Big 10 "Re-Vote" Set for Tomorrow?

Submitted by DTOW on September 2nd, 2020 at 9:00 PM

I was hesitant to even post this as I originally saw it on Twitter from this Sir Yacht character but now some other sources are picking it up.  That said, there's some reporting that the Big 10 Presidents will hold a re-vote tomorrow to begin the season on October 10th.  9 yes votes are needed to pass it with schools being able to opt out.  Sounds like they may have the votes to pass it with Rutgers, Maryland, Illinois, and Northwestern opting out until the 2021 fall season.  Additionally, the reporting says there will be schedule changes, further safety measures in place, and potentially rapid tests being distributed to all athletes regardless of what sport they participate in.

Again, I have no idea how reputable this is but its out there with some smoke billowing.

I mean, this is a Michigan football/sports blog. I didn’t know that I had to state my thoughts on whether every specific activity, business or industry should be opened or not. If you want to give me a list, I’ll do the work for you and leave less for you to imply about me.

I’ll tell ya though, I’d love to go see my recently quadriplegic father for his 65th birthday but I personally don’t feel safe flying across the country to do so because of his very compromised immune system and while I’m saddened by it and annoyed by it, it seems I’m less so compared you and football.

totally agree with your decision re: not visiting your dad.  the exact decision i would make if my dad was still alive.  and he'd want to hear all about the game when it was played.

but the one decision doesn't impact the other, or only if the most freakish of circumstances would combine to let someone into his house that had played football and was infected, and was a transmitter, etc.

You my sir are amazingly smart! So much smarter than we deserve on this modest board. You in fact are so smart that in fact you’ve become an imbecile. I’m so sorry to tell you this because I’m sure you have a very high opinion of yourself. What we find in these extreme cases is it’s helpful for the imbecile to look in the mirror and repeat “it’s ok that I’m retarded” 3 times per day. Normally it takes 2-3 years before you’re completely normal but it’s worth the effort. Please do this for your family!

did comment about that.  not worried about that.  he's not worried about that.  and if it happens, it's a risk he was more than willing to take.  i have no reservations about his risk-taking in that regard.  in candor, there are some other risks he's taking i'm not so supportive about....

ty.  he's fine.  already working out as of last week.  he is at least the 5th family member (none in my house) to have it, and i've had a number of friends with either confirmed cases, or pretty certain.   i don't discount that it can be muy dangerous, but that danger is so closely associated with co-morbidities.

My two sources on the MHSAA told me that they actually thought Whitmer was going to lift the EO today. They have many in the state legislature on their side. They expect a decision by the end of the week. If that is the case, teams can start practice full pads Tuesday 09/09 and games could begin as early as 09/18.

It annoys the ever living hell out of me that people are quoting AD’s, coaches and players, trump calling Kevin Warren etc. when it comes down to the PRESIDENTS of the universities. If they were going to take a different approach, it would have been before the cases at NC state, Oklahoma, Iowa and so many more.  I want to watch Michigan play as much as any fan on the planet, but there are just so many case-in-point examples in real time why it isn’t feasible. Sigh.

Brendan, your statements about Covid simply aren't true.

Daily case count is about where it was at the end of June; well below most of July, but much higher than March, April, May or most of June. (Source: Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center). Obviously there's far more testing now than there was in March; I'm referring to known/documented cases.

US Hospitalizations are significantly lower than July or most of April/May, but higher than most of June and WAY higher than March. (Source: The Covid Tracking Project).

Trends seem to be slowly improving, but we're a long way from good - or March, for that matter.

It's completely feasible.  You just have to send all the other students home and turn each campus into its own mini-bubble.

And before someone gets all high and mighty with their "education >>> sports" argument, virtual learning is a completely reasonable and safe alternative to in-person classes.  Football has no such alternative.  So yes, you can have both quality education and football.

But if it’s feasible, who’s pearls will the Impaler clutch then??  Not like 3 other conferences have found a way and are still testing well....oh wait they totally are.   It’s semi embarrassing that more fans are not vocal about wanting to see UM play.

It's a reasonable alternative for some majors, but not all. I'm in the school of kinesiology and would really prefer that my biomechanics lab isn't moved to online, so that I can actually, you know, study biomechanics. Just like I'm sure most people would prefer their future doctors didn't do all of their residency in a fucking zoom call. I would hope the best public university in America would honor their commitment to providing the best education ahead of trying to play ten weeks of a game that just makes everyone pissed off anyway

Unless the Big Ten (or PAC 12) presidents/ADs admit it is strictly about the revenue, I don't see them as supporting a shutdown of campuses just to have a single extracurricular student group meet (varsity football) while not allowing all other student groups/sports to do the same.  Poor optics and there would be a strong push back from other sectors of the university community.

I don't think you need to send all the other students home.  You could, but I don't think it's necessary.

You just have to have a non-sensational approach to the virus.  Test players regularly, and remove players who are positive from the active roster, as you would an injured player.  Play the guys who test negative.  Maybe you lose your QB or some other important player for awhile.  C'est la vie.

The real hurdle is that we can't let go of sensationalism and freak out over every infection, even though we are talking about a cohort of the population that is statistically at very low risk.

When these rumors come from a more reliable--or even recognizable--source, or preferably the B1G itself, I'll pay attention.  Until then, I'm holding out no hope for a season given the decision already made by the presidents.

They are saying he’s a fraud because he’s conservative and a Michigan fan which is barely tolerated by a bunch of mostly 20 somethings on this once great message board.

His show is gaining traction and viewers on YouTube which probably angers many that don’t agree with him.

There we go I said it. Let the downvotes pour in.
