Hoke presser, 8/22/2013: Shane will backup Devin, etc.
Hoke: Referenced the 3 J's (Jeremy + Joe + Jehu) as rotational replacements at WR for Darboh. Has no problem with rotating. #Team134Camp

Hoke: Starting center still not determined #Team134Camp

Hoke: Shane Morris participated in scrimmage today with 1's and 2's. He will backup Devin Gardner. #Team134

UPDATE:
Also from today, Brady Hoke says Dennis Norfleet will be Michigan's primary kick and punt returner.

- Shane had mono his senior year and had a noticable drop in production
- Cleary has an extra year learning the playback (read: learning how to hand the ball off correctly)
- True freshman QBs are generally terrible
I bet you $1 that Cleary is that first backup QB to see game time this year

Using your (dumb) logic. Derrick Green is clearly the #1 or #2 RB on this team. When actuality, he's fighting with Smith for the #5 spot.

Question: If Devin plays each and every offensive snap this year and Morris is only listed as the backup, can he still redshirt?
I think Green plays this year and Smith redshirts.
Chesson will be the other outside guy.
Norfleet will be used for jet sweeps and WILL get a bubble screen.

redshirt only gets burned if he plays. depth chart doesnt matter

With that in mind, we should play him during garbage time in the early games, to make sure he is ready. As has been pointed out, it's not the end of the world if he doesn't redshirt. We have other elite recruits who will follow him. And as has been pointed out, two years of starting is all you can expect at Michigan: ask Grbac, Navarre, Griese, Brady, et al. The bottom line is that we need him to be ready to play this year because he most certainly is the back up. We cannot afford to blow a game like Nebraska again this year. Surely that is a lesson the coaches learned in '12.

So are you saying there are time when we don't want talented QBs?
August 22nd, 2013 at 10:19 PM ^
You of all people don't know this yet? You can be listed as the starter for the entire year, but if you don't actually play, you can redshirt. Thankfully you go back to high school soon.

No, If #12 is still in there vs. any team that UM may have a nice lead going into the 4th and you don't put Shane in, we (this board) will lose our shit. I may fly home and Bubble Wrap Devin myself if need be.

I wish freshman OL weren't like 99% guaranteed a redshirt. It may sound dumb but I'd rather see Kugler at center than Miller/Glasgow. But of course I'm just a dumb fan.

guaranteed to redshirt and not 100%. Because if they're ready to step in and play right away, they don't get redshirted.

When Darboh went out I wasn't too worried because I figured Chesson was of similar quality, and could fill that void without too much of a dropoff. If the coaches see Chesson as on the same level as Jackson and Reynolds, that says very bad things about the #2 WR position. Bummer.
On the other hand, it's great to see the freshmen RBs and Shane progressing. And I'm very happy that Norfleet was able to lock down the punt returning job as well as kicks.

Joe has shown some potential in highlights and from practice buzz seems to be a guy who may actually catch a pass this year (unlock his blocking duties last year). Jackson, on the other hand, will be the same guy he has been the past three years. A guy who is too slow to be an option on the field. I hope this was just the coaches trying to keep him from feeling bad because if Chesson is really fighting it out with Jackson, that's bad news.

I think knowledge of the offense and route running are the things keeping Chesson at the same level as Jackson and Reynolds at this time.
August 22nd, 2013 at 8:04 PM ^
So are we just forgetting about Dileo here???? He's our second best receiver
August 23rd, 2013 at 12:50 AM ^
Or that was coach-speak like 95% of everything else said in the press conference, the main point of which was to motivate Chesson to kick it into gear.

Whoever starts, will play throughout unless there is an injury. You don't want to be rotating centers, of all positions that would be the toughest to do.

At this point I think they have a good idea of each of their ability to block. If they decide that Miller is the best option, I expect them to give him a fair chance. The first game is the audition, whoever starts vs ND I expect to remain there. Now they could pull whoever that is for a series or two to get their head straight if things are going badly, but if our coaches haven't pegged "the guy" before kickoff vs ND then we're all gonna die.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:20 PM ^
I predict Glasgow will start somewhere because I think he's good. He looked pretty good in the spring game, he looked good pulling near the goal line on the last scrimmage highlights, and he started the spring game and ran with the first string in the last scrimmage. The dude is 6' 6" and moves like a football player. My guess for the starters would be Glasgow at guard and Miller at center. The only way I can see Glasgow not starting is if it were Braden at guard and Miller at center.
It would be one huge line if it were Lewan-Bryant-Glasgow-Kalis-Schofield.
The suspense will end Friday after today's scrimmage so the line can get some run as a unit the rest of the way.
