I missed a few parts of the game. Can someone explain why the box score says Terry Richardson was 3/3 passing for -28 yards. I can't make sense of it.

That's an Al Borges offense for you. All three of those passes came on third and long playaction rollouts, too.

There's some good and not quite so good in here:
|
|
1st Downs | 26 |
3rd down efficiency
|
11.11% |
4th down efficiency
|
50.00% |
Total Yards | 337 |
Passing | 200 |
Comp-Att
|
27-46 |
Yards per pass
|
4.30 |
Rushing | 137 |
Rushing Attempts
|
45 |
Yards per rush
|
3.00 |
Yards Per Play | 3.70 |
So, the passing numbers on a yards per completion and yards per attempt basis are 7.41 yards and 4.35 yards respectively. Shorter than Devin's normal numbers, but it worked.
3.70 yards per play is skewed a little perhaps because of overtimes, but it is a better performance than lately.

These stats look decent only in relation to the past couple weeks. 45 rush attempts to get to 137 is not good. 4.3 yards per pass is not good. 11.11% on third down is not even close to good. Nothing about this was good except converting a couple OT possessions into TDs against an exhausted, injury-riddled defense.
Our defense was good tonight, and it's nice to get any kind of win after the last couple outings. But anyone that wants to turn this game into even the most modest defense of Borges is trying way too hard.

I look at 3.0 yards per rush and think "WOOO 3 YARDS PER RUSH ALRIGHT!"

Isn't this the same as the Coaching snowflake?

How about Green and Smith today? We might have a two-headed monster for years to come after all.

Line looked better - still bad, but better.

I didn't get to watch until overtime.
Could someone please explain to me how the stats have Terry Richardson completing 3/3 passes for -26 yeards?

Al Borges is going to continue to lose games for this team in the future. He needs to be let go.

Defense played well but, against ohio we will need to shore up the middle against
both run and pass.

was a great and terrible offensive coordinator all in one game, sometimes in one series. It maddening watching these formations and play calls. I have no god damn idea what this man is thinking 90% of the time.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:04 PM ^
Sadly, opposing DC's do know what he's thinking 90% of the time.
One day, with a mature/experienced OL who have had great coaching for their entire careers, this won't matter. But is sure does now.

I thought the offense was pretty terrible. I thought Borges called a better game but it was still awful. The fourth down call was terrible and he always seems to play action on obvious pass downs. It makes no sense to me and never works. That being said, Gardner played his heart out but he has regressed as a QB. It is as if he is broken now. He doesn't look anything like the kid who beat Notre Dame. He has tunnel vision and happy feet. I have no idea what the fix is for the offense but it seems like the ND game was a lifetime ago. It was nice to win though.

Had some decent protection there at the end?

They didn't, which is shocking, because Michigan only has one audible out of that formation (Ace 2TE Pistol), which is the speed option to the field side. I saw the audible as it was happening, saw Gardner step back into the Pistol and told everyone I was with "This is a speed option right" and well, you know the rest.
Literally knowing exactly what play the offense is going to run before they run it is...not great.

Hats off to Gardner who has been a warrior. Yes, he makes mistakes, but he has also carried this team at times. He is beat to hell, and yet he came up huge when it counted.
Offensive playcalling was "meh". Looked like Borges was finally calling some of the things we've wanted, and it must have been difficult with that weather. Still, many calls were baffling and that play action with 3rd and goal at the ten still boggles my mind.
Green and Smith looked much better at RB and I hope the OL can gel around that a bit.
Still disappointing that we don't see more Funch and Chesson.

Offense would have looked a lot better if Gardner hadn't flat out missed several 15-20 yard passes up the seam. Gallon dropped the one in OT, but there were at least 4 others that Devin missed.

I thought Borges was pretty good in the play calling. Not close to perfect, but good. But I still won't take too much away from today other than very happy that we won!!!

i see people supporting Gardner and i sit here wondering if we watched the same game. Gardner has been terrible all season with exception to what he did against that amazing Indiana defense. This game was terrible, Ive really lost a lot of trust in Hoke. We got lucky as hell. We were practicly giving NW the game and we still squeaked by. Gardner is a good kid but im sorry hes a terrible quarterback. Anyone who cant see that doesnt know much about football in my opinion. " If he only had proper coaching bla bla bla " . Its not about coaching anymore, the kid makes terrible in game decisions.
