I mean, Alabama's defense is number one in everything, so there's that.

....With a team full of 1st round draft picks.

<br>Mattison does way more from a talent to production ratio.

But he won it in 2009 and has ridiculous athletes playing for him. To me that means there was a lot less coaching involved because the defense was already established. No defense owes its success this year to the coaching more than ours. It shouldn't be an award for the best team, it should be for the best coach. I feel the same way about the head coach of the year award. It bothers me that there's so many perennial BCS team coaches in the running every year. I think a turnaround says a lot more about a coach than maintaining that level when you have pro players on your team.

You guys are so right. Greg Mattison deserves it for sure. This has been one hell of a turnaround. And he's done it with mostly the same kids that finished 108th in scoring defense last year. I was just kind of amazed to see Alabama number one in every single category.
Is Brady Hoke going to win coach of the year? If we beat Ohio and then Houston in the Sugar Bowl, I'd be surprised if he didn't.

Maintaining a strong defense with a bench full of 4 & 5*s where you've been coach for a while is completely different than taking a bunch of sophomores who had previously been last in defense the previous year to a serious defense ... in the first year.
Saban is fine, but his performance compared to the previous year's benchmark isn't even as close to astonishing as what has happened at Michigan this year.

This is not a poll for Defense of the year, it's a poll for Defensive coach of the year.
What Mattison has done is just astonishing - taken Michigan from worse than 100th in scoring defense to 6th. With the same players. It's not like a bunch of new 5*' recruits showed up in February.
Those other guys had already-good defenses that they kept good. The Michigan defense was bad. Mattison came in. The Michigan defense became good. Mattison was the difference maker.

Hopefully they take Narduzzi's comments on "60 minutes of unnecessary roughness" into consideration when deciding the recipient of the award.

I shouldn't have to vote for something so obvious.
This is like me saying..."hey guys, vote if you want to see Erin Andrews/Paula Patton/Jessica Alba naked"
Some things in this world just don't need opinion. Greg Mattison for coordinator of the year is one of those things...(along with me seeing Paula Patton's boobies).
