OT How Do Explain The Spartys As 16 Point Favorites
November 5th, 2019 at 2:14 PM ^
In fairness I'm not sure how to think about this game. Illinois is weird man....msu is weird man. I could see anything from 28-10 IL, 28-10 MSU, 10-3 msu, or 10-3 IL.
16 pt favorite seems odd but while there is no faith in msu I think there is even less in IL.

FWIW the line is down to -14.5 at Bovada right now. Seems like the betting community agrees 16 is too many points.
Also, whenever a line is that weird (like this past weekend's Seattle/Tampa Bay line) that it looks like it's just begging you to bet one side I've almost always gone the other way and won.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:40 PM ^
Yep, wise guys were all on Tampa Bay and it seemed weird and I bet it and won which didn't seem weird.
November 5th, 2019 at 4:33 PM ^
does the 3 points for home field change when tickets are selling for under 7 dollars?
November 5th, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
I'm the same way. But I'm kinda feeling MSU in this one.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:16 PM ^
Sorry to highjack your thread, but not really..... I just refuse make an urban meyer thread.
Cinci's AD is slated to become the next AD at USC, but is rumored to be considering backing out because he was told he would not be allowed to hire Urban... LOL
November 5th, 2019 at 2:40 PM ^
USC might avoid Meyer because of the controversy surrounding him? I would've have pegged USC for an institution that would set aside morals and ethics if it meant more Ws. Who knew?
November 5th, 2019 at 2:51 PM ^
Actually USC is a lot more like Michigan than people think. Considered out there to be the BMW-driving arrogant types. Plus it's a private school. They may have some scruples.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:16 PM ^
"Actually USC is a lot more like Michigan than people think."
There is a lot wrong with this statement. Having familiarity with both, they are VERY different institutions.
November 5th, 2019 at 4:00 PM ^
Having degrees from both, I would heartily agree!
November 6th, 2019 at 2:38 PM ^
This claim is spurious. Michigan = Porsche driving arrogant types. And it's a Public school.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:41 PM ^
Sweet! So you're saying he'll be available to coach UM next season?
Edit: I thought the .gif was self-explanatory...this is /s
November 5th, 2019 at 2:51 PM ^
Oakland's still in play.
November 5th, 2019 at 4:26 PM ^
I think the best thing Michigan fans can hope for is Meyer goes to Florida State as unlikely as it seems. If he recruits as well as he always does, I imagine OSU would lose kids to FSU more than they would to a Meyer-led USC.
November 6th, 2019 at 10:14 AM ^
I think the best thing we can hope for is that he gets hired by the Jets and is publicly humiliated by Belichick twice a year.
November 5th, 2019 at 11:18 PM ^
Meyer at USC would be dangerous. He would make the playoff year 1. SC has tons of offensive talent and the Pac 12 blows. Oregon and Utah are slightly above average Big Ten teams. In the Pac 12, they’re dominant.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:17 PM ^
Vegas making the betting more even?
November 5th, 2019 at 2:20 PM ^
I have a pretty active imagination, but I can't even guess how they'll score 16 points at all..
November 5th, 2019 at 2:20 PM ^
Basketball team? Yes. Football? Not a chance.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:21 PM ^
The idea is to draw bets.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:38 PM ^
But it opened at Staee -11.5 not the current 14-16 people are seeing.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:49 PM ^
Yes, and I would personally expect Illinois to play MSU tough. I don't really know how MSU fans or the general public tend to vote where their team is concerned, do you? A certain rather lazy line of thought has them as a 'tough' team, one that pulls out gutty wins, etc. And Illinois drags around a rep as a long-time patsy.
I always think recent history haunts betting in a way that you want to ignore if you are a serious bettor. I am not.
November 5th, 2019 at 6:58 PM ^
The idea is to draw bets that will earn Vegas money. If a bazillion people bet on Illinois to cover and they do how does that help Vegas?
November 5th, 2019 at 2:22 PM ^
Tangential question. On the Monday podcast I think I heard Brian or Ace say Lewereke is out. Is he injured, was he just benched in the last game? I wasn’t quite sure how to interpret the dialog or if I misheard it. Couldn’t find anything online either.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:24 PM ^
Players at MSU do not know whether they are injured or not until after the game when the coach decides if they were.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:25 PM ^
I think they just keep pulling him for Lombardi and whoever the third string guy is because they're all playing like crap. It sounded like they rotated through them all and BACK to lewerke in their last game.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:28 PM ^
I believe that was the case. I expect to see all three again on the 16th.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:55 PM ^
And did it over the course of just a few plays. Was nigh on to complete coaching malfeasance and Damntonio just more or less punted when he was asked. Guy doesn't appear to give that much of a crap at this stage, just trying to make it to January.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:29 PM ^
Maybe Brandon Peters transferred to MSU this past weekend?!
November 5th, 2019 at 2:33 PM ^
They're now without their starting center and #1 WR to go with best defensive player in Bachie. Also lost depth at LB and RB due to transfers, and have had a ton of injuries on the O line.
Illinois 16 MSU 13
November 5th, 2019 at 2:40 PM ^
More points than fans in attendance
November 5th, 2019 at 2:46 PM ^
Is that some type of Rutger?
November 5th, 2019 at 2:53 PM ^
Yes. Michigan recorded an Attendance Rutger in 2016 after their 78-0 win.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:24 PM ^
At kickoff that stadium was packed.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:38 PM ^
The only way that could happen is if Illinois scored negative 11 points
November 5th, 2019 at 2:40 PM ^
I saw that as odd as well but it's not that unreasonable, Sagarin has MSU as a 81 rating, Illinois as a 67, so with the 3 pt for home field, the line would probably start around 17. MSU gets some credit for beating IU in the model, along with playing the 2'nd toughest schedule. I think Illinois is underrated as well in this game.
November 5th, 2019 at 5:12 PM ^
Here is the link to Sagarin in case anyone is curious:
https://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/2019/team/
It is very odd to me that Sagarin has Illinois rated so much lower than MSU. They both have 4 losses, and Illinois has by far the better win (Wisconsin). I wonder if the preseason expectations are still weighted in the model.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:43 PM ^
Would you bet a Popeye's chicken sandwich?
November 5th, 2019 at 3:06 PM ^
I'd kill for a Popeyes chicken sandwich.
...Almost
November 5th, 2019 at 5:59 PM ^
You wouldn't be the first
November 5th, 2019 at 4:28 PM ^
Only if you bring your own bun!
November 5th, 2019 at 3:05 PM ^
Of all the games this week, this is the one you want to talk about?
I would much rather talk PSU-Minnesota, Iowa-Wisconsin, or LSU-Alabama. A lot of great games to watch this bye week.
Another factor for the next week: it is going to be unseasonably cold, especially in Big Ten games. Not sure it will play a role into games, but I guess we will see.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:53 PM ^
Uh..they are our next opponent and a big rival.
November 5th, 2019 at 4:25 PM ^
It's about the Line and not the Game.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:39 PM ^
I can't explain it so I bet it, got Illinois +15. I wasn't able to bet it down to +14.5 unfortunately.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:44 PM ^
Illinois is wicked inconsistent.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:49 PM ^
Are we sure that's not the MSU Over/Under at 16 points?
November 5th, 2019 at 3:52 PM ^
Why do you care?
November 5th, 2019 at 4:06 PM ^
Idk, Vegas usually does really well with their spreads, but this one seems pretty favorable for Illinois over a large sample size
November 5th, 2019 at 4:07 PM ^
I think there's some recency bias with MSU because they had to play arguably the three best teams in the conference in consecutive weeks. They've taken care of business against bad teams and Illinois is a bad team.
