Thanks to Shawn Hunwick
Just wanted to give a separate thread thanks to Shawn Hunwick. One of the best goaltenders to suit up for us. It's a shame your career had to end that way.
You're the only reason we made the tournament 2 years ago, made the national title game last year and the only reason we were a 1 seed this year

Rudy ain't shit.
Hail Hail to Hunwick.

Wish he'd make the Hobey Hat Trick, but there's just no way it happens after tonight. It's a bummer. What a kid.

Gonna miss him, hard.

He will live on as a Michigan legend.
I will remember the feeling of dread when Hogie went down for the first time and Shawn stepped into goal as a full time replacement. Then Shawn blew everyone way. He has exceeded every expectation. We could have never made the playoffs in 2010 with Shawn's heat and amazing goaltending.
If I get a dog I want to name it Hunwick.
Go blue!

All of the seniors. Pateryn played his ass off tonight, as did Glendenning.

And don't forget Wohlberg!

Also, he's no longer a student-athlete. We need a "Tiny Jesus" shirt in the MGoStore.

Who plays goalie next year?
March 24th, 2012 at 12:23 AM ^
I think we'll all appreciate Hunwick on another next year when our goaltender isn't always rock in net
First as mentioned below is NTDP goalie Jared Rutledge, who is presumed to be the starter.
Also coming in is 21 year old OJHL goalie Steven Racine, who has put up solid numbers but is a big question mark. He has played for a large number of teams and has been traded by almost all of them.
According to the Georgetown Raiders website he went 15-0 in the regular season last year, so he is someone to keep an eye on.

Jared Rutledge will probably come in and be the goalie out of the USA NDT unless Janny can step up. Outlook isn't looking good. Trouba should be fun to watch with Nieves though.

Shawn Hunwick skated over to the Cornell bench and handed them the game-winning puck.
Class act.
that is absolutely unbelievable. Didn't think it was possible that I coulda loved that kid more, but I do. Class act, indeed.

Tiny Jesus died for our sins.

Getting my 2008-09 - 2010-11 Maize jersey customized to be a Hunwick jersey and am gonna put it in a display case.
This was a disappointment in the area of championships, but not in effort. This team was looking to becoming the first in over 20 years to not make the NCAA Tournament. They made it. They were in the conference race until the last week of the season, came up short in a hard fought conference playoff championship game. They won the GLI, which is a stepping stone to bigger and better things usually.
Michigan will be back next season. And they will be good. Michigan will win the final CCHA Playoffs next year and be in the running for the final CCHA Championship. Once the goaltender situation is figured out, the team will be good. So much talent coming back.
Can't wait. Gonna miss the seniors, especially Hunwick. What a story, what a great kid.
Go Blue!

I'll never root for another athlete the way I rooted for Hunnie. Mike Hart, Zack Novak status - and then some - in my eyes.
So long, kid. You're a beauty.

Amen. That's my all-time favorite Michigan athlete right there. Came to Michigan expecting never to play (although he likely would've played a ton for Albion, his original destination) just because he loved the school and wanted to be a part of things here, stepped into the breach time and again to preserve one of the greatest streaks in all of college sports, never talked up his own skill but put all the focus on his teammates, and put us in a position over and over again to win championships and compete at the highest level. Can't ask for more out of a Michigan man than that.
He would have been at Adrian College. Albion does not have varsity hockey.

neither of Cornell's last goals were on him. He was hung out to dry on both
It won't haunt him at all. It wasn't on him.
Maybe if we could have haunted Cornell with a goal on 20 minutes worth of Power Plays, he'd still be playing.

Came here to post a thread just like this one; glad (and, of course, compeltely unsurprised) to find it already here. This is the text I was going to use:
So passes one of the greatest goalies in Michigan history, one of the best storylines in NCAA history across all sports, and my favorite Michigan athlete of my entire life. Gotta set aside the anger for a minute to remember a great Michigan career. All the best to Shawn Hunwick in the rest of his life.

I know many teams will over look his size, I just hope he gets a shot atleast the AHL like Lerg did, just so he can prove himself. Thanks to all the seniors. The team will be scary good next year if the goaltenders just play good they will definitley be contenders.
Ugh, I was really hoping for a better ending than the one he (and the team) got. Unheralded and an unknown coming in, he was clutch time and again for the Maize & Blue. He's easily one of my all-time players to ever play here, and I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.
There is no justice in the world seeing that we didn't win a NC for him. He was the rock of our team and we will always remember him. I hope his jersey is retired as he has done alot for this program. He's up there with Vic, Red, and Morrison in legendary status in my mind.
As corny as it sounds, people like Shawn are the MIchigan Difference. Puting everything out there for a team, busting your ass off, realizing a dream....man it's really dusty in here
when you step back and look at what he did, in total, a career doesn't get much more remarkable.
Only one thing eluded him, and on a night like tonight, I'm feeling particularly bitter about 2010. I just don't think that team was going to be denied, and, obviously, they really weren't. That screw job stings even worse now that it's all over. That team was on fire - I really wonder if they could have won it all.

If you haven't read it, do so. If you have, read it again.
Thank you, Shawn.

I love that man. And going to miss him terribly. I feel like anything we write, won't accurately do him justice.
Goals disallowed in three straight Tournaments. NOT FAIR, hockey gods. NOT FAIR.
Shaaaaawn Hun-wick! *clap clap clapclapclap*

How easy to like, follow, and cheer for. Lots of the guys are easy to like, but to come from where he came from and to have done what he did, he is one of a kind. Special.
