Game of Thrones, episode 4

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on May 5th, 2019 at 8:19 PM

The Night King is dead, and pretty much everyone else survived, so now what?

Rewatching episode 3 at the moment, still can't see a damn thing.

I don't watch Game of Thrones, but the great Michigan Man Rich Eisen was on Billions tonight! He got to showcase some of his wonderful humor, as well. I don't watch much scripted television. I'm basically a news, sports, true crime kinda guy. But... I'm a big Paul Giamatti fan, and when Billions started a few years back, I tuned right in. It's a great show!

Also, sorry about the thread hijack, but for some reason this points glitch will continue forever and I won't be able to get enough points to start threads.

If you like both Billions and Game of Thrones, AND if you get Showtime on demand with your cable provider, then you can watch the latest episode of Billions on Sunday morning.

I've been watching the latest episode of Billions on Sunday morning before the EPL matches begin on the NBC Sports Network, so I can save Sunday night viewing at 9:00 PM for Game of Thrones.

Because Dani and all her advisers and lieutenants apparently forgot about Euron Greyjoy's fleet when devising a battle plan. Also apparently forgetting about the giant crossbows.

Also Cersei had Dani within firing range and didn't take the shot. Since when has Cersei cared about fighting with honor. She blew up the whole Scepter while it was packed full for a trial.

Worst part of the episode, Jon didn't pet his dog goodbye! That dog has saved his life multiple times and is the perfect definition of a "good boy". Jon lack of intelligence in battle planning is only matched by his lack of a heart.

The fact that Euron could see and hit the dragons without them seeing that entire fleet from in the air was pretty ridiculous but the element of shock and surprise plays better on TV. I guess.  I'm more annoyed that they would have gone down there without considering an ambush.  And then Dany doesn't even call out Tyrion for the lack of foresight after already being upset with him.  You have one job!

As others have mentioned, I don't have a problem with Cersei not taking the shot there.  1) Dany and Jon are much smaller targets than a Dragon so odds of hitting them were very small 2) killing Dany isn't like killing the Night King.  They still have the full armies and the dragon and because of that 3) the purpose was to put them on tilt and do something dumb.  Get Dany to bring the dragon into range and get Greyworm to go on a suicide mission.

That scene was vintage GoT with all the layers (and brutality too).

Uhh, sorry about the 2nd hijack of this thread. But, could someone please start a thread about our fine football team's trip to South Africa? Maybe it's become old hat around here, but I still get a thrill out of knowing the university that we love provides for the football program's student-athletes to become well-rounded citizens of the world.

I have to believe she’s still getting what’s coming to her, but hard not to see that everything is going Cersei’s way right now.

-Northern and Targaryen forces are decimated after Battle of Winterfell.

-Targaryen Fleet is further decimated after tonight.

-Two of three dragons are dead

-Sansa and Arya look like they are ready to backstab Dany in a big way. Northerners fighting amongst themselves, and wouldn’t be surprised to see Sansa hold the remaining northern forces and KotV back from heading down to King’s Landing

-Mad Queen mode looks to be on full standby right now.

-The only other person in this world that Danny trusts fully is dead.

—-

This war will not end conventionally. Jon and Dany’s remaining forces will not overpower the Golden Company on their own. Someone else unexpected will have to join the frey (Second Sons? New Army of the Dead? Yara? Dorne, if there’s anything left of it?). Should be a wild ride these next two weeks.

Right after Jon told Dany of his true lineage I was convinced that she is going to kill him somehow.  There is no way she stands aside and allows Jon to take the throne.  No chance.  She has been fighting for it her entire life.

Very very interesting stuff with Varys in this episode.  I'm curious if he tries to get her assassinated at some point but fails/is found out and summarily executed.

Disappointed in this season. Such a build up about ‘Winter is coming’ and they kill the Night King in one episode just to spend some teenage drama time with Sansa and Daenerys.

The writing just seems like crap. You are flying on a dragon - you apparently fly close enough to be in arrow range and they land two perfect shots?

Just seems that no matter what, this show will end on a craptastic episode.

Yeah, I've thought about this a lot.  While significant armor would be heavy for a flying creatures, you'd think they'd put something around their chest and neck.

That said, not sure how thick armor would have to be stop those crossbows from doing a lot of damage.  Remember, regular armor is meant to prevent arrows and spears and swords that hit with limited force (much lower massxacceleration).  Anything that has the force to do damage to a dragon probably isn't going to be stopped by armor thin enough to also fly with.  We should get super nerdy and have a physics person figure this out.  Maybe submit it to myth busters.  How thick does armor have to be and then how heavy would that armor be?

Poor Tormund, though at least he'll have plenty of elbow room north of the North. And poor Gendry, though at least he got made a lord, though Dany or AeJon still have to win. And poor Ser Brienne - Jaime's going back south. And poor dragon, whose mother doesn't understand aerial reconnaissance.

Dany sees how the people feel about AeJon, but he can't keep a fucking secret, even if his queen wants him to. Actually, turns out he's not the only one who can't keep a secret.

Interesting that Varys and Tyrion could be at odds.

I'd be interested in the further tales of the Faceless Lady and the Hound. But they have unfinished business.

I'm convinced the whole Night King, ice zombies were the producers selling the show to HBO 12 years ago.  The Night King isn't in the books.  The King North of the wall is

Producers: Hey we have this fantasy political drama, ultra violent with dragons.  Super duper expensive, huge cast, lots of locations

HBO; pass.  Looking something more with zombies, like Walking Dead ish

Producers;  Oh Uh Did I mention Ice Zombies?

Remember how popular zombies were when this show was pitched.  I'm betting they were the sweetener to get this show made

In the post-episode discussion, D&D said that Danny “forgot” about Euron’s fleet. Like, really? That’s the best that Hollywood can come up with for the most popular, expensive show in the world?

This show is still entertaining because I’ve invested so much time over the last several years into the story and the characters. But the writing once they got past the books has been so comically bad.

My mind is blown that those two guys after the show have so much influence in the creative process. They are two very average guys, nothing exceptional about either. They needed the books to guide them, and without it any fan fiction would be just as good. No better.

Right!!  That was strike 3 for Jon - I hope he dies a horrible death now.  He's dumb as a box of rocks, forsook his family for crazy-ass blonde tail, and is squandering the armies that follow him blindly.  Did I mention his three faults?  1) man bun; 2) he quit against the frozen dragon - just plain up quit; 3) ignored the dog he grew up with, and that saved his life.

Fuck Jon Snow.

Yeah...  Okay, the writing is starting to get to me.  How did she not see a dozen warships in that bright, clear sky?  Not to mention the rest of her fleet's lookouts!  And how were they so good at shooting those things?  I mean, AA fire in WWII was a 'hope the best if you even get close' kind of deal.  Yet, these guys are shooting arrows!  BTW, how did the huge crossbows move so smoothly?

If I were Cercei, I'd be straight up pissed that only Missendrae was captured - an entire ship was sunk and abandoned, and all of its survivors washed on on the beaches of the Red Keep!

Can Arya just end this, please...
