Fitz probable winner of job but Green not in first pack of RBs if season started today

Submitted by alum96 on

According to this scuttlebutt (edit: not scuttlebutt but direct quote), Fitz would be the starter tomorrow but the 2 freshmen would be behind the returning RB crew of Rawls, Hayes, and Drake.  Since the season starts in 10 days that seems unlikely to change dramatically in a short period of time.  Could be a nod to the veteran players but seems the "Green is 2nd in line" talk is premature.

In fact, Hoke said his hierarchy right now would probably feature Toussaint, redshirt freshman Drake Johnson and juniors Thomas Rawls and Justice Hayes -- with Green and fellow freshman De'Veon Smith falling somewhere behind the pack.

I don't mean that as a snarky question. If you are a friend or relative, that's good enough for me. If you are a scout, and your reputation is on the line, so be it. If you are a fan, what difference does it make?

I don't care if Hoke suits up one of the cheerleaders to carry the ball, as long as they are successful at it.

With a couple of exceptions, Miller is as big as any center going back to what, '05 or 06? Steve Everitt was just about the same size, by the way. Now, whether or not Miller has the skills, the ability and the durability remains to be seen.

I don't see the possibility of someone "getting smart" to be part of the criteria for winning a starting role. If you aren't smart (in a football sense) today, come talk to me when the epiphany  occurs. You aren't standing between my QB and large fellows with nasty attitudes until then.

I also take those as throwaway comments by Hoke. I would suspect that there is far more under consideration for either of them, and I would have no issue with size and skills over-riding a simple comment about "smarts".

As long as one of them separates himself, who cares? I want the best one snapping the ball, and the runner-up pushing him every day. I hope the incoming youngsters are pushing both of them. Glasgow seems to have spent a fair amount of time around Lewan. If David Molk had a protege, his name is Jack Miller. I think I can be pretty happy either way.

I have to wonder if half of a head coaches salary isn't compensation for sitting and listening to some of the questions, so we're pretty much in agreement there.

Just a fan trying to read the tea leaves, biding my time before the games start. Not a scout, friend, relative, or insider.

As a fan, all that should matter is wins. Following that thought to its logical conclusion, none of it really matters because its just a game and I don't personally know any of the players. However, I am a fan and being a fan means that I enjoy speculation about the depth chart.

On Miller being big enough:

Yea ok maybe the numbers for height and weight look fine. But that doesn't account for strength or body composition. Hearing that Glasgow is stronger is evidence but not proof that Miller lacks the desired strength for the position. Then you take a look at him and he's not the leanest lineman that we have, in addition to being the lightest lineman vying for playing time. Its enough for me to have the theory that he hasn't locked down the starting job because he tends to get physically overpowered.

If he's reaching the limits of his genetic potential for strength and size, that means his upside is limited. Football teams are expected to improve as the season progresses. If Glasgow is even with Miller now but has better upside... no brainer, right?

I guess its a moot point, since the "insider" view is that Miller has already locked it down.

He'll probably be worked in to the offense more & more every week, similar to A-Train as a freshman. That was a similar situation, with a number of veteran backs (Howard, Williams, Floyd). Howard was more of an all purpose back, Williams was a reliable spell HB, Floyd was a FB and occasionally a short yardage hammer, and A-Train was a freshman talent that was too good to keep off the field. His workload snowballed over the weeks.

where I'm just gonna sit back and watch what happens. This whole offseason has been fun, and projecting the future is a good way to pass the time. Now I feel like I'm just going to watch the CTK vids and wait. No more trying to figure all this stuff out about rosters and reps. These coaches are gold, and I trust that they will put the best people on the field at all times. Go Blue!!! 11 days until the Big House!!! (p.s. if you missed my brat recipe you need to click on the  recent thread about tailgate food)

I believe there's a bit of a pattern in Hoke preseason depth charts (someone want to confirm). They tend t o heavily favor the older more veteran players in places with position battles. I get a sense he has the philosophy that 'the best players will play, but the young guys need to prove themselves first." Ultimately, i think this is more about Hoke leadership style than about Green's ability.

I listened to a podcast yesterday with Micheal Rothstein and what I deciphered from his long winded rambling was that Green just wasn't ready yet.

Take that for what it's worth I guess.....

If, and it is a big if, Green is overweight or making less than full effort (injuries aside) I hope he gets a motivational speech from Big Will Campbell on 5 star over hype.

Being redshirted does not equate to lack of prospect. A certain #77 Taylor Lewan redshirted and then did not start until several games into the next year. No one questions his ability now.
