Dwumfour tweet: Rehab is going great I will be back healthy very soon
On mobile so not going to embed but he says:
"I did not tear my planta fascia in the bowl hame I tore it against Maryland and still played did not miss any games I don't know where this false information is coming from. Rehab is going great I will be back healthy very soon in Jesus name."
Someone may want to tell his coach this.
I don’t know why people think there’s a disconnect here??
Jim says Mike tore his PF before the bowl and is rehabbing.
Mike says he did not tear his PF in the bowl, he tore it against Maryland, and his rehab is going well.
We played Maryland in October, bowl game was December.
Can someone point me to the disconnect?
I think the disconnect is that Dwumfour seems to think there is a disconnect, if that makes sense.
No, the statements by Harbaugh and Dwumfour are not inherently incompatible, but the fact that Dwumfour felt like he needed to issue a correction is.... just kind of weird.
Other people ran with it and said that he tore it in the bowl game. His tweet doesn’t implicate Jim at all. I seriously don’t find this weird at all.
I don't think it is weird in like an "alarming" or "concerning" sense. But I read the press conference notes verbatim and Harbaugh's statements on the injuries did tend to imply that there was a worsening of the prognosis with at least one of the injuries to Dwumfour or DPJ.
Harbaugh said he’s worried but hoping for the best.
Dwumfour said rehab is going well.
Again, to see a conflict here you have to a). Want to see that, and b). Make assumptions/imagine things that are not known or implied.
For arguments sake - say that Dwumfour didn't agree with how Harbaugh characterized his injury and tweeted out that he is fine and his rehab is going well.
What would that indicate to you? To me, it would indicate that Harbaugh and Dwumfour had slightly different opinions as to the injury and nothing to see here.
What would it indicate to you? I ask because that possibility seems to have very serious and dire meaning to you.
That's not what I get from their exchange. What I get is that people on Twitter, and blogs like this one, and second-rate publications like Maize and Brew (https://www.maizenbrew.com/football/2019/4/3/18293759/donovan-peoples-j…) ran with what Jim said and implied that Dwumfour is going to miss the season.
Jim said he's worried about the injury. Dwumfour's tweet doesn't read like he's correcting his head coach to me - it reads like he's correcting the internet doomsday crowd.
Nobody had to "imply" it. Harbaugh said it. He said the injuries could threaten their availability "for the season." That is just what the man said.
Saying "could" and "threaten" their availability for some regular season games is a long way from "they might miss the entire season", which is what MnB reported.
Non-zero chance of missing a game or two is far from looking at being done for the year.
"Harbaugh says Dwumfour had a torn plantar fascia before the bowl game. Peoples-Jones had a soft tissue injury. He's concerned about both, but hoping for the best."
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) April 3, 2019
When the head coach says he's concerned about an injury but hoping for the best, while the injured guy himself says he's rehabbing and there's nothing to worry about, it's not imagining things to see a bit of a disconnect in the language there.
Having said that, it's entirely possible that Harbaugh's guarded interpretation of Dwumfour's situation is more in accordance with reality than Dwumfour's more optimistic take is.
Don, it’s the definition of imagining things. They both said it happened before the bowl. They both said he’s rehabbing. Neither offered conflicting prognosis (“worried but hoping for best” does not conflict at all with “rehab going well”).
Everyone saying “omg why are our coach and played on different pages” is literally imagining something that doesn’t exist.
Seriously, you don't know that. You are presenting an opinion as fact. A University spokesman literally just released a statement attempting to clarify Harbaugh's remarks. If a person were to look at the situation including Dwumfour's tweet without a pre-conceived opinion, you would think it is more likely than not that somebody, possibly Dwumfour, did not like how the injuries and prognosis were explained and took exception to it. And you would also conclude that, if true, it is also not that big of a deal.
They are putting a clarification out because some website extrapolated / put out that both DPJ and Dwumfour were season-ending issues.
If you ever wondered why or complained that we rarely get this type of info from Harbaugh or the team - you can simply refer to the above note and this entire blog discussion for the answer.
Chengalis - "Coach, following up on the injuries to Donovan and Michael Dwumfour, are they injuries that could keep them out of the season?"
Harbaugh - "They could."
Verbatim from the press conference.
Thank you. The spokesperson was issuing a statement because Maize and Brew insinuated that both were serious risks to miss the season, and twitter was running with that.
Tobaggan, don't put words in my mouth—I didn't refer in any way to the question of when the injury occurred. My reference was solely and only to the statements made by Harbaugh (filtered through Nick Baumgardner) and Dwumfour about the injury itself and prospects for recovery.
If you can't see the difference in the message between “worried but hoping for best” and “rehab going well” then you're dismissing nuance in communication and how it affects interpretation of underlying meaning.
Is this the most important thing facing the program right now? Far from it.
It's spring. That time of year for rampant, often inaccurate, speculation. I do find humor in the player having to tweet out that he's doing fine. Kind of reminds me of the bring out your dead scene from Monty Python.
The disconnect is reading comprehension. That and uh dumb people worrying about shit they can’t control.
Kinda weird that the head coach and the player he's talking about aren't apparently on the same page. C'mon, Jim.
Don hits the nail.
...he completely misses it though...
I think you have a tendency to think that any poster who notes anything weird or out of the ordinary when it comes to Michigan football, specifically, is being an alarmist or trolling for the worst possibility. Nobody here is doing that. Take the 1000 foot view of this. It is just kind of an odd situation. That is all anybody is saying.
I don’t find this odd at all, but I’m not a concern troll.
Same. I side with the Doctor on this one.
I have a tendency to call out people who like to fill blanks in with negative inferences that they've made up. I don't find anything to be weird here, and I think large portions of the fanbase running with "Coach and Player are saying two wildly different things about injury, one must be lying" is bad for the program.
This takes many forms within this fanbase. This is just the latest version of it. It's ultimately harmless - I think Dwumfour will be fine, and I don't think we'll ever talk about this again after this week - but there's this dumb tendency on the internet to try to see scandal everywhere and it's bad.
Nobody is seeing a scandal. People are watching and/or reading the Harbaugh press conference, they are surprised to hear Harbaugh say that the injuries could have an impact on the season for Dwumfour and DPJ, and are then are puzzled when one of the players tweets something that implies that he does not agree with that assessment. Nobody is seeing a scandal. People are just processing information from different sources.
Are you saying that Dwumfour is retiring from football?
Lets cool the "woe is me" panic posts. Dwumfour is unconcerned and says he'll be fine.
There's no such tweet for DPJ but we're 5 months from the season starting. Obviously we don't know much info about the injury beyond it being soft tissue but a quick google search says soft tissue injury can recover in 6 weeks. Back off the ledge people.
In the other thread UMbig11 says: "DPJ is dealing with a groin injury and will heal up this summer."
There we go. Is him being hurt until the summer ideal? No. Is an injury that sounds like he'll be healed from by the time the season starts a reason to freak out? No.
That's what I don't understand about this overreaction. There are, what, 4+ months before the season starts? Guys can be injured and take some time rehabbing without it being a huge detriment. And it's astounding to me that people who recognize that the coaches and staff rarely divulge relevant information to the public would all of a sudden just drop huge information about guys' injuries months out.
I'm sure Dwumfour and DPJ are injured, and it's taking time to recover. But considering how coy Harbaugh is I'm a bit dubious in his claim that he's seriously concerned two guys with totally manageable injuries might miss the season.
Oh sure. Like how the hell would HE know?
How would you know it's a he?
Chris Balas just tweeted that a UM spokesperson has stated the DPJ and Dwumfour injuries are not expected to be season ending.
So wait Jim says it and then a spokesperson has to correct it??
SMH. Is anyone ever on the same page in that building??
Not fully on the same page, no.
LOL, for all the scorn heaped on Hoke for just saying players had boo-boos, this shows why coaches might want to avoid talking about injuries.
As I noted above - somebody took what Jim said and REPORTED it as season-ending injuries for both players.
This is why a clarification was released.
If it were up to me someone’s credentials would be suspended for calendar 2019 if not outright revoked. That is some Chat-sports level of dumbfuckery.
Have you watched the press conference? Harbaugh says that the injuries to Dwumfour and People-Jones could keep them out of the for the season. He is specifically asked that question, "could they be injuries that keep them out for the season?" And he answers "yes, they could." The only qualification that he offers is that "he puts a lot of stock into how players feel themselves and what they can do" and neither DPJ or Dwumfour have reported that they can "really do anything."
I don't think credentials will be suspended for a reporter reporting exactly what a coach says during a press conference. What does it all mean? Probably nothing. A coach saying something that kind of comes out wrong because they had not considered the question? Harbaugh's typical propensity for not being particularly "verbally astute?" Probably.
But what you are saying is not true - it is misinformation.
Every report I saw quoted Harbaugh correctly. Watch the video here
In response to a question as to whether the injuries could keep them out for the season, Harbaugh said they could.
Another direct quote; "Concern is, and the worry really, is that it’s more serious. That they can get back to their previous form and level.”
He also said that Dwumfour sustained his injury just before the bowl game. Dwumfour says it happened in October.
There were plenty of reasons to clarify Jim's statement, even if someone reported it incorrectly.
It’s April 3rd fergodsakes...
So much doom and gloom. So many guys with injuries. In other news, there is not much separation between QB1 and QB2.
Really wonder if O'Korn can beat out Speight....
sorry, wrong year ;)
In all seriousness, don't know if we've had this stacked of a QB room in decades.
You sneaky bastard, you hid this amazing gem in the middle of nowhere...
I assume this is because McCaff is doing amazingly well but Patterson is just a hint better, and not because they are both mundane and Patterson slightly less do. Right? RIGHT???
I really was pleasantly surprised with how good McCaffrey looked in limited time last year. His dual-threat ability is better than Shea's. But I still think this offense will suit Shea really well, and he will only *completely* lose ground if he gets dinged up.
Agreed. Just big and confident with an accurate arm, but also damned fast. Plus, I figure we deserve a home-grown stud quarterback for the first time since Chad Freaking Henne (love you Denard, but you were just an electric athlete, not a QB <3).
I did, and yes it is very close. McCaffery would start for at least 4-5 other Big Ten teams this year.
Two good QBs is a nice problem to have. And one we haven't had in a while. Hopefully everyone stays healthy and we are in good shape at the position for the next few years.
