Alex Morgan with the hat trick now! 8-0 and counting... This team is on a mission, but I don’t think Thailand is a very serious competitor.
Just lulling the US team into a false sense of security. Thailand team lying in the weeds... Mork would be proud, but would need to teach them, the power of disrespek
Make that 10-0 and counting... Rapinoe and Morgan tally the next two
Love it! At a certain point, might hear some sportsmanship jeers which I get (could just pass the ball around or put in some more subs, how many subs can you put in the game in soccer?).
However, if this were football vs Ohio State, pour it on them. Gimme another 10 touchdowns.
Hopefully they can keep this momentum up past group play!
Goal differential is a tiebreaker. As highly unlikely that scoring this many goals would result in them losing a GD tiebreaker, you don't pull back, especially in professional sports.
Yeah...the U.S. is not going to need 13 goals for a GD tiebreaker... Teams pull back in professional sports all the time. Teams run out the clock, take out their best players, etc.
If the game ended up 6-0 or 7-0 you would have a point.
Great teams run up the score.
By that logic, none of Beilein's teams were great then :/
https://studybreaks.com/culture/running-score-sports/
Again, if this were Michigan Football vs. Ohio State. Run up the score and make them say "Daddy". I would love that. But say its 48-0 in the middle of the 4th against Army, I'd say put in some second stringers, run the ball, etc.
62-39...
As I said it's incredibly unlikely. This (13) is the most goals scored by a team in a women's world cup game.
But that doesn't mean that Sweden can't come out and put 14 up against Thailand. The US could theoretically tie with both Chile and Sweden and then end up losing a GD against Sweden. This scenario is incredibly improbable, but things happen in sports.
If you saw the brief post coverage, the only person who took issue with the 13 goals was the host (a non professional athlete). All the other former players said you never stop playing no matter the score.
TBH I didn't watch the game, just shocked by the score. You made good points and as a player, I can't imagine I'd want to pull back either. That would be awesome to see all your teammates score.
Thailand is terrible. Sweden will blow them out, and Chile might too. It's easily possible that the top 3 teams in the group end up 2-1, so GD is a big deal.
The other teams in their group will also roll Thailand. You can’t take any chances, crazy things can happen.
You shouldn't have been downvoted. It's exactly what you do. Sweden is fully capable of doing the same to Thailand. First goal is to get out of group play and second goal is to win it your group.
Weren't we tossing heaters to Ronnie Bell while up on Nebraska 49-3? I was fine with that, in case anyone wondered.
I was completely fine with that as well. Ronnie Bell was a freshman and needed to give him all the experience we could get before stronger opponents.
Where do you draw the line then? If he was a sophomore is it still ok? What if we were up 70-3? I'm asking this as a hypothetical and not as a direct attack on you btw.
But there is no reason to stop playing. You can obliterate teams while still playing with sportsmanship, so long as you aren't showing people up and embarrassing them in ways unrelated to the game.
As a side note, this is why some of the 'unwritten rules' of baseball are so stupid. For example, not stealing or bunting when you are up by X number of runs. Big comebacks happen all the time. You should stop trying to win the game to avoid hurting somebody's feelings?
I totally get that, I'm with you. I would say the line is where a game is 99.99% likely that you will win. Say it was 49-3 with 5 min left in the 4th. It's almost impossible just due to time for a team to come back and win the game. I would say you put in your subs at that point and let them have 1-2 drives. Don't necessarily have to run the ball exclusively.
In this case, I don't think Bell was "technically" a starter and inexperienced so to me thats ok. But like throwing bombs to Nico or DPJ with 5 min left up 46, eh.
I guess now that I think about it, it's less about sportsmanship to me and more about preventing injuries/getting experience for younger players.
For example, that Rutgers game like 2 years ago where we won something ridiculous like 79-0, I believe we had our 2nd and 3 stringers out there pretty early, but we just kept scoring haha. I'm cool with that.
they are only allowed 3 subs.
Also american football doesn't have a pt differential as part of the calculus to determine who advances.
your arguments are therefore complete bullshit
Dooooouble Post.
FIFA rules allow for a maximum of three subs in regulation, plus a fourth in extra time; so you can't just sub out your entire starting side should the score get extremely lopsided as a gesture of "sportsmanship".
The US showed sportsmanship by giving Thailand the respect entitled to any World Cup opponent by giving them their best effort for 90 minutes. If Thailand doesn't want to get blown out, play harder.
This post-game narrative of the US showing bad sportsmanship is bullshit. They're in France to win the World Cup and every minute they're working on their game will serve to benefit them down the line. You can't just throw away minutes passing the ball around midfield, running down the clock. Mallory Pugh should be denied the chance to score her first goal in World Cup play simply because the US had a huge lead? Stop it.
The US showed respect to Thailand by never letting up for a second; if that grates on some of them, then they can only look in the mirror for whom to blame.
12-0, a women’s World Cup record for goals, and counting...
(5 by Morgan)
Seriously
So basically there are too many teams in the World Cup. This kind of result really shouldn’t happen at this level.
Womens Hockey disagrees. Soccer is actually more competitive at this level than most womens team sports are
Edit: I meant in terms of sports we care about in north america. I am sure rugby, volleyball and rowing are quite competitive but I cant be bothered to google
Rugby is dominated by a few teams, with a bunch of scrubs too.
Ummm...I just turned to Fox and saw this...what. thee. fuck.
I hope the bench was cleared and has been playing since oh I dunno, 6-0.
Alex Morgan, a measly 5 goals, eh? Wow.
I assume the women only get 3 subs as well like the men do.
Touché! I knew that too, score was such a shock to the brain it farted that comment!
In soccer they only get three substitutions during the match, so nope.
Yea I'm dumb and knew that! Derp
13-0 final. USA made a serous statement today. Well played ladies!
Not impressed. They did in a full game what Auburn did in one inning.
Mckayla - welcome to MGoBlog!
Edit - looks like I got beat to the punch with the final score. Great win ladies!
missed extra point gonna cost them in the end.
side note, interesting that womens intnl football is a thing - seems like it came out of nowhere. wouldn't expect Thai to end have a team but what do i know
Women’s World Cup started in 1991...not like it’s a new thing.
Their football federations are not nearly as supportive as they are of men, which is no surprise. The Argentine team slept in the bus when they got to France. Then went on to draw one of the two teams to be a finalist in the last two world cups. Their first point in World Cup history.
Wow, that's one hell of a drive!
Thailand is the only team in the women’s World Cup that has looked outpaced so far. Argentina, Chile, South Africa and Cameroon all held their own against solid teams IMO. Even Jamaica and Nigeria looked ok.
People were afraid quality would drop a ton with an expansion for the women’s World Cup. I think they could go to 32 teams in 2027.
Yeesh no thanks.
That also goes for expanding the men’s side too.
Honestly they could have scored 20.
Refs were ignoring clear Thailand fouls from the start out of pity and I kind of don't blame them.
I was a bit surprised that they didn't call off the dogs more out of self preservation. You embarrass a team that badly and you're likely to be on the wrong end of some very heavy challenges.
An outrageous wealth of goal scoring.
Garbage game.
If you are a Thai national, maybe. For me, it was fun to watch.
This. It had all the makings of U of M vs Delaware State.
That was savage.
Wolverine-with-a-goat-head-in-its-mouth savage.
Meanwhile the US men’s team is a total disaster.....
blow them up, give all the money to the women’s side. The sham has gone on long enough. US women = source of national pride. US Men’s soccer = tire fire.
