Nussmeier OC Intro Press Conference
I know it's been a few days since the press conference, but I'm still pretty excited about the hire. I hadn't seen it posted anywhere, so I thought I'd ... like... do that.

Had already seen it but others may not have.
Personally, I'm not worried that this guy might be gone in 3-4 years to be a HC somewhere. I'd rather have a damn good and successful coach for 3-4 years who goes on to be a HC than a mediocre OC for a decade.

He inspires someone on staff or on the team or a GA to be like him and be fired up and, you know... good?
It would be awesome to start a coaching tree that includes more than just a dying seedling. That's what seems to happen at schools with good coaches. They train good players to become good coaches and they train new assistants to be better assistants.

I agree. If he does well for a few years and leaves that's fine with me for a few reasons
- Stablizes the offense for someone else to come in
- DB has shown he's willing to open the checkbook so we could probably steal a similar replacement
- If he's successful, great because now he's in the Michigan coaching tree in someway - maybe a HC candidate here down the road?
I just hope the NFL doesn't try to poach him after just a year or two

But if folks in the NFL were looking to poach him, isn't now as good a time as any? But I'm with you; I hope he does all those things you referenced, and I hope he's part of the UM staff for awhile.
I wonder how short his leash will be among the UM fans. He has a great resume and recent past with tremendous success. But we've seen how impatience can lead to mutiny of sorts with fans whose expectations are high and patience low.

If he turns us around (which shouldn't be tough with all the young talent here) he'll be showing up all over NFL coaching searches the next few years

I don't think Michigan fans are going to be too harsh on Nuss, for the same reason that (up to now) they haven't been all that hard on Mattison - his track record inspires confidence for the future.

Problems would be perceived by the fanbase (and, I think, by third parties) to be a systemic issue stemming from Hoke.
I don't want it to happen and I don't even think it's likely, but I could see a scenario where Hoke is forced out and Nuss replaces him.

-- i.e., Chizik gets fired, Malzahn gets hired -- but of course there was an intervening year.

I can think of right off hand is an NFL example, Jerry fired Wade Phillips and promoted the HC in waiting, OC Jason Garrett. Of course in that instance Wade Phillips was both the HC and DC and it was perceived that it was the D that let the team down. So out with the DC who just happened to be the HC.
IMO, the only way Nuss could possibly be elevated to HC is if there is some sort of severe scandal which doesn't touch him. Simply having another poor season won't do it unless it is directly attributable to the D and can be laid at the feet of not just Mattison, but Hoke as well.
I shudder to conceive of it.

That would be ugly.
UM loses three games in which the offense produced and either the defense hemorraged or Hoke made some weird coaching decisions and/or messed up the clock management. Then other schools come sniffing around Nuss.
How many UM fans, with the memory of a great coach in Jim Harbaugh not being given a shot at the job in '08 b/c of HC inexperience will toss that concern aside and clamor for Nuss to be promoted?

That type of scenario seems a little farfetched. First, if we go 9-3, I don't think that many people are going to call for Hoke to be fired. There might be some but not a critical mass. 9-3 represents improvement over this year. If the D is the problem, people will simply call for Mattison's ouster (and he's closing in on retirement age anyway). But I doubt the D will be that big of a problem, given that we return a lot of talent and Mattison's good track record.
Many fans have criticized Hoke for being too much of a delegator, but now we're seeing some of the benefits of that. Nussmeier, I'm sure, was attracted by the freedom Hoke is going to offer him. Another HC might not offer that. In fact, there is some buzz that he also reached out to Brian Kelly around the same time, and decided Michigan was a better fit.

God next season can't get here soon enough.

People are posting some weird/silly/mean comments. I would expect to see a drinking thread somewhere on the front page. Atleast then people have a reason for being so mean.
[Failed imbed of why is the rum gone :(]

you only posted this press conference thread to take back some of the spotlight from a rcmb thread on the rose bowl
