MGo Poll (Continued)
EDIT 1: I would like to increase my sample size from the earlier poll. Please take the time to answer. If you have already answered this, thank you.
EDIT 2: That is 20/33 thus far for 60%. as of 06MAY12.
Now that the Sugar Bowl is history and we won, I wanted to ask my MGo Friends a simple question. It is more of an informal poll really.
How many know the "whole" words to "The Victors"?
I had the opportunity to spend some quality time with my nieces (Jaycee 6 and Eleana 4). They have an aunt who went to sparty. I was amaized they knew the sparty fight song, every word.
The girls then asked me to teach them "The (whole) Victors, not just the "hail" part". So I had to perform my family duties to save these young, impressionable minds. I sat down and put in my favorite CD "Fire Up, its Saturday" and taught them the "whole" Victors, along with "Varsity" and "The Yellow and Blue".
I enjoy singing the fight song of my new Alma Mater at every worship on fall Saturdays. I could not help but be a little disappointed because, at the Sugar Bowl, I did not hear anyone singing during the pre-game. I know I am a little biased but we have the best pre-game in the country. So my question is, how many people know the entire words to The Victors?
I am trying to get a little information. My initial estimation is that about 70% of my MGoFriends know the words. Here is a link to "Operation Hail" done by some LSA students at ohio during an under-cover mission. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oEstbblEyU

I do. My kids & I sing it at bed time. My son usually chooses it as hit bedtime song. they know most of it.
January 5th, 2012 at 9:40 PM ^
I would very much hope that around 99.999999% would know the words to the victors.
January 6th, 2012 at 7:08 PM ^
Only 1 other person in Sec 6 sings along with me.
January 5th, 2012 at 11:07 PM ^
the chorus. He's talking about the entire song.
I am an alum... and I do not know the complete song. Nor do many of the alums that I associate with. I'm thinking less than 50% of blog members would know the entire song.

Every word

My guess is that a most of us know "Hail to the victors valiant..." through "...champions of the West!" but we're a little more hazy when it comes to "In stalwart step they're nighing...". I will admit to falling into that category.
January 5th, 2012 at 9:46 PM ^
That puts us at 3/4 (75%).
January 5th, 2012 at 9:58 PM ^
Lyrics
- Now for a cheer they are here, triumphant!
- Here they come with banners flying,
- In stalwart step they're nighing,
- With shouts of vict'ry crying,
- We hurrah, hurrah, we greet you now, Hail!
- Far we their praises sing
- For the glory and fame they've bro't us
- Loud let the bells them ring
- For here they come with banners flying
- Far we their praises tell
- For the glory and fame they've bro't us
- Loud let the bells them ring
- For here they come with banners flying
- Here they come, Hurrah!
(chorus)
- Hail! to the victors valiant
- Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
- Hail! Hail! to Michigan
- The leaders and best!
- Hail! to the victors valiant
- Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
- Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
- The champions of the West!
(break strain)
- We cheer them again
- We cheer and cheer again
- For Michigan, we cheer for Michigan
- We cheer with might and main
- We cheer, cheer, cheer
- With might and main we cheer!
(chorus)

Note that in the version generally played by the MMB at football games, the second verse is abridged. This part
Far we their praises sing
For the glory and fame they've bro't us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
...is omitted, apparently for time constraints.
January 5th, 2012 at 9:49 PM ^
I know it. I don't sing it, but I know it.
January 5th, 2012 at 9:49 PM ^
I definitely only know the Hail part, which I am ashamed to admit. Although I do know at least how the tune goes for the rest of the fight song, thanks to my MMB cds.
January 5th, 2012 at 9:51 PM ^
Everyone around me sings The Vicotrs in Section 18. It is an alumni section though which probably ups the percentages quite a bit.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:33 PM ^
Wait, do you mean the chorus or the full verses, too? Tons of fans sing the chorus, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone (other than Glee Club members) sing the first two verses.
January 7th, 2012 at 1:11 AM ^
of my research. The MMB plays the verses one time through then the chorse, strain, then chorus. II did not hear anyone at the Sugar Bowl sing the versus or strain. I was suprised because I thought most bowl goers were alumni and rabid fans who should know the "whole" song.
I also proposed by hypothesis that Mgousers would be considered "rabid" and I proposed 75% know and sing the best song in the world. There is some time left for the weekender Mgosuers to respond.
January 5th, 2012 at 9:54 PM ^
....and they sing it randomly once in a while. My duaghter requests the CD I have on occasion, and my son sang himself to sleep with it a few times. They'll be coming to a school near you hopefully in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
January 5th, 2012 at 10:01 PM ^
As an alum I'm ashamed that I do not know any lyrics [ed: other than] between the "hail to the victors" and "champions of the west". I do pledge to study up now for next season though. You'll hear me singing, don't worry.
January 6th, 2012 at 11:35 AM ^
Same thing here. It always did bother me to miss the first hail, though, so I did learn the music so that I know when the first one is coming.
January 5th, 2012 at 9:56 PM ^
I know every word. I choose not to sing it every time its played though. My singing sucks.
January 5th, 2012 at 10:01 PM ^
God has ordained "The Victors" as a choir hymnal so it is almost impossible to sing it poorly. The angels will appear from heaven and guide you, my friend. Sing, let them sing.
January 5th, 2012 at 10:00 PM ^
I think this is a very confusing thread..I absolutely know from "Hail to the Victors", to "the Champions of the West." In fact I've taught myself to even play it on piano and bass..but I definitely do not know the rest as I have never heard it played other than myself searching for it. I would be shocked if 70% knew the entire song's words, but would be as shocked if at least 70% knew the popular part's words.
January 5th, 2012 at 10:03 PM ^
much higher than 75% of those fan who know only the chorus. I am hoping that most people on this board would be more fanatical than your average casual fan though.
January 5th, 2012 at 10:07 PM ^
yeah, i would think at least 90% of mgobloggers have that down. I would bet that mostly Michigan alumni would know the other portion of the song and that it would be a little less than half know that part completely...that may be wildly off though, which is what polls are for.
January 5th, 2012 at 11:16 PM ^
don't work well. People that have the more favorable/impressive response are more likely to participate.
Pick 10 random posters and ask them if they know all the words; I'd be surprised if 4 said yes.
January 6th, 2012 at 12:31 AM ^
agree from my stats class that a true scientific poll MUST have a random number generator to pick the sample participants. I also agree that most people, in general, will not respond negatively but most people who do know the verses will respond. This will skew the results.
I might, just might, formulate a true scientific poll and send them out to Mgobloggers, students and alums. The advantage of having an M email account is that we have access to everyone's email account whether its a student, professor, administrator or employee of the UM.
I wrote DB an email expressing my displeasure with striped unis, piped in music and the terrible idea of a mascot. He did not respond. I was polite because I dont want to get kicked out of school or lose my athletic privileges.
January 5th, 2012 at 10:05 PM ^
I know them. Heck - if you'd asked on Monday I could've delivered a very off-key but never-the-less enthusiasic concert to prove it.
True story - In 1997 my fellow alumni (Dental School - class of 1966 or something - he's even older than me) brother and I went out to the Rose Bowl and had the misfortune of staying at the Irvine Embassy Suites where the Washington State booster club was staying. We got there on December 30th and immediately went to the complementary happy hour the Embassy Suites put on to get in the right frame of mind. Suddenly we realized that we were surrounded by nothing by WSU fans and at some point their leader stood up and gave a few announcements then asked everyone to join him in singing whatever their fight song is called.
He then pulled out a 3x5 card and started to sing the song from the card. At which point I jumped up and started yelling "put the card down. If you're such a great big fan of WSU sing the song from the heart". The room got real quiet real fast and said back to me "Oh yeah...like YOU guys from Michigan know the words to your fight song". At which point I jumped up, grabbed my brother by the back of the shirt and yanked him to his feet and we sang the loudest version of the Victors we knew how to sing. And yes...with ALL the correct words in all their correct places.
Afterwards they WSU fans applauded and their leader walked over and said "you win". I told him never make that challenge to a real Michigan fan again. I think we learn it at birth.

How are you? Did you make it back to Cleveland ok?
Agreed. It should be tested as a part of our DNA. I wonder if any Mgo Med School students can answer this, "What marker is the Michigan Man marker?"

Momma caught a cold bug from somewhere. The pressure differential really played hell with her inner ear. She could barely walk from the gate to the tram at Metro. She sends her best to you and Mrs. Mgrowold.

Love it its great that your kids are teaching others the words. My 3 year old is starting to associate all things Maize and Blue with Michigan. I painted a block M the other day and asked him what it was and he replied "Michigan" Dad was proud.

I know main part that everyone knows, but get completely lost on the verses
January 5th, 2012 at 10:58 PM ^
Sadly I must join the Hail only part as I get the rest mixed up.
January 5th, 2012 at 11:10 PM ^
Who remain after hockey games, basketball games and those who do it at football games, and who sing "The Yellow and Blue." Your parents who were at Michigan in the 60's and 70's didn't do it.
Props, to today's students who do.
If somebody wants a good t-shirt idea, just print the complete lyrics to The Victors, or The Yellow and Blue, upside down on the front of a shirt in readable type. So anybody with the shirt can sing along.
January 6th, 2012 at 12:33 AM ^
can I mark you down for a "yes"?
January 6th, 2012 at 1:55 AM ^
I could not sing the entire all-verse "Victors." The chorus, of course. The Yellow and Blue, yes. Varsity, I think so. I could even sing Carmen Ohio, which happens to be a nice lyric over a great old Methodist hymn. (And being able to sing Carmen Ohio puts me one up as an Ohio Man on Terelle Pryor, who admitted to Jon Gruden that he didn't know the words.)

You've inspired me, however, to be ready next fall with the all-lyrics Victors.

for your reply. I will make a promise to my nieces, I will take them to a game if they promise to sing The Victors verse and chorus.
January 5th, 2012 at 11:27 PM ^
I would be surprised if more than 5% of the Mgobloggers knew the entire song.
January 5th, 2012 at 11:36 PM ^
I know the entire thing, start to finish. And I sing it every Saturday. Alone. In the shower. Naked. Haterzz.
But I'm ashamed to admit I do not know all the words to The Yellow and Blue. On my to-do list.

Song Lyrics to "Yellow and Blue"
Sing to the colors that float in the light;
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!
Yellow the stars as they ride through the night
And the reel in a rollicking crew;
Yellow the fields where ripens the grain
And yellow the moon on the harvest wain;
Hail!
Hail to the colors that float in the light
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!
Blue are the billows that bow to the sun
When yellow robed morning is due.
Blue are the curtains that evening has spun
The slumbers of Phoebus to woo;
Blue are the blossoms to memory dear
And blue is the sapphire and gleams like a tear;
Hail!
Hail to the ribbons that nature has spun'
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!
Here's to the college whose colors we wear,
Here's to the hearts that are true!
Here's to the maid of the golden hair,
And eyes that are brimming with blue!
Garlands of bluebells and maize intertwine,
And hearts that are true and voices combine;
-Hail!
Hail to the college whose colors we wear;
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

I know it, but I'm an ex bando. From my days in the MMB most of us learned the words to Varsity, The Victors, I Want To Go Back To Michigan, and The Yellow & Blue. I always get surprised looks when singing all the words during pre-game.
January 5th, 2012 at 11:46 PM ^
Alumni...And I've never even seen the whole thing written out like that. I'm going to go sit in the corner facing the wall now.
January 5th, 2012 at 11:53 PM ^
i didn't even know there were other parts to it besides the "chorus". this makes me feel bad about myself.
