247 article: Underrated transfer portal gems
Of course the primary player of note for Michigan is Mike Danna, and the 247 outlook is glowing. This was an outstanding addition by the staff this offseason.
"Danna might be the most underrated addition of the offseason at any program. A huge producer at Central Michigan (14 TFL, 8.5 sacks), Michigan got a steal when it added Danna to a front seven that’s in need of established pass rushers after the departures of Chase Winovich and Rashan Gary."
But the article includes another transfer to pay attention to, incoming Ohio State guard Jonah Jackson from Rutger. He was All-B1G honorable mention for both coaches and media last year. There's also a Florida guy, since you know we'll be playing them.
Silly question, but I'm assuming Danna will be on campus this spring/summer?
correct. Not sure if it’s because he hasn’t technically graduated yet or what. But that’s what I would assume.
It's because he hasn't graduated yet.
He could have graduated in December, which would allow him to be on campus in January. That's partially why I asked.
I’m not a fan of the portal for non grad transfers. It makes it too easy for guys to leave without even talking with their coach. I mean it fits perfect with our current society in that, if somethings not perfect, just quit. Not a good quality to have. That being said, since the portal exists, just get rid of the whole sit out a year rule. Fields being eligible is a joke.
Cmon, do you honestly believe these guys enter the portal without talking to their coaches?
It is my understanding, that they do not need permission from a coach to put themselves in the portal. If that’s the case, then yes, I believe some do not talk to their coach. The point is many guys are going to make a hasty decision instead of talking it out. Zach Gentry was going to transfer, but didn’t, after talking to Harbaugh. The portal did not exist and if it had, Gentry may have moved on. That is what I got out the AED Podcast interview at least.
They do not need permission to enter the portal but I can’t see that happening without a conversation with their coach first. In any event, entering the portal does not require you to transfer. You can withdraw from the portal the same way you entered it. There is no guarantee your scholarship will still be available though.
I don’t care what they do with the transfer issue, but pick something. Either everyone sits a year except for special circumstances or everyone gets one transfer with no eligibility penalties. Make it transparent at least.
Or make the coaches sit out a year when they "transfer".
I wonder how that would go over.
I understood that was rather tongue-in-cheek, but that is straight up not a legal action. That only highlights the ridiculousness of the whole issue in regards to the players.
Can you explain your legal reasoning? How is requiring coaches to sit for a year if they leave in the middle of a contract more offensive than the "non-compete" clauses in contracts that are legal in every state, as long as they are "reasonable."
Well, that's just it, in several states I've worked in, we put a "non-compete" clause in the contract, but we know it's mostly unenforceable in that state. Whether it's the courts or the legality, I don't know. Business contracts sure, employment contracts, no.
The difference is in who is requiring the coaches to sit out. If the school puts that clause in its contract, it is just like a non-compete. But if the NCAA tries to make that a rule, that is a violation of antitrust law.
The NCAA is an organization created in order to facilitate agreements between different entities that compete with each other. An NCAA restriction on the coaches' ability to change jobs is tantamount to price-fixing. It's basically a bunch of competitors (the schools) getting together and promising not to hire each other's employees (the coaches) right away.
Employers are generally free to make whatever contracts they want with employees (subject to basic fairness tests), but employers can't make agreements with each other not to hire each other's employees. That's an antitrust problem.
I'd be okay with allowing players to transfer without sitting a year at the end of the season if their head coach or coordinator left the season they signed.
If you had no restrictions on player transfers, I think the level of movement would make building a program a terribly difficult task and would probably have a huge negative impact on the product on the field. You'd have players transferring the second they didn't win a job or had a row with the coach. It'd be James Hudson x10 every year.
Great point.
What's on the field is not a "product" it's an amateur athletic event. /s
My idea is if you want a transfer to be immediately eligible, you get docked a scholarship. If he sits a year, you’re good.
This is an absolutely horrid take and you should feel bad about it. What's wrong with athletes pursuing a place where they feel like they have the best place to showcase their talents? Nobody bats an eye when coaches just up and leave, why can't players do that?
Also, Fields being eligible is absolutely not a joke. Accurate or not, racist comments is probably the single most legitimate reason to transfer that I can think of
I feel good about it. It’s called integrity, perseverance and sticking something out. I guess I’m old school.
Fields did not transfer because of racist comments, let’s be real.
"It’s called integrity, perseverance and sticking something out."
These are all great things. Generally speaking the coaches, administrators, etc. don't seem to be held to this same standard.
The person who was racist to Fields was kicked out of school. Fields left for football and very clearly used the racist comments as an excuse. His sister still goes to the school. Hopefully Martell becomes a star and Fields sucks. That would be perfect.
" The person who was racist to Fields was kicked out of school. "
No.
The person who was racist to Fields was kicked off the baseball team, but allowed to remain at the University.
Didn't Fields's lawyer specifically state that racism wasn't part of their argument?
accurate or not huh?
So assuming it was inaccurate, meaning it never happened, then please explain how making up racist things that never happened is a legitimate reason to transfer?
If a coach is not performing (winning games) he can be fired. If a player is not performing, should he then be held to the same standard and kicked off the team and his scholarship revoked because he's not what the team thought he would be? I mean, nobody bats an eye when the coach gets fired when the team goes 1-11, sooooo......
True if a coach is not performing he can be fired, but he still gets paid the remainder of his contract. So the equivalent on the player side would seem to be, he is not on the team, but his scholarship remains.
Totally agree with you here. Open it up, for at least one transfer without penalty.
If an asshole screeaming nasty stuff from the stands is an excuse, then it’s an excuse for every player. I’ve heard racist shit directed at black players at Michigan and Berkeley.
You have to go through Compliance to get your name in the transfer portal so your concern is nonsense. As is your paternalistic concern over players exercise the little power they have in a very one-sided relationship.
JFC, I'll get off your damn lawn.
It's become readily apparent from the posts around here who believes he's pulled his bootstraps up the most.
I read/heard somewhere that once you enter the portal, the school no longer has to honor your scholarship if you decide to come back...
Wonder when the first story of that is going to happen. Kid tries to transfer to a worse school for playing time, realizes there's no interest, and then the coach takes the opportunity to essentially cut them... leaving the kid to drop out or foot the tuition bill on his own...
Screw the head coach. Unfortunately, these miserable bastards( not all but some) hold the fate of your ability to play in their hands, while the cash in on $$$$$
There's a transfer portal gem to be named later too.
I heard it’s a long snapper.
CMU wasted a pretty good defense last year with a putrid offense. Aside from Danna, they also will have two DBs that will get drafted in this year and one of them probably in the first three rounds (Sean Bunting). Danna was usually the most impressive physically defensive lineman out there for both teams (in the games I saw which were basically all the home games). He should be serviceable for Michigan and do a nice job, but anyone expecting anything more will be very disappointed.
This pretty much explains Central football going back to Herb Deromedi.
Useful rotation player would be great.
I'm pretty sure everyone is expecting him to be serviceable. A nice mid-major addition to shore up DL with enough experience to not end up way out of position on the field.
They got a running back in that there portal thingy??? Looks like most of our are broken.
Yes, quite a few actually (LINK). Though many aren't B1G quality RBs. Guys who could be B1G quality and are eligible immediately are:
Tyson Williams (4* from So Carolina)
Taj Griffin (4* from Oregon)
Eric Swinney (4* from Ole Miss)
Brandon Stephens (3* from UCLA)
Tristian Houston (3* from Texas)
Money. And whores.
Whores. And money. Priorities.
In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women
Even 18 - 22 year old college athletes ? Damn times sure have changed.
They should get a DT.
Mike Danna could be a beast. It's clearly not set in stone that the DEs are gong to be Hutchinson and Paye.
It could turn out that watching Uche and Danna on the same side of the defense, if that line up does happen, would be great fun to watch, and awful for opposing QBs.
Is there any news on Brandon Peters, if he is going to transfer? Neither Jim Harbaugh or Josh Gattis mentioned his name when they were asked about QBs. I haven't heard his name in quite some time. Is he staying or transferring?
The only thing of him I've seen is in this video:
