NY Times Reporting on MSU Assault Case

Michigan State Discouraged Reporting of Rape Allegation Against Athletes, Woman Says
"It was not until October, after months of erratic behavior, that Ms. Kowalski told her parents that she had been raped by three Michigan State basketball players that April. The incident left her depressed and considering harming herself. She dropped out of college for a while and received counseling. She gave up sports journalism for good."
Lansing State Journal has been thinking about writing about this for years, just hadn't got around to it yet. Lots of Tom Izzo press conferences they had to cover before wrapping this one up and publishing.
It's important to start Izzo's healing process. Poor Tom has been through so much.
FUCK tiny tom!!!
And their delusional JoePa worshiping fanbase

Way worse than our W/L record during the Hoke years was the Gibbons and Lewan disaster. MSU is the scum of the earth but no university, including us is immune.
We definitely didn't handle that well, but finally (after the Title IX revisions) Gibbons was expelled, and RichRod/Hoke/Brandon all lost their jobs (not specifically over this, but nevertheless).
Izzo's still roaming the sidelines and the alleged perpetrators of these multiple incidents have gotten off.

We definitely didn’t handle it welI, I hope we have learned from it and I trust we have. At this point I don’t think they will fire Izzo regardless of what he does and that’s a shame. The coach in AZ still has a job and they have him on tape...
It’s important to point out that the MSU police that investigated the Appling/Payne rape accusation recommended prosecution. The police DP that investigated Gibbons did not feel it warranted charges. Important difference.

But you don't see or hear any of us maligning the victims like they are doing over on RCMB. Even OJ and his friends are dismayed with the Sparty faithful...

Yup. Lansing media sure swept this one under the rug.
Not expecting someone who lives out of the market to monitor Lansing media, but at least use the Google before posting something like that. The LSJ, WLNS and WILX have been running stories on MSU handling of sex assault cases for years. No one cared until the Nassar story went national.

I wish this brave young woman and her family all the best, thoughts and prayers to keep them strong as the sparty fanbase will start the character assaults any minute now. To think she's still on campus and is coming out publicly is incredibly brave. I fear we will see the worst of that horrible fan base and college.
Horrible. So I guess the next time I see MSU players with sick kids being "mentors", I'll know who was involved.
Glad The NY Times is investigating. Certainly know that no Lansing or Detroit reporters will touch this.
Very sad indeed. ESPN has been on this for a long time too. We'll see what happens.
It is sad how the local media acts like the PR wing of the university, which I am sure will circle the wagons here again.
half the people reading that headline will think its us/our school, that is how little the world cares about little brother.
on another note, i wouldn't want to unfairly name anyone with such a dramatic charge, but i am certainly curious who the unnamed assailants were.
Its been rumored for a few years that two of the alleged assailants are Valentine and Forbes.
I'm confused, isn't this story sort of new? I remember the Payne/Appling rumors, but that was easier to know about because there were official reports and stuff.
But Ernie Johnson told me Tom Izzo is nothing but class...
Is this a new story? There are so many involving State that my head spins. Also: for those of us over our limit at the Times could someone give a precis?
The new part is that the victim has come out publicly now instead of suing as a Jane Doe. It is the story about the student who was advised by MSU's counselors to not report the rape since the alleged perpetrators were basketball players ("big fish").
I believe this is the Appling/Payne story.
But that victim already told her story on OTL. Besides that involved 2 players not 3
Appling/Payne was their freshman year (2010), this was 2015.
I stand corrected. I read the article too quickly and thought she was from the 2010 case.
This story details a separate incident 4-5 years later. Players were not named, but one is led to believe they are “stars.”
Not the Appling/Payne story. That was years before.
Nope, different one.
pretty sure there has been at least 3 of these basketball player gang rapes; 1) 2009ish (supposedly involving the same grad asst that lived in izzo's basement), 2) 2010 appling/payne at the freshmen orientation, 3) this incident in 2015.
i wonder how many more. these aren't just rapes, they are gang rapes. that is a program with players out of control; knowing they can get away with it.
I can't keep all this shit straight myself either. But why don't any of these stories ever lead anywhere?
Because the sports media holds up these coaches like royalty. It’s the same reason you barely heard anything about Duke opening up an inquiry into Zion’s recruitment on national platforms.
While I agree with you, people should be a lot more outraged about rape accusations than paying a college player.
The protection that Ingham county authorities provide MSU athletics is real. They see themselves as playing a part in the success of the program and have fostered this culture. Which was evident in these counseler's attempt to dissuade the victims. And if it goes further it gets squashed in the courts (note the motion to dismiss filed by the University earlier this year) The attitude is not that complicated. It does have to do with their inferiority complex when it comes to Michigan. The hatred is so deep, they will do anything and everything to protect those who can show superiority over Michigan first and foremost.
Not unlike Ohio State. But those protections are statewide.
MSU and Tom Izzo's response:
"I get paid a lot of money to take a lot of bullets that won't break me."
Burn them to the ground!!!
Former players Draymond Green, Travis Trice and Denzell Valentine all granted retroactive extra year of eligibility, and have agreed to return to campus in show of support for their beloved and beleaguered coach.
MSU Rape Culture confirmed
spartans will!!!
Goes to RCMB to see their response to this heart-wrenching story, hoping it will be sympathetic and measured, at least. Sees first comment:
Shakes head in disgust and disbelief. Leaves RCMB...

I don't understand all the secrecy. I suppose she was Jane Doe because she didn't want to be harassed while still a student. But at this point why not reveal at least the names of the counselors who told her to keep quiet?
This makes at least 3 cases of basketball players being accused of rape over a multiple year period and getting away with it. How Izzo is able to keep his job is beyond me.
are you kidding. How does Izzo keep his job. He is the urban Meyer of the sparties. Able to do no wrong. Just helpin' his boys to be better people
so that means he'll retire and teach courses on "Character and Leadership"?
Nice of them to wait until MSU's tourney run was over
Nothing will happen to Izzo. Business as usual in East Landfill.
Let Justice be done . And expose the Ingham county legal system for what it is. . .
