OSU trustee resigns because colleagues treated Meyer investigation like a sham
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/30/sports/ohio-state-trustee-resigns-ur…
Couple of key quotes:
“I didn’t feel that I’d seen high-integrity behavior,” Mr. Wadsworth said of Mr. Meyer.
"You read the report,” Mr. Wadsworth said, “and there’s seven or eight things about emails, memory loss, hearing things five times, and to me, that raised an issue of standards, values — not how many games someone should be suspended for.”
No way this thing is over...OSU is likely going to regret not firing Urban when they had the chance last week.

incoming
and if it's a drip-drip-drip during the season it could be trouble for that ohio football team. as i said before about the ohio fans' wish to keep meyer: be careful what you wish for, for you may get it.

There's a lot of talk on OSU blogs and Twitter that the team will be "angry" over this and whip their opponents, particularly Michigan because they're so mad (LOL). But when has drama like this ever helped a college football team succeed?
August 30th, 2018 at 1:40 PM ^
What a self-own. I hate it when Michigan fans say stuff like this too, because it implies the players weren't going to be giving it their best effort without the extra b.s.
August 30th, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
Yep. The last time I said this about Michigan was after the App State game in 2007. I was 21 at the time and very... inexperienced, so to speak. I thought that our team would be so angry we'd beat the crap out of Oregon. HA. I've learned my lesson since then.
August 30th, 2018 at 1:44 PM ^
i think rage and revenge can reveal an extra level of effort and intensity, but I wouldn't think it's a high-performance level.
August 30th, 2018 at 1:59 PM ^
MSU does this kind of shit. OSU may not have much of a moral high ground, but their football program doesn't need MSU-style motivation to be good.
August 30th, 2018 at 2:26 PM ^
To be fair, it probably motivates msu players to take more roidz.
August 30th, 2018 at 1:50 PM ^
Thought the same evenyoubrutus and was about that age then. I also was an idiot and thought that after the 2013 Akron game as well , as I hadn't fully realized what a shitty coach Hoke was at that point.
August 30th, 2018 at 2:12 PM ^
Was at that Akron game with my kids and told them that Akron had to be great and would run away with the MAC title after that one......not so much
August 30th, 2018 at 2:38 PM ^
The only time I have ever seen a Michigan team "rage out" to their benefit it was against Florida in the 2008 Capitol One Bowl. And we did play sloppy and carelessly during that game, but Mike Hart was so incredibly mad at everybody that day it didn't matter.
August 30th, 2018 at 2:58 PM ^
Possibly vs. PsU in 97...
August 30th, 2018 at 3:20 PM ^
The Florida game was different. Those kids were mad. They had been at the pinnacle of college football a little over a year earlier, and then.... Bo dies, they lose a heartbreaker against OSU, they suffer the embarrassment of App. State, suffer injuries galore, can barely field a team against OSU, coach announces retirement, nobody gives them a half of a shot against Florida. They basically knew already that a lot of players were not coming back and that they would likely never really play together again. That Florida team got hammered with a lot more emotion than they expected from Michigan.

My fave Umich game of all time. A dark, grey afternoon. "Sack! A slow developing play-action thing that was blown apart by the rush of Glen Steele." Looking forward to more of that this year.
August 30th, 2018 at 4:06 PM ^
Yeah, but even Mike Hart tripled his career lost fumbles that day....making what should have been a massacre a comfortable win.
August 30th, 2018 at 8:28 PM ^
But they would have never been in that game without the RAGE. The Michigan team that we saw that entire season was “responsible” but also incredibly flat and detached. Sometimes just being pissed and playing like it can get you further than most people think for one game. (This applies to football only, a pissed basketball team is always a mess). Michigan just wanted to hit somebody hard that day, and Florida had the bad luck of being the team that was there to be hit.
August 30th, 2018 at 3:34 PM ^
I knew we'd get smoked by Oregon. The second thing I said after App State (1st was FFFUUUU........!!!!!!!) was, "Next week we play against the same offense, only better."
August 30th, 2018 at 6:50 PM ^
That was the game that turned me on to the spread offense.
August 31st, 2018 at 2:06 PM ^
Dennis Dixon was on his way to a Heisman until he had a knee blowout a week or two later.
August 30th, 2018 at 4:06 PM ^
Sometimes a team does bounce back from a loss with a super-strong performance. You can find plenty of examples of that. But off-field issues are different. OSU players can't make this story go away by winning football games.
August 30th, 2018 at 11:05 PM ^
Count me as surprised that you're only 32... Thats probably more of a compliment than not one, just surprised me based on your posting history.
August 30th, 2018 at 1:47 PM ^
it is clearly "adversity" that they overcame and made them tighter as a team..... I can see the winsome stories now
August 30th, 2018 at 2:04 PM ^
Joel Klatt was on the radio the other day. He compared the OSU situation to what he went through at Colorado, presumably during the McCartney era. He suggested the distractions would negatively affect the team.
August 30th, 2018 at 3:31 PM ^
I think you probably mean the Gary Barnett era. McCartney did his weird promise-keepers thing but I don't recall any significant scandals under his watch. Barnett was the coach when all the sexual assault and harassment stuff was happening.
August 30th, 2018 at 2:29 PM ^
I've read some of their comments and it's truly hard to stomach. Yes, I get being a diehard but it goes to a level where I now truly believe the IQ level is quite low there...I sincerely hope that real justice is served. Then the bucknuts will be REALLY mad!
August 30th, 2018 at 3:08 PM ^
Yeah, usually it ends up being an unwelcome distraction to the team.
Brett McMurphy said a few days ago he'd be stunned if Meyer were still their coach in 2019. I thought that seemed like an awfully bold statement, but who knows at this point?
August 30th, 2018 at 3:31 PM ^
Drama such as the drama that could (should) get your coach fired rarely if ever has a positive effect on the team. My guess is OSU will have at least two losses by the Michigan game. And Michigan will hand them their third (or greater) loss.
August 30th, 2018 at 4:57 PM ^
I don't think OSU has much experience with "chip on the shoulder" inspiration. They are used to being top dog. I've said before, if this were my team I'd be very worried about the effect of all this distraction.
August 31st, 2018 at 6:19 PM ^
Hope you're right, but we've seen cheaters prospering for decades, right across the college football landscape.
August 30th, 2018 at 1:57 PM ^
This ^^^ !!!
I said it on another thread after the official report came down: OSU swallowed the proverbial poison pill. They’re too short sighted and arrogant to not see that Meyer, and the entire situation, is a toxic timebomb that will eventually explode and do significantly more harm to their precious football program than firing him would have done.
They thumbed their noses at the media and the media will continue to circle like a pack of hungery wolves because they KNOW that there is fresh meat there to uncover. It didn’t take long for an insider, privy to the sham investigation, to break out and express his disappointment in public. There will be more.
Drip, drip, drip ... tic toc, tic toc!
August 30th, 2018 at 2:17 PM ^
Another way to put it: cut off the leg to save yourself, or let gangrene set in and die.
August 30th, 2018 at 2:27 PM ^
Drip, drip, drip
exactly right
yesterday, crazy tweets from ZS
today, news of a trustee resignation & he was a former Board Chair
August 30th, 2018 at 4:20 PM ^
As was discussed on the MGoBlog Roundtable last week, this was an opportunity for Ohio State to really demonstrate where they stand. They could have fired Meyer, won 10 or 11 games this year, hired the next great thing, and hardly missed a beat. They would have made themselves the poster-child school for handling these things the right way. When the next scandal arose, it would be, "Are you Michigan State or are you Ohio State?"
They dropped the ball so bad, and now now the rot is going to eat away at them. And for what? For Urban Meyer? Is he really that important to your program? You had a great program before he got there. I mean, Michigan fans are fucking sick of how consistently good that program has managed to be. You wanted to throw that away over some guy?
August 30th, 2018 at 5:21 PM ^
They had a great program before Meyer got there but it too was led by an unethical slimeball.
August 30th, 2018 at 1:36 PM ^
It's so nice to see one person from that University finally speak the truth. Good on you for getting out of there and maintaining your integrity Mr. Wadsworth.
August 30th, 2018 at 2:01 PM ^
And now that he's gone, they can bring in someone who will truly be loyal to the Athletic Department....I mean school.
August 30th, 2018 at 2:04 PM ^
Yes, just like when those MSU trustees resigned in protest. Oh, wait . . . .
August 30th, 2018 at 2:56 PM ^
Agreed.
Sadly for him and his family, they will now need to enter witness protection.
August 30th, 2018 at 3:20 PM ^
Listen to the recent Bill Simmons podcast with Mark Titus. He's embarrassed by his alma mater and isn't afraid to say so.
August 30th, 2018 at 4:28 PM ^
So true. Paging Diogenes...
August 30th, 2018 at 1:36 PM ^
If this drama continues there's a real possibility Meyer could call it quits anyway. Who knows how much truth is in this article from a couple of years ago
https://thelab.bleacherreport.com/i-m-not-the-lone-wolf/
But if it is true that he deals with anxiety and depression, he may say screw it and retire completely.
August 30th, 2018 at 2:01 PM ^
Um, Meyer just proved he is untouchable. They basically said he was a scumbag and a gutless human being and then suspended him from standing on the sidelines but allowed him to coach the team all week. Nobody down there cares, its all about wins.
Hope I am wrong
August 30th, 2018 at 5:43 PM ^
You're not wrong. I can confirm that we only care about winning. But it's actually great not caring about ethics or what other people think. Winning year after year is probably the greatest feeling. I sleep soundly at night too!
August 30th, 2018 at 6:14 PM ^
It's pretty obvious you don't care what other people think since you took the time to make an account on a rival blog and write such a cheeky comment.
August 30th, 2018 at 7:49 PM ^
You,: empty set
record v. Michigan = 49-58-6, right?
August 30th, 2018 at 9:27 PM ^
Are you one of those ichigan dreamers that talk about the good ole day's back in the early 1900's? scUM's entire fanbase is so delusional. Anybody that brags about the early 1900's doesn't have a leg to stand on. I hope the Irish pound sand up your ass Saturday evening.
August 30th, 2018 at 10:11 PM ^
Hey ho! You still hangin' around these parts there, Hickman? Come on Hickman! Dont be such a LOSER!
August 31st, 2018 at 9:59 PM ^
I'm not going anywhere for awhile, just here to piss you delusional fans off. And by the way, I'm not a hick.
August 30th, 2018 at 10:12 PM ^
your response says so much about you. you must fit in perfectly in columbus. congrats, sport.
August 31st, 2018 at 12:07 PM ^
Early 1900's??? LOL what the heck are you talking about? I am 32 and as a kid I watched Michigan go 10-2-1 against Ohio State, win a national championship and get two Heisman trophies. Oh but we are delusional.
Oh and btw, before your recent run of success, Michigan's record against you guys was 56-32-6. Mathematically, that's not a record that was built in the early 1900s.
Good Lord.
August 31st, 2018 at 9:56 PM ^
Yes the early 1900's, start at 1950 and OSU has the all time lead. And you were co national champions. Take that Ohio boy off that team and your nothing. Everybody knows Charles went up North because Ed Martin payed him too. And your other Heisman was from Ohio too. I would rather be 2-10-1 in 13 years than be 2-15 in 17 years. The ichigan fanbase is so damn delusional.
