OT: Texas loses 19th player from team in last 15 months
Talk about attrition. DeSean Hales is the 19th player to leave volutarily or get kicked off the team in the last 15 months. This could be attributed to the coaching changes on the staff, but this is still a big number for an established program with the same HC who is facing no scandal or outside inquiry.

Texas will always be Texas. They have an abundance of talent that will have the 2nd stringers start at a lot of D1 schools.

Bruce Feldman talked about that in his mailbag today. http://www.cbssports.com/general/blog/bruce-feldman/19823015/mailbag-wh…
Basically pointed out that when Texas went all-in on 2009 recruit Garret Gilbert and he flamed out, it really hurt the program. And in 2008, they passed up local Texan Andrew Luck and only offered RG3 as an athlete. Had they got either of those two, they would have been drastically different the last few years.

Either one elevates that program. Instead they ended up with their own version of ThreetSheridanDammit last year.

Texas also whifffed on Darron Thomas of Aldine HS in the Houston area in 2008.

They don't stop being Texas just because they had a couple of down seasons. Did we stop being Michigan because of 2008-10? Let's ask Coach Hoke:

Between 1987 and 1997 (11 years and two coaches), Texas had five seasons where they finished .500 or worse and only two seasons where they finished with 10+ wins. They were largely irrelevant for over a decade.
Their run under Mack Brown was by far their best period in the team's history since Darrell Royal who last coached Texas in 1976.

Every program has had a dry spell at some time or another. Texas is #2 all-time in victories in college football, having recently passed Notre Dame. They have a good history.

Amassing talent doesn't always equal victories. Ask Notre Dame.

but it sure helps

As crazy as it is to say, Texas's talent is quite a bit better than ND's talent, at least IME.

why the kid would quit on his own, unless he was "nudged" in that direction.

Maybe he realized he only has a semester left in college and wanted to focus on getting his degree and finding a job. Dude was going to lose his meal ticket in a few months, and needed to move on to plan B. For a guy not likely to contribute that much, choosing school over 50 hours a week of football practice/weightlifting/film/etc isn't too much of a stretch. Its a smart decision if you ask me. Surprising more don't do it.

Sort of along the same lines, but Florida just lost its third 2013 4* within a week and second OL. One thing to get some decommitments, but three within a week?

Sounds like he saw the writing on the wall, and opted to focus on graduating. Good for him. Plus, he's still sticking around to mentor the young guys.

Texas was a bad to mediocre program for 3 decades up until several years ago.
What they have looked like the last 2 years is the Texas I saw growing up.

before sneaky Pete got there, they went a stretch of 22 years with only one 10-win season. Everyone has their down times.

5. killer bees
4. Mad Brown Disease
3. Upcoming meger between the LHN and the Hallmark Channel.
2. Burnt orange apparently a scent AND a color.
1. State-wide prostitute supply inexplicably drying up.

More people die from the West Nile virus in Texas than any other state.

the prostitute supply in Texas could inexplicably be drying up? What could possibly explain that? I don't know- I'm stumped.

says Craig James.

to let Craig James off the hooker, er, uhh,... I mean, off the hook too easily, but didn't Kwame Kilpatrick move to Texas, too, a couple years ago?
Just sayin'...

Even though some women of the night tend to disapear a little more frequently there....I can honestly say the supply is still there. Texas is fertile ground and would guess that they produce just as many prostitutes than football players.

There was an intriguing article earlier this year that talked about this over on HornsNation. I couldn't find the link, but as I recall, it talked about how there had been an attitude in Texas that, if a player received a scholarship, he was worthy of a spot on the team, but they've tried to change this to a "merit-based" system, if you will, and now ask that players prove that they can play essentially. They also said something to the effect that if an older player who was used to getting by basically wanted to go because now they had to prove themselves, then it doesn't really affect them quite so much.
At the time of this article, only two players of those who had left to date were essentially forced off the team - one for medical reasons, and one for criminal activity, I believe. Everyone else, Hales included, has simply left for one reason or another.

Funny how "fluid" schollies are at the football factories lately, especially programs and players who underachieve. Why over-recruit when you can just make your cuts a year or two ahead of time?

And any of those 19 players who were academically ineligbible at the time of their release will hurt the school's APR if im not mistaken. Ouch. Thats not good for school thats already has a rating of 937.
