OT - 10 Biggest Flops of All Time
The series of tubes that is the interwebs (contrary to popular belief, the internet is not a dump truck) is chock full of lists of the biggest product flops of all time. Here is just one of many entirely subjective lists (http://www.investorplace.com/2012/06/10-biggest-product-flops-of-all-time/ )
- New Coke
- McDonald’s Arch Deluxe
- Maxwell House Ready-to-Drink Coffee
- Ben-Gay Aspirin
- Harley-Davidson Perfume
- Bic Underwear
- Crystal Pepsi
- Colgate Kitchen Entrees
- Coors Rocky Mountain Spring Water:
- Cocaine Energy Drink
So to relate this to MGoBlog, if Mr. Vociferous's latest post were a product, where would it fall into this list? Are there any other MGoMoments that would be as universally panned as this one?
I'd give him the number 1 spot. Seems like an absolutely unnessary post about a topic we have had enough of. I almost want to call him out as a troll because nothing good comes from posting that topic again. Seems like someone wanting to smear the Michigan name would post that.
McMandarich
was pretty well panned. If we go further back, there was KingOfBelch and his trolling/meltdowns. THE KNOWLEDGE (not THE_KNOWLEDGE)'s failings were also well documented. As was McFarlin.
One post does not a huge flop make... but collective trolling/posbanging/referencing your other account in your ghost posts (WolverineInABag) that's a flop.
So is this:
LeBron's flop (I believe it was this series?) where he actually fell the wrong way was pretty damn bad.
At work, so not gonna embed, but on Youtube there's a Greg Paulus flop that's worse than either, IMO....it's so floppy it's like a guy driving an Edsel to McDonald's to order an Arch Deluxe with a New Coke and then heading to the movies to watch John Carter.
I mean, I dunno how bad this is, it didn't even draw a whistle. Bosch drew a foul on Boozer in the clip above.
Yup, that's the one. And the fact that it failed to draw a whistle is proof of the giant epic floppitude of it. The guy was behind Paulus FFS. Usually you're supposed to flop away from the guy. Paulus flopped on him.
I loved me some Crystal Pepsi.
For some reason I was thinking this would be about draft flops or recruiting flops. One of the biggest product flops would also have to be Hair in a can. I've atleast heard of that one
You mean to tell me that people can tell I spray painted my scalp black this morning!?
There were some epic flameouts during the RR/Hoke transition period. Also, and this may not be here, but there was a post with the ND student's death that was about as tone-death as you can imagine.
That said, this is still the worst flop ever:
Those were beyond terrible. Jim Harbaugh wears his headset like a Michigan Man! Dick Rod sux lol!
The worst ND post I can remember from here was [redacted on second thought] posting a thread that basically explained in an excited tone that the girl who committed suicide last year was allegedly "sexually assaulted" by a ND football player instead of raped. It was about the most ridiculously heartless thing I've read on a sports site.
I faintly remember that as well. I swear there was a post about how ND's "cover-up"/failures with the tragic death of the student trainer was analogous to the Catholic Church's issues with sexual assault of children by priests. It didn't last long, and again might not have been here, but that was about as bad a post as I ever saw.
Luckily, the fact that I can't remember numerous examples is probably a good thing - go to RCMB and every other post is about politics or debating the merits of having sexual intercourse with large women.
Pro wrestling is disqualified from Biggest Flop contests for the same reason the varsity football team isn't allowed to play IM football.
I would normally agree, except that this was a horrible flop even by professional wrestling standards. A more appropriate flop would be the Eddie Guerrero memorial "throw the chair at the other guy and fall down so that the ref disqualifies him for hiting you".
Im calling B.S. on Crystal Pepsi being on this list. That shit was nice!
Crystal Pepsi and Van Halen will forever be linked.
I imagine this stuff could make a solid argument for being on such a list too:
As for threads, there was one about an interview that Charles Woodson gave to a certain paper which I believe hit close to 90 downvotes a copule months ago (much of it had to do with who started it and what they tried to infer from Woodson's words), so among recent ones, that might rank up there.
How is Cocaine Energy Drink a flop??
That ain't no cute black bear looking for sugar. That's a brown bear looking for meat and he's high!
That stuff is like bath salts to those bears.
Why is it my favorite fast food burgers have to end up flopping. I absolutely loved the Arch deluxe and pretty much cried (yes, I am/was a fat kid) when they discontinued it. There was only one other McDonalds product I loved more, which was also a flop (or atleast a limited time special release):

Technically speaking the cheddar melt isn't a flop. It's one of those temporary things they can bring back at any time like the McRib, but they never do! #Sobs
What?!?! I've never heard of this, but it sounds absolutely amazing!
... on a bun.
Is... is that a... a whole wheat bun???
Even better, RYE.
After they dropped it I started getting chicken chalupas, gorditas, and quesadillas at Taco Bell and never looked back.
C'mon man. That's No. 2 and 3 right there.
New Coke was awesome. Pepsi Throwback is the best. Real sugar makes a world of taste difference.
Add: MSUs monster collapse vs ND at home, cue Valenti rant.
Add: NDs monster collapse vs UM at the Big house, cue my tears
Add: Googles handling of pre-orders for the Nexus 7.
I don't like Pepsi so if I want real sugar I go with the Mexi Coke.
Well, this was by far my most embarassing moment in my time here. I still think they look alike, especially if you look at the video that BeanTownBlue posted halfway down the thread. But yeah, I probably couldn't have found two pictures of the guys that looked any different. Especially looking at it now, they don't look anything alike in those pics.
Millen
I always thought that New Coke was introduced around the same time "classic" Coke switched from real sugar to corn syrup, so it was used as a way to make the change in ingredients without people noticing. They introduced New Coke until all the real sugar Coke was gone from teh shelves. Once it was gone they claimed there was a big rallying cry for the original Coke so the "brought it back" only this time using corn syrup.
Does anyone know for certain. It seems that if that was the case, then New Coke was never really a flop as much as it was a marketing trick.
Yeah, that's a semi-popular conspiracy theory about New Coke, but it's not true. I mean, one, they didn't "claim" there was a big rallying cry......there was one. And that kind of thing just isn't predictable, for one, and for two, Coke was already being sweetened with corn syrup instead of sugar by the time the switch was made, and people didn't seem to notice.
Apple Newton, Ron Powlus, anything from Microsoft in the last 10 years.
That stuff did taste weird, though. Sort of a combo of cinnamon and ginger ale.
