all in on a modern offense. This means Gattis being paired with a more seasoned OC

-Axing the entire defensive staff almost

-Hiring ace recruiters who know the south/Texas

-Beating teams he should beat, while also winning games as an underdog - namely, OSU at least once in the next 2 years

It's past time for that in my mind but if I had to answer what would get me back to think he is "the guy" for the program actually wouldn't be that much and is quite doable.

  1. 10 wins is always the floor. You must win 10. You will perpetually be in the top 5-12 and viewed as a top tier team if you always rack up 10 wins.
  2. Show up prepared to the games...all games...even the ones you lose. That doesn't mean they have to be perfect but they look like they didn't prepare 2-3 games a year. There is a whole lot of quit in Harbaughs teams.
  3. No blowouts...that should not happen or should be a once in three year fluky event

I think that covers it for me. As I've posted before Harbaugh has won 10, 10, 8, 10, 9, and 2 games. That should be, at a bare minimum, 11, 10, 10, 10, 10, and 4. Even if UM was still had a "0" in the win column against osu we'd be having a totally different conversation right now. We'd still be pissed but you'd have a team that spends a large bulk of the year in the top 10 and firmly in the 1b category of college football (behind the 1a of clemson/osu/alabama).

Like I said we'd still be all pissy about osu but this would feel completely differently. Michigan could have had the win total I posted literally by not shooting themselves in the foot, decent clock management, etc. It's not some sort of wild dream either I mean that still has them losing three games a year most years with the random 11 win season here and there.

I agree with most of what you wrote but no, being winless against ohio doesn't get mitigated by one more win against a random team.

The whole point of michigan football's season is to beat ohio.  Now, we have this stupid thing called the playoffs which many fans care about.  Still, at best that makes a national championship and a win over ohio a coin flip as to which is more important.

10 or 11 wins doesn't matter; a win over ohio is worth 7 other wins, at least.

In general we probably actually do agree my thinking was more "to get me back on board he needs to firmly plant UM in the 'Tier 1b' category". I don't mean that in a way to say I feel he is "the guy" forever but that would get me to the point I'd feel that I'm on board because UM is in striking distance.

UM isn't even in striking distance of anything right now. But I do actually agree with your sentiment.

Ohio State? How about winning a couple of games as an underdog or a Bowl game.

The number of games that have come as some version of a pleasant surprise (e.g. the last ND game, the 2018 "revenge tour") is vastly exceeded by the number of inexplicable coaching malpractice games. Even late career Lloyd Carr gave us more glimmer of hope events.

10 wins?  Does anyone really think we have a chance at 8 wins next season?  2-4 and would have been 2-6 or 2-7. Plenty of losses off the roster again but people think we’ll be a several wins better? Brutal schedule next season

This team was worse than the 3-9 Rich Rod team. Progress should be looked at as 6-7 wins.

What would it take for me?

1. A competent offense that can move the ball and score with any other high octane offense.

2. Recruit some legit DT's! Carr was negligent in this regard with safety's toward the end of his tenure but I would take that right now over not recruiting viable DT's, just complete negligence.

3. Win some games that UM is not favored in.

4. Win some bowl games.

5. Beat MSU, PSU and ND (when on schedule) the majority of the time.

6. Field a good defense, doesn't have to be great if the offense is good but needs to be able to get some stops without dying because of ill timed blitzes.

7. Stop playing so many walk ons, start relying on those young guys you recruited. Sure they will make mistakes, but you usually learn best by doing, not just watching.

8. Stop the flood of transfers out of the program. Not a good sign that players want out who have a legit chance to start or that would rather prepare for the possibility of the NFL than to play for you.

9. Beat OSU, would love to see 50% or higher but would settle for 1-2 out of every 4-5 games.

10. Be in the running for CFP and even make it in every 4-5 years. When you have a high % of upperclassmen there is no excuse for not getting in.

11. Have a recruiting plan! There shouldn't be glaring holes in the team after 6 years at the helm.

12. Hire competent coaches and recruiters.

Regardless of if its Harbaugh or another coach, these are my expectations for the coach at Michigan.

Win the games you're supposed to and maybe win a few you weren't supposed to, and put a competent Quarterback on the field.

I don't think OSU is "unbeatable" but with the current state of the programs, I do think expecting a Michigan win in the next couple years is unrealistic. But if the program appears to be building towards that and not getting the doors blown off in that game then that would be acceptable to me.

Beating osu, playing in the big ten championship game, or making the playoff would do it for everyone. This year was a train wreck, but it would be quickly filed into the fluke category if any of those three happen.

There is so much that needs to be addressed that I don't think Harbaugh can do all of it.  Not that, all together, it's insurmountable, but because he's as stubborn as both Schembechler and Carr ever were.  I don't think he's capable of changing the attitude in the locker room unless he gets back to being the aggressive, take no prisoners, 'what's your deal' coach he used to be - and I don't see that happening.  And honestly, I'm not sure I want to see that because I think it's an issue he deals with in his private life, and I don't want anyone's private life to fall apart.  That aside, here are some things I'd like to see...

  • He'll fix the defense the same way he did in 2016 - by finding the best DC available and letting him run it, so defense isn't really an issue for me because it'll be fine
  • He needs help with the offense; its inconsistent, janky, poorly prepared, and plays slow - and this ALL needs to be significantly improved
  • The team needs to have a sense of purpose for what they're going to do in each game, opponent specific, and fight their asses off to do those things relentlessly
  • Relentlessly attack the opponents weak spot for all 4 quarters
  • Use talented players in the ways that best suits their talent - why the hell did we see Chris Evans running between the tackles more often than we saw him run a route into a soft zone?  WTF?
  • Show some heart in road games - play hard, play to WIN (too often, they only play to not lose)
  • Show some heart in big games that seem unwinnable - play hard and play to win, with a sense of purpose (ie: don't give up because UW or OSU took a two-score lead - KEEP PLAYING HARD!)

I think we're stuck with Harbaugh in 2021, but if I can see this I'd be willing to watch another year in 2022.  But the truth is, I think we'll see some of this, some of the time.  And for me, that won't be good enough.

The 2006 OSU game was very close and still bothers me to this day.  To think we would be satisfied with something like that on a regular basis shows just how far things have fallen since then.  I don't care how OSU recruits, Michigan should never go in there expecting to lose, let alone being blown out.

Gob Wilson

December 22nd, 2020 at 12:41 PM ^

I would like to see the team focus on OSU every day for at least part of each practice. We have a big target but it seems that every year for the last 10+ years we do not seem at all prepared for OSU. I do not believe that was the way Michigan approached OSU from 1969-2000. The "play one game at a time" is fine for the NFL, but if you can work to beat the best you will be better off.

tybert

December 22nd, 2020 at 1:46 PM ^

Given how far we seem to have fallen in the last two years (blown out twice by UW, etc.) - assuming no changes to the current 2021 schedule.

Of course 12-0 and I'm OK!

(Maybe Dylan does come back)

It would take a 10-1 start with a nice 20+ win vs MSU, two night wins vs Washington and at Wisconsin. Maybe a close loss to PSU (unless we lose at UW and win at PSU).

So go into the OSU game and play 4 solids quarters against a team that clearly has 2X the talent and depth that we have right now. Maybe lose 23 20.

Then get a NY6 Bowl and kick Mullen's butt and rub it in with a late score and then pull off the combo of "what's your deal?" vs. Carroll and the back-slapping ala Schwartz. .

Plus show that the new recruits are making the team better for 2022+.

I think we are 3 years away from having a full roster to beat OSU - no matter the HC.

He could transform himself into something he is not, which he is not going to do, so nothing really.

He could become a better coach, or a better recruiter especially at QB, OT, DT and CB, or a better developer of talent, or a better politician in getting the administration to implement institutional changes if that is what is holding us back.  But at this point that would be like asking an orange to become an apple.  Is what it is.

His desire to coach the team for millions means nothing to me when the product he fields is embarrassing year after year.  Next year he will have his doors blown off by OSU again even after Fields leaves, and it will be the end regardless.

Dude is a great guy, a man of integrity and character, but just not the right squirrel to find the nut of Michigan level success in the game that is Big Ten college football.

Make the playoffs in 2021. That implies beating the buckeyes, then winning the B1G. Basically Run the Table!
