Russell Bellomy Is Back, Shane Is Taking First Team Snaps, and Gardner Is Out This Week
In practice on Tuesday, freshman quarterback Shane Morris took snaps with the first team as Gardner's replacement. However, Hoke also announced that quarterback Russell Bellomy -- who suffered a torn ACL last spring -- returned to practice Tuesday, as well.
Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner will miss practice this week at least until Thursday with a turf toe injury.
Devin should be fine for the bowl game. I like the idea that Shane is getting a chance to get some first team reps. Also good to hear Bellomy is back.

You just joined yesterday and said that 808 times?

Our second best QB needs to be the second string guy. This includes getting playing time where he can to spell Devin if he gets hurt.
I would more than a bit concerned if Shane can't stay ahead of Bellomy on the depth chart.

But I certainly am not putting him in the scrap pile because of that one game. I still think he can be a viable player for Michigan, even if that is just in a backup capacity.

What about his other game, Alabama, that was just as bad?
December 11th, 2013 at 7:04 AM ^
Came in during one series because DR got dinged, and threw an INT. BFD.
You know nothing about Bellomy, I know nothing about Bellomy, I submit nobody that contributes on this board knows anything about Bellomy other than he's looked good during spring and fall practice. Here's a novel idea, why don't we let those who see and evaluate him on a daily basis make the decisions.

"why don't we let those who see and evaluate him on a daily basis make the decisions"
Not sure if serious, but these types of comments crack me up. Like we have any choice. This is tantamount to another of my favorites: "mods, feel free to delete if..."
While I'm sure the UM coaches and MGoMods appreciate fans and message board users
granting them permission to do their jobs, I don't think it's really necessary.December 11th, 2013 at 10:38 AM ^
GoBLU: I know plenty about Bellomy. I was his pastor when he was in High School. I know he has had injuries that have been extremely unfortunate in timing. I know he works his butt off and does everything the coaches ask. I know he isn't a quitter and will do his best to contribute to this team at the highest level possible. I know he does not take for granted the opportunity given him and with all that, I am extremely proud of him and wish him the very best.
EDIT: I understand I look through rose colored glasses. I am biased.

Bellomy's interception against Alabama was a high pass to the 5'6" Vincent Smith over the middle. It was mostly on Bellomy.

You are the only person who thinks Bellomy can be a viable option, outside of holding clipboards and signalling the plays. He is our next Jack Kennedy, except he is on a scholarship.

Morris or Speight will ever be behind Bellomy on the depth chart.
December 11th, 2013 at 8:59 AM ^
On one hand you have Speight, who I'm pretty high on, but he's a true freshman, needs to add some speed to his delivery, and hasn't had any college training at all.
On the other hand you have a person in his 3rd or 4th year in the system at a college level. I could easily see Bellomy being ahead of Speight next year, and, in fact, I bet it happens.
December 11th, 2013 at 11:53 AM ^
Bellomy will be ahead of Speight because of the red shirt. In the coaches mind I would be surprised if that were true.
December 11th, 2013 at 10:17 AM ^
Shane Morris will redshirt if and only if Bellomy is the real-deal second string QB. This is not 100% implausible, but it seems unlikely. Of course, there's the 2012 scenario where they brought Gardner back online quickly when it was clear Denard couldn't throw the rest of the season, but that sort if proves my point - Bellomy was getting the 2nd team snaps until after the Nebraska game.
December 11th, 2013 at 6:37 PM ^
He's the 3rd string QB.
Are you suggesting that he'd need meaningful snaps to play QB in blowout games?
Again, if DG went down, you'd pull Morris' redshirt and put him in the game. I think people are missing that.

ESPN is again reporting that Brown is resigning...
Texas doesn't look to have any commits that Michigan would recruit. If Saban went, Bama has Hand and possibly RB Bo Scarbrough.
Unless Texas knows 100% that Saban is coming, IMO, this isn't a good move. Sumlin and Briles have signed longterm deals. Strong is probably be the best candidate left, and he's going to be around next year and the year after if you wanted him then.
December 10th, 2013 at 10:33 PM ^
Texas has two commits whom Michigan offered, but neither one looked at Michigan seriously.
Michigan offered a few Alabama commits, and David Cornwell is also committed to the Crimson Tide, along with Ohioan Derek Kief and Iowan Ross Pierschbacher.

Here is Chantel Jennings' article, undoubtedly the place from which the OP got his quotable material - (LINK)
Hoke basically says that they are going to be cautious but that he expects Devin to be OK for the bowl game, which is reassuring. The extra practices hopefully will benefit Morris and Bellomy (assuming he is at least near 100%) as well.

Because I'd assume Lewan and Schofield are sitting for the most part.
I'm really interested as to who kicks out to OT next year. I'm going to assume the following:
1st Team: Braden / Bosch / Glasgow / Kalis / Magnuson
2nd Team: Tuley-Tillman / Bryant / Miller / Burzynski / Fox
Kugler, Bars, Dawson and Samuelson will certainly challenge for PT.

It won't take much to make the two-deep as a true tackle. Michigan doesn't really have a whole lot. The walk-on guys are gone (Gunderson, Mateus), as are Lewan and Schofield, obviously. If Tuley-Tillman is third string, that means he's behind guys who should be guards but might be able to play tackle in a pinch (Kalis, Dawson). The tackles on the roster are basically Magnuson, Braden, Fox, Tuley-Tillman, and then Bushell-Beatty coming in 2014.

you basing that on? His offer sheet was not that of someone who projected to a 1 year starter. Heck Saban offered him, and they way he loses players to the NFL he can't take projects like that.

I think Fox came in with an ACL so not likely practicing yet. Also Burzynski out with ACL. So I would plug in Dawson (RT?) and Bars (RG) on the 2nd team. Also flip Mags and Braden on the "1st" team. Kugler is probably good to go and will be... starting center??
