Sony has announced it's shutting down PSVue the end of January...what are the best alternatives?
October 29th, 2019 at 4:41 PM ^
Not playing video games.
October 29th, 2019 at 4:42 PM ^
Not sure how that relates to streaming TV, but ok.
October 29th, 2019 at 4:43 PM ^
PSVue is Sony's streaming tv service. If you're going to be an ass you might want to know what you are actually commenting on.
As far as the OP's question probably YoutubeTV is your best bet.

Woooboy...glad points don't work

Yeah or you could just comment on things you're actually informed about next time.

I'll punish myself appropriately.

You could edit your comment and then make all the people responding look like real a-holes.

Or...you could try playing video games. Some of them are actually really fun. On Playstation 4, I would highly recommend the new God of War game, Spider-man, and The Witcher 3. I have cut back on the number of shows I watch to about 4 on Hulu and have not really missed any of the other programs, and my dad and I watch Michigan games together at his house. The only downside is waiting until the kids are in bed before I get to play.

My 14 year old is running Smash Bros tournaments and has kids from around the country (and two global). They keep asking him to charge entry fees and pay out half.
He also pays $10/mo for a video streaming service. One of his buddies pays $5/mo to use his log in. Another kid, who doesn’t know the first, also pays $5.
Wont be long until this kid is making some bank...

Won’t be long until mine is in juvie.

Still having a ton of fun ruining kids days in Fortnite

Or this, the notion some people have that adults don't play games is insane. The average age of gamers is actually 35 or something.
October 30th, 2019 at 12:04 PM ^
Witcher 3... probably the most "titty" this guy has seen in ages.

Clean up afterwards.

This highlights the single worst marketing mistake Sony made with this service. People associated the name with gaming and/or their gaming console.
I had PSVue for a couple years as they had the highest quality and most 60 fps content at the time. Ultimately went with YoutubeTV as soon as it was offered in my location, as they offered 100% 60 fps content and their UI was light years ahead of the rest.

I believe that for a while the choices of devices to watch PlayStation Vue on was terrible. I believe that for a while you had to have a PlayStation to set up a PlayStation Vue account. If that had not been a requirement at any point in time I would have had PlayStation Vue. Instead that kind of turned me off and I ended up with YouTube TV eventually.

Yes! My post had a purpose. Please save me from Bolivia.

That sucks, I use it and really like it, seems like one of the top non-cable options for sports and the infinite DVR is awesome. Anyone have another service they like?
October 29th, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
I'm also upset, been using it for years now. The DVR can be a bit wonky but the streaming quality, breadth of sports channels, and the ability have a 5+ streams going at once was hard to beat.
YouTube TV seems to be the next best thing based on my quick search. Hear the DVR is very good, offers a good amount of channels, and the UI isn't a mess like Hulu TV apparently is.
October 29th, 2019 at 5:05 PM ^
I've had YouTubeTV for about 2 years now and really like it. Very reasonably priced, loaded with sports channels (I'm a Mich grad living in Cleveland and have not missed one game of any team I give a shit about) and unlimited DVR recording.
It's funny too that somehow I'm able to record programs that air on channels we dont even get a day or so after the initial network broadcast. How that sorcery is done is beyond my pea-brain knowledge but I love it!

I assume the YouTube TV DVR is cloud-based? Does content age-out (e.g. after 90 days it is removed)? Is there any way to pull it down to a local/home server for indefinite storage (e.g. Plex)? Some regular YouTube content can be grabbed in the same way, but might be throttled in terms video quality/resolution.
October 29th, 2019 at 5:38 PM ^
YTV DVR is cloud based. You can't pull it to a local server to my knowledge. You can have six users on an account (but only 3 simultaneous streams). Each user gets unlimited DVR storage but some content will disappear over time (not necessarily 90 days and not all content).
October 29th, 2019 at 5:41 PM ^
It is cloud based. One thing is that if it’s available on demand you get that (with commercials) instead of the dvr version. So if you are catching up on a network show 3 weeks late you are going to have to deal with a couple commercial breaks.
youtube tv is great though
October 29th, 2019 at 7:47 PM ^
Does the DVR function like a real DVR (e.g., skipping commercials) or can you only fast forward the program?
October 29th, 2019 at 5:23 PM ^
I initially liked PSVue for channel selection and price, but the guide flat out sucked and I ended up having some streaming issues. I switched to YouTubeTV and have loved it. No streaming issues on any of my devices. I was able to tune into the ND game with ease Saturday to check scores while at a concert.
October 29th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
Are you able to pause/rewind/slo-mo while streaming or watching off the DVR?
October 30th, 2019 at 8:12 AM ^
Sure do....I've used playstation vue for a couple of years but didn't like the fact you couldn't really watch it after you left your zone. I moved over to YouTube Tv and for 50/month its great. Unlimited DVR, you can watch shows from the beginning at any time. Sports are plenty. I can watch just about anything. Recently spent a week in the Everglades and was able to watch local Detroit TV down there. You just change the zip code you're in and you get local TV too. Really happy with it.
October 30th, 2019 at 9:55 AM ^
Hands down YouTube TV. You also get YouTube Red with it which means no ads in YouTube videos. Unlimited DVR and up to 5 accounts per subscription (3 can be in use at the same time)
October 30th, 2019 at 8:57 PM ^
YTTV is better that PSVue by quite a bit imo.
I had PSVue for maybe year and a half, they took off NESN (New England Sports Network) and I dumped them.
Turns out YTTV has a way better DVR system with more reliable controls and the picture is better.
I used to record UM games on Vue and go to watch around mid-game, and tell it to start from the beginning and it never would, I would see the score and be pissed.
No such problems with YTTV.

Type in “streaming services”.

I did, but I just got a bunch of videos of people peeing on each other.

Youtube TV has been rock solid for me. Offers so many sports channels, unlimited DVR, and up to three streams
October 29th, 2019 at 4:44 PM ^
Thanks leaning towards this...sucks having to change all my roku app logins
October 29th, 2019 at 4:52 PM ^
I use it too. It’s been fantastic.
October 29th, 2019 at 4:52 PM ^
Seconded -- I signed up this fall and have been very happy thus far. A little pricier than other options, but worth it. Especially if you're like me where you care about TV for certain parts of the year (i.e. Football) and can then cancel it for months at a time when not using.
Tried Hulu TV - it sucks, don't do it!
October 29th, 2019 at 5:06 PM ^
What were your problems with Hulu TV? Just curious because I’ve used it for over a year now and have had a great experience.
October 29th, 2019 at 5:45 PM ^
Yep, been using Hulu TV for around a year now. Zero issues.
October 29th, 2019 at 6:25 PM ^
Hulu might be cheaper but they charge you for ad-free DVR and then the thing still has ads. Also, the layout and UI of Hulu TV is not very good. If you want to see what else is on or a guide you also have to stop what you’re watching (not so on YouTube).
October 29th, 2019 at 4:53 PM ^
YouTube TV paired with a Roku stick has been great for me.
October 29th, 2019 at 4:56 PM ^
Agreed. I’ve had Youtube TV for about 6 months now and absolutely love it. Run it through the app on my Apple TV. Haven’t had a single issue with buffering or a drop in quality. On a 1-10 scale I’d give it a solid 8.7 only because it doesn’t have NFL Network and I have to run HBO through a separate app.
October 29th, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
I’d try it if you gave it an 8.8 but no way if it’s only an 8.7.
October 30th, 2019 at 10:16 AM ^
My one problem with YouTube TV is that you can't add NFL RedZone for $10 like you can with PSVue. Other than that, I have had no complaints.
