How? Our field goal unit is a disaster.

Oops I misread that as "BCS Championship". My bad!

And the Orange Bowl with Brady over Alabama. Why does everyone forget that?

Sugar Bowl 2012 and Orange Bowl 2000 don't count?
October 20th, 2013 at 9:29 PM ^
Sugar Bowl and the '99-'00 Orange Bowl (Hail Brady!). So there's two off the top of my head...

True, but we aren't really in a position to throw stones. Our 2 BCS bowl wins, basically seperated by an entire decade, are nothing to write home about. FWIW, ND made it to a national title game, and although they got blasted, they at least got all the pomp and circumstance associated with the buildup and hype. I believe we are the only traditional football power to not make the title game.

Georgia.
October 20th, 2013 at 10:19 PM ^
Georgia isn't a traditional power and I'd say they did better than Michigan.
October 20th, 2013 at 10:49 PM ^
I suspect Pop Warner, Fran Tarkenton, and Herschel Walker would disagree with you. Georgia also recruits with us: a few years ago the popularly quoted stat was that Michigan and Georgia were the only two teams averaging top 10 recruiting classes that hadn't made it to the BCS Championship game.

Also, Tennessee has had a rough go of it in the BCS era.

never made a BCS title game.
October 20th, 2013 at 10:19 PM ^
Ehhh when I think of traditional college football powerhouses I think of Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Texas, Alabama, Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.
I'd put them in that second tier.
October 21st, 2013 at 12:59 AM ^
I don't think Georgia is even close to top tier.

Also it's admittedly artifical to base standards of recent success on "haven't won a national championship since thing-that-started-the-day-after-last-national-championship"

No kidding. Notre Dame struggled probably the most of the traditional powers (Alabama, USC, OSU, Nebraska, OU, Texas, Michigan, and Notre Dame), but Michigan is definitely 2nd in that regard. The 2000s were a terrible decade for Michigan football.
October 20th, 2013 at 10:32 PM ^
Won the fiesta bowl in 2000 then got torched in the NCG in 2001. Hasn't made another BCS since.
Probably splitting hairs at this point but it's safe to say times weren't so good for Nebraska football either.

here's my own rating, in case anyone is interested:
1. Michigan
2. F*** you
I am thinking of trying to get this poll included as one of the computerized rankings.

That's also Drew Sharp's AP ballot, except he had #1 and #2 switched.

I am not surprised by Missou's rating. I hate to say it, but I was very, very wrong about them. I thought they would be a tomato can in the SEC and am impressed at what a great job they are doing this year.

Misssouri's defense is really good.

I pretty much stopped paying attention to the Beavers after they lost to E Wash. Did they beat any of the Pac12 power teams while I wasn't paying attention? Also - that ASU loss is really boning Wiscy right now. I think they're a top-20 team, and they don't even track on the BCS. Frankly I'd have thoguht they've got an outside shot of a BCS at-large. Doesn't look like that's realistic right now, but crazier things have happened.

Wisky's best hope is to win out and hope OSU gets into the title game. The Rose Bowl loves to try and keep it Big 10 vs Pac-10 so a 10-2 Wisky would be an appealing pick. Working against the Badgers though might be the fact it would be something like their 3rd or 4th straight trip to the Rose Bowl.
