Recruiting: Remaining Need, Interest in Michigan, Best Available?
So, I just can't get my mind around having 12 recruits already committed. This is completely unreal, and hard to fathom. That means we only have room for 10 or 11 more recruits in the 2013 class. Almost a year away til signing day. Unbelievable. Tremendous.
Having looked at Ace's "Hello" posts, and the interest from potential recruits still out there, I'm trying to think through how they match up. Magnus & Aquaman already put together a list of who they'd most like to see come to Michigan. There's no point in replicating the work they've already done. However, a corollary list would be remaining needs, and reasonable likelihood of coming to Michigan. Here's a list to start. I'd like to know three things:
- What needs are missing below?
- Who on the list below is unlikely to come to Michigan?
- Who has an offer in an area where we no longer have need. (for example, are we all set at TE, or would we still make room, say, for Breneman?)
Obviously, being a Michigan homer, I want just 5 star and four star recruits. But I also want a sense of who "realistically" might come to Michigan, and who would best fit the needs at Michigan.

He's too legit to quit. Even though I hear we have little to no chance of getting him, I would love to see him in this class.

1 more TE
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:18 PM ^
I'd put Kendall Fuller at CB. I'm just saying if he comes to our spring game he obviously has some interest.

This year the coaches really got a jump on recruiting and now it allows them to evaluate the rest of this class and the 2014 class more closely to reel in even better players. This staff is absolutely outstanding.

I believe you meant tremendous.

i'm giving you a +1 in my head right now

I'm guessing we'll take around 22 since we didn't take 28 last year so we are a little more than halfway done.

I would love to see us snag Devon Allen, the receiver from AZ. He's got the agility and hands that could make him an excellent fit for the slot. More obvious guys at the top of my list are Levenberry and Hargreaves. I don't know what chances we have with Hargreaves, but that kid's talented as hell.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:46 PM ^
There are several offers out there which just seem very unlikely to happen. The purpose of my OP was to both identify areas of remaining need, and also identify prospects who have put us out there as their leader, or in their top three, or top five. Yeah, any team in the country would gladly take all their recruits from the top 50 list. But that isn't realistic (unless, maybe, you're Urban Meyer.) So, I will gladly edit my OP, but only if someone has given a clear indication that they are very interested in Michigan.
LTT is a good example of this. So is Shane Morris, and Dukes, and Lewis, and Taco. These are all guys who showed clear and repeated interest in Michigan.

Vernon Hargreaves's dad is the DL coach at South Florida. Not really sure, but if I had to guess, South Florida might be a real factor in his recruitment.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:26 PM ^
Which safety, TE, and DT we have the best chance with? i know we have great prospects left at linebacker, Wide Reciever and Running Back but i haven't seen a lot of strong interest from those other positions with the recruits left on the board.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:44 PM ^
We already have two TEs committed, I doubt we take another one.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:29 PM ^
How much interest has Eddie Vanderdoes shown in UM? Is he just considering us from a large group of schools, or do we have a really good shot with the kid?

WR: L. TREADWELL
WR: J. QUICK, B.EDWARDS(i know he doesn't hold an offer and he is a rb, but I think he would fit the slot role nicely.imo)
LB: LEVENBERRY
LB: O'DANIEL, McCRAY
DT: CRAYTON, POGGI
DT: LATHAM, VANDERDOES
OL: McGOVERN, POCIC, DILLARD(center prospect but no offer...yet)
RB: D. GREEN, D.SMITH, TY ISAAC
CB: FULLER, CONLEY, HARGREAVES(not likely but would be sweet)
SS: CRAVENS
TE: there are many possibilities here and i think if we dont take a second safety or linebacker then we will take a third tight end
DE: HATCHER- again only if we lose out on another position and it has been said he is leaning toward louisville

Sounds like Quick won't be coming here and I would be beyond surprised if Fuller doesn't go to VT. Other than that, I pretty much agree!
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:34 PM ^
Not aqua but for DT i believe we are in strong position with Rod Crayton, Darius Latham and Henry Poggi while players like Eddie Vanderdoes or Greg Webb have shown some intrest
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:43 PM ^
Has there been any news on Ben Gedeon lately? I know he received an Ohio offer last month. It seems like both sides have cooled unless I missed something to the contrary.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:44 PM ^
We should be taking one kid for every position on offense and defense every year. So, yes, we should get a second safety. We will take a second back, so you either need to add a second running back or a full back. Based on what we have, what you've listed as needs, and what I just added, that's 24, which is probably realistic. We had more than 28 available scholarships and we only took 25 (26 if Kozan decides to come to Michigan). That's 3-5 available scholarships, plus 16 graduating seniors, plus attrition, meaning you probably have somewhere in the range of 24 scholarships available to your next recruiting class.

Last summer I had worked at the team camp for my college (small school, Iowa). As coaches we were assigned teams to work with and I lucked in to working with Amara Darboh's Dowling Catholic squad. Even better, they divided up into offense and defense and I got to take the offense, so I had to opportunity to watch Darboh work in a team setting for six practices that lasted three hours apiece. I'm no scout but if the interest is there I could throw together my impressions of him from that time.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:55 PM ^
but no one minds some first hand experience with the recruits. What do you got?

I'd like to see us take AT LEAST two DT. Hopefully big will and peewee can dominate the middle this year, but will is leaving after this year and there seems to be a big drop off in talent. (well unless one of the listed DEs converts)
February 23rd, 2012 at 5:35 PM ^
Kenton Gibbs is a DT at Cass Tech who the coaches might offer if they miss out on their top priorities. Marcel Ateman and Eldridge Massington are wide receivers who have shown interest. Jacob Matuska is a good bet if the coaches are taking another TE. Shane Cockerille is a teammate of Poggi who the coaches have offered. He plays QB and DB. Evan Lisle and Patrick Kugler are two OL who have shown interest that I don't think anyone has mentioned.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:00 PM ^
I'd add Kevin Gladney (WR), Cameron Walker (CB), Jayln Powell (S), and Kenton Gibbs (DT- I'm guessing he'll get an offer in December/January)
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:17 PM ^
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:39 PM ^
Lequon Treadwell WR
Kevin Gladney WR ( If Neither come here these guys could if offered Berkley Edwards, Brandon Bean)
EJ Levenberry LB
Darion O'Daniel LB
Ben Gedeon (Mike McCray if either other LBs dont commit)
Herny Poggi DT
Ethan Pocic OL
TY Isaac RB
De'veon Smith RB
Gareon Conley CB
Jacob Matuska TE
Tre Bell CB
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:48 PM ^
I highly doubt we take three running backs or three tight ends, let alone both.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:43 PM ^
Love your list, and just have a few questions.
-
Mike McCray - do you see him behind Levenberry, O'Daniel, and Gedeon?
-
Eddie Vanderdoes - you see him going elsewhere?
-
Gedeon, Smith, Conley, Matuska, Bell - have you seen an indication that they are high on Michigan, and likely to come here?
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:55 PM ^
and I believe that Levenberry, and O'Daniel will probadly commit at or around the spring game Gedeon and McCray these two will wait it out for a while but I think Gedeon will pull the trigger first, Eddie Vaderdoes is someone I have to see how interested he is I might add him to the list when he visit but right now I'm playing location card. Smith I believe he likes Michigan plus I think he is that second RB were as Shallman is a hybrid runningback/fullback think BJ Askew type, Matuska I believe he is a True TE that can play on the line for run blocking and can go out to catch the ball too I think Jake Butt and Devin Funchess will be used like Aaron Hernandez and Tony Scheffler,Bell I think he is a cover corner that Michigan can use he reminds me of Blake Countess and I think Michigan would like to add more depth at corner plus I think he could play early. Were as Richardson, and Lewis will be redshirted so they can add more weight to their frame develop their skills.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:58 PM ^
When we first offered Latham, was it at OT or DT? I see he's a top-ten OT on 247 and a DT on the other sites. Rivals has him as a four-star DT outside of the top-250.

Sorry if this doesn't belong in this thread, but Illinois has publically admitted they are going after UM commits. I had 2 reactions:
1. LMAO
2. Slimey. Esp to bring it to media. I actually wonder if this isn't a NCAA violation, as you can't talk about specific recruits untill LOI is in hand.

Asked #illini Tim Beckman about 2 in-state recruits going to Michigan. He said "Well, thank goodness Signing Day isn't until next February."
I see nothing wrong in what was said.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:26 PM ^
Maybe not "polite" but Bosch & LTT just gave verbal commitments which stands for absolutely nothing in the court of law
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:37 PM ^
We're still going after Elmer who committed to ND. We went after Reeves after PSU blew up. Until a LOI is signed, nothing is in stone.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:45 PM ^
Not so fast my friend....he will do his normal routine of going after them once thy have commited.
