Gareon Conley considering visits??? pt 2
I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, but...
per Tremendous:
Trieu and Bill Greene are reporting something along the lines of Gareon Conley is considering taking visits. Remember, if he takes a visit, his scholarship will be rescinded. The coaches have been ironclad in enforcing this rule and there's no reason to believe Conley would be an exception.
Tremendous I should make one thing clear; his scholarship would not be removed. He'd no longer be a commitment. I don't know why I said that.
The latest on #Michigan commit Gareon Conley and possible visits from @BillBankGreene : mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=162&…
This was already brought up on August 31st. LINK
But considering they are still talking about it 10 days later, it makes me believe he really is looking into taking visits. Lets hope this is not true, he is the CB I am the most excited about.

Two things. One, haven't we gone through this, "Recruit X just tweeted something", OH NOES!!! enough already?
And two, now that the season is here, I'm finding it a lot harder to be outraged/upset/even care about our future recruits. Let's worry about the product on the field right now

You're right. Big mistake on my part. I fixed it.

"(Commits) can visit other places, but they won't be playing for us."
Rescinding their scholarship offer is closer to the truth.

I think it is the coaches responsibility to dictate policy and expectations. Hoke wants kids who are committed to the University of Michigan. He tells them not to commit unless they are willing to be committed. After they commit he expects them to live by their word. That is the standard he has set, and if a player does not live by that standard then he can play elsewhere. I am fairly positive that if Shane Morris decided to take a visit to USC he would no longer have an opportunity to play at Michigan. If Hoke backtracked on that stance he would lose the respect of his team and his fans (me included). As far as Conley goes... I would really like to see the kid honor his commitment, but he really needs to make a decision...stop the chatter and stay, or open your recruitment back up and go elsewhere.
September 11th, 2012 at 2:27 AM ^
...which is probably a big part of the reason why Laquon Treadwell is holding off on making his commitment.
September 10th, 2012 at 10:38 PM ^
Eh, let me know when he steps foot on another campus. Many recruits have said they were going to take visits and decided not to after talking with the coaches. He's said he's been a UM fan for a long time, and UM is where he wants to play, so I hope he stays. If he really feels UM isn't the place for him, the so be it. But if he just wants to get wined and dined in some other college towns a couple of times, it would be a shame to give up your UM opportunity just for that.
September 10th, 2012 at 11:05 PM ^
Exactly! Didn't Terry Richardson say he was gonna take some visits and decided it might not be a good idea?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think his point was that sometimes kids say they're going to do something and ultimately don't. In that regard, it is analagous.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:57 AM ^
Pharaoh Brown didn't say he was going to visit Oregon, but did... so it's the opposite, but is still, perhaps, a good example of what HS recruits are apt to do in these situations - so it's a cautionary tale, not an analogy.
September 10th, 2012 at 11:52 PM ^
This means that savvy recruits will take visits to the schools that "provide the best recruiting experience" before they commit to Michigan.
While I don't like the fact that they are telling kids they can't go on trips, I can see the staff's point. From the standpoint of the school with the "committment," nothing good is going to happen when a "commit" visits another school.
Strange things can happen on a visit, especially in the SEC and at USC.

You mean illegal things.

I think we will be fine with or without him, but I was really looking forward to him and Stribling breaking the mold of smaller corners...
Ross Douglas, Richardson, Countess, Richardson, Avery, and Taylor all seem like great cover guys, but outside of flashes of Countess... I dont feel that confident in these guys providing great perimeter run support....(which KILLED us against both Bama and AF)
September 10th, 2012 at 10:37 PM ^
he will make the decsion best for him. i'm not worried rather have a kid that wants to be hear. if he feels "stuck" and that he made a bad choice he prolly will be transfering out anyway. if he goes and visits he is no longer commited.
September 10th, 2012 at 10:41 PM ^
Rumor has it that he's being pressured to take other visits by people close to him. Again, just a rumor, but it would explain why it keeps coming up, yet he still hasn't done it. He probably wants to stick with the Wolverines and knows what will happen if he takes visits. Hopefully he gets to make the decision he wants to make, and not be forced by someone else to do something he doesn't want to do.

Is this Scout trying to get more subs again with misleading headlines?
September 10th, 2012 at 11:03 PM ^
It kind of feels that way. The post from Bill Greene starts out by saying Bill went to Masillion to check on rumors and both Gareon and his head coach "emphasized he is still committed to Michigan..."
A few other items being reported in the post:
* Gareon is having a great year at WR and some schools are in his ear about playing WR.
* Cincinnati and Oregon are pushing for visits.
* His family is behind the push for him to visit other schools.

If it helps with anyone, it'd probably be McQuay.
September 10th, 2012 at 10:46 PM ^
Probably not, but it could get us back in with McQuay III. Don't know how much of a shot we'd have, but there is a possibility for a high level back-up plan.
September 10th, 2012 at 10:46 PM ^
He said previously that he committed too early, but I would still think that Mich is still very much in the lead for his services. He won't make or break us, but I think he would be a tremendous asset to our team should our coaching staff get to work with a 6'+ corner.

It would be a shame if the kid visited other schools, didn't get any more offers, and ended up at a MAC school. Michigan saw talent, offered, and he committed. He shouldn't be using that as leverage. It would be one thing if he had 20 major offers, but he doesn't.
September 10th, 2012 at 11:02 PM ^
You wouldn't marry a girl when you still wanted to court other girls. If he is seriously considering other schools, perhaps it is best we parted ways now, rather than drag out the process and possibly lose out other commits while he is unhappily committed here. Not to sound too harsh, but that is simply how I envision the issue.

about how people view college football and recruiting that they usually analogize it to marriage, which it isn't, rather than a business transaction, which it is.

I hate the way the whole system works right now. Players can't take "official" visits (i.e., on the school's dime,) until their senior year. But then there is severe pressure to commit BEFORE you can take an official, to lock in a spot. Otherwise, you risk losing the offer because you didn't commit fast enough. Something is wrong when guys from lower income families basically can't take any official visits, but have to take unofficials and come up with the money themselves. Then when you look at guys like Treadwell or Green, you see tremendous pressure to make a commitment today, now, and not AFTER comparing schools by taking 3 - 5 official visits.
Like I said, I hate the way it works now.
September 10th, 2012 at 11:53 PM ^
Nothing's going to stop the trend of recruits committing earlier and earlier, so the rule about no official visits until senior year needs to be changed
September 11th, 2012 at 12:02 AM ^
I agree. How would you deal with it? Let kids use their official visits during their junior seasons? That might be a good idea (well, it's probably a good idea), but it also could accelerate the process even further.
September 11th, 2012 at 4:36 AM ^
How about no restrictions on when they can take an official visit, but make a restriction on when they can commit?
September 11th, 2012 at 8:43 AM ^
They already have that its called National Signing Day. Verbals dont mean squat but people still put faith into them and thats what we base all of our team ranks off of until February.
September 11th, 2012 at 11:35 AM ^
I would put a cap on the amount of visits (probably try and go to six or seven) but move the date way back, maybe even the the day after the last day of sophomore year. I agree with Kass that it just isn't fair to lower income recruits to have to wait, while someone like THJ or Tate Forcier can take visits much earlier.
September 11th, 2012 at 12:15 AM ^
They are saying commit =commitment. Visits to other schools = not-commited. Make sure before you make the decision, a la Treadwell, Green, etc.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:07 AM ^
This is pretty simple - Hoke and his staff have established rules for recruits that are easy to understand.......make sure you are fully committed before you make a verbal announcement because if you take other visits we will stop recruiting you and offer your scholarship to someone else. No hard feelings but no debate about how things work.
